1998 S-10 Manual Trans
so i need to find out what transmission is in my 98 S-10. of course its a 98 with a 4.3 vortec 4x4 5 speed. this is my first chevy project and im trying to figure out some stuff for my sas. im doing a chevy front axle with the front drivesahft being on the pass side. im a jeep guy not a chevy guy but as i understand i can possibly use a transfer case out of a fullsize to obviously swap my front driveshaft to the other side.
also what do yous think about a front 10 bolt with aftermarket chromoly shafts geared and locked with say 38's or so. dont really feel like throwing a 60 in it yet. need to become more comfortable with wheeling a truck now. im used to my 01 grand cherokee. i plan on using the truck to be non street legal and run it at rausch creek for their rc rocks comps. i ran a cj previously there. just looking for some input thanks |

the tranny i believe is the nv3500. to use a fullsize t case you would have to get the tail housing off a fullsize tranny. the 10 bolt is basically the same as a d44. most say 36-37 is the largest you Should go but others have made it work. Rocks are always harder on axles then mud

Unless you already have all of the parts, why would you want to swap the axle to the other side? I would think it would be easier to just to get an axle with the pumpkin on the driver side.

Re: 1998 S-10 Manual Trans
yea i do have all the parts. i found a hp ford 44 for like 50 bucks but i would rather do a older fullsize chevy case with a fixed yoke or build a fixed yoke setup instaed of the slip. just thinking trying to think ahead of the game. you can use all factory parts to buld a case and its cheaper to get a 4-1 kit. also the chevy axle perches are perfect width apart and would just bolt in with my leafs already hanging there

Re: 1998 S-10 Manual Trans
s10s have a 5 bolt t case and the fullsize have a 6 bolt tcase , so the RH drop would require some kind of adapter plate or a tranny swap also,

Re: 1998 S-10 Manual Trans
since chevys all use the same trans bellhousing to motor pattern, dont you think i could use say a nv4500 trans out of a full size to bolt to my 4.3 and us the same case out of it?

Re: 1998 S-10 Manual Trans
nv4500 is an excellant choice,, it has the round bolt pattern on the back ( 6 bolt) so you can run a 241 or 208 RH drop or a LH drop 241 t case,, or if you can find a LH drop np205
You might find out how much room you need between the top of the tranny housing and your crossmember, the nv4500 maybe kind of tall for a s10,,,,or you can cut the top of the tranny housng out to make it fit if its too tall, |

Re: 1998 S-10 Manual Trans
i wouldnt recomend running a large older case. they hang way below the frame and create a nice hang up point.
