Re: Different gm steering wheel that fits?

the new wheels do fit, but the actual column is different. i just tried all of this on saturday.

you just have to unbolt the wheel and put the new (99+) wheel on and voila!

Re: Different gm steering wheel that fits?

It does, but the steering wheel bolts up and works perfectly. The airbag connectors were different, so I cut and spliced the wires and nothing bad happened.

My 98 had the steering wheel with the big ugly horn button so i found a leather wrapped one off an 03 extreme with the smaller horn button

Re: Different gm steering wheel that fits?

Yeah thats what I thought, great pics. I knew they were different but I've never seen them side by side..

You can see the 1st one is starting to wear down a with that cheap foam stuff on it.

Looks like I need a wheel as well as an airbag

Re: Different gm steering wheel that fits?

Yeah man the leather is nice. Doesn't make a bunch of squeaking noise when you turn the wheel lol

This swap really should be a how-to, because the newer wheels will swap into the earlier years too I believe.

Re: Different gm steering wheel that fits?

I had the 94-97 style wheel too and decided to ditch it for a nice wood wheel. I would look into the new grant wheels with airbags. They make em for all of the new full size chevys idk if they have one for the s10s yet. Any chance an hhr wheel would fit?

Re: Different gm steering wheel that fits?

Finally got a day off work, so I'll try the Colorado wheel today. And I would NEVER EVER splice airbag wiring. Just the thought that a little corrosion on the splice or it grounding out, or even the wrong voltage could put a 200MPH balloon in my face seems bad.

Re: Different gm steering wheel that fits?

If you have a 98-02 S10, the Yukon/Escalade wheel for the same year will work.

The airbag is the same

When servicing Airbag Component Wiring, GM actually specifies crimp connections with heat shrink tubing as the proper method of repairing airbag pigtails... You could always just buy the ~$2.00 connectors online and just remove the wire pins and insert them into the new connector IF there are the same amount of wires, and the only difference is the connector.

Re: Different gm steering wheel that fits?

I know NOTHING about it... but I would always have that thought in the back of my head saying "the connector was different cause this bag needs XX signal/voltage, and the other was more/less".

While you're at it, might as well look for a wheel with stereo controls though.

I have a '94... no airbag, so I can put whatever I want on there

Check on the bay. I've seen charcoal grey ones with the wood trim at the top on a regular basis.

I picked one up with stereo controls that's going into my 2000 Blazer project.

This style wheel will work on 99-05 S10's. (the airbag has two steel pins) It will also fit a 98 S10, if it has option package ZN4.

98's without ZN4 use an airbag with 4 steel pins.

Re: Different gm steering wheel that fits?

I wantd a Cadillac wheel for mine, however the price of the wheel alone is enough, I didn'twant to kno what the airbag was going to cost me. I might s well just go with an aftermarket wheel.

This is interesting as we can look into the escalade/yukon aftermarket now as well, I have wanted a nice aftermarket airbag steering wheel

Re: Different gm steering wheel that fits?

There are quite a few choices for this style steering wheel. It uses the same airbag as the S10 for 99-02

Especially if the airbags are 2 stage airbags requiring 2 inflators and different parameters for setting them off. (That's why I think the newer bags have four pins instead of 2). I've also never personally read that GM allowed any airbag wiring to be spliced, hence the reason it identified and marked the way it is, although I wouldn't swear to it as I haven't worked for a dealership in 4 years. That being said, I'd still NEVER do it.

Re: Different gm steering wheel that fits?

The trailblazer wheel posted above looked like it would possibly or atleast be a close fit, with a custom or home made adapter im sure you could make it though. Also, how in the hell do you actually get the airbag out of the new style wheel's without destroying them!?

Re: Different gm steering wheel that fits?

ok, I've been looking at alot of pictures of them and comparing, not positive but im pretty sure they would fit, only thing im not 100% on is the size of the spline, otherwise they look pretty much the same. A couple months ago I was at the junk yard and found a perfectly good tb steering wheel but i did not know exactly how to get the air bag out, so my friend tried and ended up cutting it, well then it looked like shit and I did not want it, next time im up ill look for another one and grab it

Re: Different gm steering wheel that fits?

I'm debating either a TB/FSC steering wheel or maybe a C5/C6 vette wheel... anybody know if either of those will fit on a 2002 column??
