ANOTHER SAS build thread...
Well as some of you know me and my brother will be going at it again on his '90 Blazer...I decided to start this thread because I suppose it has officially started as of lunch time today...we came across a d30 from an 87 yj a few days ago at the junk yard and ideas started flying...so at lunch time today we went down there and tore it out of the jeep (took about 24 minutes
)...It has 4:11 gears and we got all of the brake and steering components with it for $180...he is going to be ordering the crossover steering bracket that baggey used on his...At the moment springs are a toss up but we are leaning towards some dakota leaves maybe mixed with some xj leaves...also going to be looking for a ford 8.8 with matching gears and hopefully (fingers crossed) a trak-loc (limited slip)...we already came across an s10 rear with 4:11s because he already has a loc-rite in his and we could swap it into that one but the added strength of the 8.8 would be nice...but anyway at the rate we get things done I am hoping this will move along quickly and we will have all of the parts collected and start tearing it down in the next week or maybe 2...the only thing I dont like is his will be better because we know what to improve on from mine... |

Re: ANOTHER SAS build thread...
8.8s never came with 4.11. They did however come with 4.10 like I have
AND mine has a trac-loc.Check out this page to find your 8.8: http://www.rangerpowersports.com/tech/?p=76 So you'll be looking for axle code 42 or D2 |

Re: ANOTHER SAS build thread...
what the hell 8.8's had factory 4.10's?? i know the rangers had them in the 4 beater trucks... im guessing the full size 4x4's had the option of 4.10's and a trac lock? hmm... anyway, i have a 8.8 rear end setup for disc brakes and a trac lock laying around im trying to get rid of... it was for a mustang project but i sold the body. you can find a stock track lock in pretty much any 5.0, 4.6 mustang and smome rangers and full sizes. mine only has 8,000 miles on it tho... came out of a buddies '03 mach 1 that he put a full locker in.

Re: ANOTHER SAS build thread...
stay with the explorer axles, the ranger and car axles are 28 spline instead of the 31 spline (full size trucks are also 31 spline).

Re: ANOTHER SAS build thread...
Well we went to our local junkyard today and looked for a rear...no such luck with a 4:10...tons of 3:73s with trak-loc though which is good news for me if something happens but it really holds up this project...oh well...although we did find a 4:10 open axle so we might attempt a quicky junkyard carrier swap although swapping ring gears would be impossible out there...we will see!

Re: ANOTHER SAS build thread...
OK quick update...got the SOA perches for the d30 today...actually got to the 4x4 shop at the same time as the Rubicon Express guy who turned out to be one of the head hanchos there...that was kinda cool...the perches are rubicon express 1920 yj soa perches and for the $31.50 they cost, its not worth the hassle of making our own...also got the JB crossover steering bracket ordered and recieved a tracking number today...it should be here on wednesday...that is some quick service!! We MAY start building and installing the front crossmember this weekend and we are planning to have that finished up and ready to hang leaf springs before we disable the blazer...it may even go on a snow run on sunday with an SAS crossmember on the front of it...

Just don't bottom out the front end and bend your new cross member. That would suck

I dont think it would bend or even budge even with a high speed collision...there is a whole lot of frame that would give before that crossmember...

Re: ANOTHER SAS build thread...
We went to the junkyard and picked up the dakota leaves yesterday...rear of course...from a '92 I think...told the guy at the front desk they were s10 front leaf springs and he looked at me really funny! Then we got the front crossmember built and tacked to the frame tonight...lots of measuring and squaring until we were sure it was exactly right and BAM there it was...the first peice is attached!! The crossover steering bracket will be here tommorow so we will get the axle pressure washed and start attaching it...so there is a good possibility we tear all of the IFS out this weekend and start on the rear hangers...it is certainly much easier the second time around and we have much more confidence so we should move along pretty quickly!

Re: ANOTHER SAS build thread...
Its been a couple of weeks since we worked on it...we took some time off for spring break and a camping trip, then recovered from that...we got after it again yesterday morning and got the front IFS torn out and the rear hanger platforms finished up...we got the front done a while back so we will be ready to hang springs and get the axle under there today...we should have time to get the steering hooked up and get it out of the garage for some outside pics...we have figured out that they used different 231 tcases in these years though...there is one with a smaller output/yolk, which has a VERY short slip yolk which of course is in his blazer...and there is one with a larger output shaft and much longer slip yolk (like both of mine)...we are going to get one at the junk yard the next few days and the yolk to go with it...then we are going to have to get the drivelines figured out/built...he has decided to go with another chevy 7 5/8 rear end with 4:11 gears due to a couple of factors...1. He already has a lock right for it...2. We couldnt find a 4:10 explorer 8.8...3. Ummm well just because! He is going to have the axles and drums re-drilled to 5x4.5 so he doesnt have to use different wheels...there is a guy that will do it for about $70 in town...I have some pics of the install of the raised steering backet install and a few of the front crossmember and rear platforms I will try to get up soon and hopefully a few of it sitting on the new axle later today!!

Re: ANOTHER SAS build thread...
I take it you're talking about the rear output shaft? I'm putting a 231 in my s10 soon, should I get the rear drive shaft as well just in case?

Re: ANOTHER SAS build thread...
Well right now I have a big one with a decent amount of slip to it. So we'll see what happens tomorrow when I get the new Tcase, I'm going from an NP233 to an NP231. Anyone know if they are different output shafts in the rear?

FYI 207's and 231's have completely different output shafts, and the 233 might as well.

Re: ANOTHER SAS build thread...
OK on the tcase...My 233's both have the larger output shaft...my brothers 231 has a small output shaft...we went to the junkyard and saw several examples of 231's with the small or the large output shaft...it seems that the newer 1st gens have the larger one (92 and up)...all of them are marked 231 c, and there seems to be no other differences...so we got a 231 from a 92 4 door blazer and put it in his blazer...he now has the larger output shaft which makes life much simpler...also I got some pics edited finally so here they are...I will try to get a pic of the differences in the yolks tonight and post it up...and the 231 tag on both of the tcases...
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We did a bunch of work on it over couple days and never got any pics (DOH!)...So this is what it looked like when we were able to push it outside... ![]() Last edited by tfpets : 04-08-2008 at 04:05 PM. |

Re: ANOTHER SAS build thread...
you can see from the t-case tags that one is the 231c "HD", and the other is a non "HD". this might be where the difference lies, as the HD's are only found behind 4.3's.

Everything we are dealing with is 4.3...the only good s10 motor!

Re: ANOTHER SAS build thread...
SO im sure alot of you know the the subject of this thread was destroyed by a drunk driver last thursday...so friday night we went and picked up another blazer, a 92 4-door with a blown engine for $400...so the work began on sunday night so I will try to get you all up to date...oh and BTW the drunk driver had no insurance so it is all covered on uninsured motorist so a check for $2267 was issued today...not to shabby!

If you look to the back of the spring you can see it hanging from the "hanger"...it is a stock dakota shackle...or is this just another attempt at selling shackles??![]() |

Re: ANOTHER SAS build thread...
WHEW!! Just got done with the engine switch...pulled the bad one from the new blazer last night, pulled the good one from the red blazer this morning and installed the good one in the new blazer this afternoon...due to the heat (about 102 in my driveway) we didnt start stabbing it until about 7:30 when it started to cool off a bit...fired it up at about 11:00 and it runs great (of course)! Also managed to get all of the IFS brackets cut off throughout the day so the frame is MUCH cleaner now...also got rid of the ABS and switched a lot of the brake lines from the old one to the new one...so if we can keep up the momentum the rear should be in the air tommorow and all of the brake plumbing should be done...its nice to have a whole day to work instead of 3-4 hours a night!

Re: ANOTHER SAS build thread...
We decided not to do the rear today and instead button up everything in the front...we got the brakes plumbed and working...built the front shock mounts...retro-fitted the a/c and got it working...buttoned up everything on the engine including finding out the radiator had split the header from the pressure of the blown head gasket on the other motor, so that set us back a little while going to town to get one...but anyway we took it for a ride earlier and it drives like a dream, except that we can only see blue sky! With a little luck we will have the axle out the red blazer tommorow night and putting the 4:11 gears in another housing, just crossing my fingers that we can set it up and get a good pattern without to much trouble and have the new blazer all buttoned up by the end of the week...I really want to shoot for a shakedown run over memorial weekend!!

Re: ANOTHER SAS build thread...
You are absolutely welcome to all of the IFS stuff...if you want to come get it
...but there are 2 3:42 front diffs, 4 cv axles, 2 regular hubs and 2 ABS hubs, and anything else that would come off with 2 tear downs...we tried to sell the stuff on craigslist pretty cheap and not a single bite on anything...so we are now to the point of just giving it away to anyone who has a need...we may have a perfect G80 3:42 rear end soon also...what a shame! OH and I have no idea what this "rust" is you speek of?? Ive never seen that before??Last edited by tfpets : 05-19-2008 at 04:36 PM. |

Re: ANOTHER SAS build thread...
Got the rear end setup tonight...came out perfect, and it was easy...the only hard part was getting the bent axle out of the housing...it took a few creative cuts in the tube and taking the bearing caps loose but we finally got it...and in the end we found out both of the axles got bent...the carrier and the lock right seemed to have survived so we now have a usable rear end...now the axles are off to get re-drilled for the 5x4.5 wheels and it should be ready to roll! Until we get the axles back we will be doing the SOA and figuring out what to do for a rear driveline...we have a few choices laying around in my yard and a whole lot of choices at the junkyard so something should turn up!
