Dana 30 cross over steer write up
So I'm doing a SAS on my 1995 S10. I'm doing with a HPD30/8.8 combo. The only issue I was having was what to do about my steering. I wanted to go spring over and that requires steering modifications. So I went online searching for a cost friendly way to fix my problem. This is how I did it!
I found the site http://www.jb4x4.com/products.htm where they sell a bracket that makes my steering possible at an affordable price. So here's how it's installed. Tools required:
Second: You take the bracket and with the two long bolts provided bolt it into place http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o...g?t=1201923949 Third: Now that the arm is in place take a 1/2" bit and drill a little bit so that you know where the center of each hole is on top of the knuckle http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o...g?t=1201923950 Fourth: Once the holes are marked take the arm off so that you can drill all the holes out. The holes need to be 27/64" the NEED to be that size because you have to tap them out to a 1/2"-13 thread. (this is the picture where you can see where the casting ridge needs to be ground off) http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o...g?t=1201923951 Fifth: Now that the holes are at EXACTLY 27/64" take your 1/2"-13 tap and tap all three holes on top of the knuckle http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o...g?t=1201923953 Sixth: Once all three holes are tapped properly you can put the bracket back on with the three small 1/2"-13 bolts (put a drop of lock tight on all three 1/2"-13 bolts) and the two longer bolts that bolt into the hub. http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o...g?t=1201923954 Seventh: Once all the bolts are threaded in torque all five to 75lbs and you're done. Good job! http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o...g?t=1201923956 This process took me about an hour to do. I had to switch drills a few times for reasons of crappy batteries. I apologize for the crappy pictures, they are from my camera phone because my normal digital camera died right as I tried to take a picture. I tried to remember every step and explain it as clearly as possible. If you have ANY questions let me know. |

Re: Dana 30 cross over steer write up
I was waiting to see what you thought Tfpets. It is pretty beefy, it weights around five pounds. Like I said it's pretty easy as long as you have a lot of drill bits to bore the holes out and the tap. And once you torque everything down it's solid.

Re: Dana 30 cross over steer write up
I never drove my s10 WITHOUT this. As you can see in my pictures I installed it before the axle ever went under the truck.
Once I got shocks and drove my truck on the road I had very minimal bump steer (only when hitting BIG potholes) until I put a steering stabilizer on. Now I can do 60mph no problem. It's a great way to get inexpensive "half high steer" I recommend this to EVERYONE using a YJ Dana 30. |

Re: Dana 30 cross over steer write up
Thanks I think this is the route I am going to go...I need to do something to fix my problems, now when you did this did you have to make a new steering link or did you re use the old one? |

Re: Dana 30 cross over steer write up
I had the pitman arm and the steering bracket reamed to work with GM 1-ton TRE's. Then I got some threaded inserts and made my own drag link out of 1.5"OD DOM tube.
My drag link is a LITTLE overkill . . . . but I like it that way. If I ever bend my tie rod (which probably won't take too long) I plan to do the same thing so it's stronger. |
