Locker Strength: Detroit vs Lockrite
I tried a search but was not able to find any posts on this; I'm just wondering ... generally speaking, is the Detroit Locker actually stronger than the Lockrite or is it just quieter/smoother? I had a Lockrite fail on me, and I'm wondering if I should swap in another Lockrite or do the Detroit. I only care about strength, not noise/smoothness. Want to install the strongest Locker I can afford. Truck is a weekend toy built to crawl. Do you guys know? Thank you for your help!!!!

Re: Locker Strength: Detroit vs Lockrite
Are you talking a lunchbox style locker or a full "replace the carrier" locker?

Re: Locker Strength: Detroit vs Lockrite
A full Detroit will always be stronger than a Lock-Right or Detroit E-Z locker except with a FF 14 bolt, because of the stronger carrier that comes with it.
I have had bad luck with the E-Z locker, but never a Lock-Right. I'm not a throttle jockey though, so that may have something to do with it in my case. |

Re: Locker Strength: Detroit vs Lockrite
Thanks for your help guys!
The part I'm using is the Powertrax Lock Right 1822 for Ford 8.8" Rearends (I have a Dana30/Ford8.8 Combo in my s10). There is a link to it here: http://www.spiderautomotive.com/lockright1822.html I'm pretty sure it was already broken when I bought the truck. Truck always made a loud "Bang" noise while driving around, you could feel the teeth slipping. Previous owner said it was normal operation / normal noise but because of the way the rear end 'jumped' or 'shimmied' to the side when it made a "Bang" noise, I knew something was up. I took the cover off and verified one of the pins had broken, and the holes are likely elongated because previous owner thought it was normal operation and did not replace the pins in time. There is a significant price difference between a Detroit Locker and the Powertrax Lock Right. The Detroit is $625 and the Lock Right is $350, almost 1/2 the price. I'm guessing if the Lock Right already broke, I should probably put in something stronger. Do you guys think the Detroit is the way to go in my case? Or would you try it again with a Lock Right? Thanks again for all your help!! |

Re: Locker Strength: Detroit vs Lockrite
the lockrite should be plenty strong. Im running one with 35's and beat the crap out of it every weekend and no problems. If you look round you can get the lockrite for 300.

Re: Locker Strength: Detroit vs Lockrite
x2 But you really should have problems from either unit, the one you got obviously had somekind of fault. Both are good IMO. I would get what your budget allows. |
