steering shaky

alright, so I recently changed out my steering set up. I went from a stock grand cherokee pitman arm to 4-8 drop pitman arm for a grand cherokee. Now if i hit enough little bumps i the road it the steering wheel starts moving left to right which makes the whole truck shake. I cannot figure out what it is. This happend to my friends dodge ram but it was because his traction bar bracket was cracked. Do i need a wheel alignment? i do have some play of the wheel to start.

thanks

Re: steering shaky

sounds like the death wobble. my buddies jeep did that and no shop could ever figure it out... i kept telling him the bushings in his upper/lower arms were stretched to max (put 150 coils in) and wore out... sure enough, new bushings fixed it.... on yours, dont know if thats the case... what springs and arms are you running?

Re: steering shaky

what type of suspension are you using in the front coils or leafs? Do you have a steering stabilizer? do you have a panhard bar with good bushings? it you are using the stock stabilzer from the D30 they are prone to going bad and will not absorb the "bump" in the steering effectivly. also if using the stock steering setup from the D30 you changed the angle of the steering which may cause an alignment problem.

Re: steering shaky

For suspension its stock s10 springs, that are starting to sag now. there is no pan hard bar, I was thinking about getting one but i dont know if it would be wort getting

Re: steering shaky

a worn bearing can cause the death wobble so that might be the cure. Also a steering stablizer shoudnt be used to cure a problem like that, it should be just to make draving more comfortable.

X2, anything loose or worn in the steering or front end can contribute.

Re: steering shaky

death wobble is usually assosicated with linked suspensions. I know mine would lean horibly in curves and while turning until i installed a panhard bar. I have also had a truck that would get unstable while breaking or driving on uneven pavement due to the shackles being too long with out a center support in them.

Re: steering shaky

im going to try to put a pan hard bar on. All the shaky started after I purchased a drop Pittman arm haha. My power steering box leaks and i think it maybe worn out so im going to replace that also and get a new steerig stabilizer. The tshaking is only if one front tire hits uneven surface and the other doesnt, and this doesnt happen all the time either only after the right bumps

Re: steering shaky

Be sure to make your panhard bar the same length as your drag-link and mount it at the same angle.

Re: steering shaky

you think the stock one from a jeep wrangler. like the one that originally came on the axle would work? If I made a bracket on the frame that is

Re: steering shaky

I'm not familiar with them ( i aviod Heeps!), but I'm sure that it could be made to work.
Is it the same length as your drag-link?

Re: steering shaky

yes, I would believe considering I have the stock drag link. I founded out my ptiman arm was loose, so that helped most of te shaking but i believe that i just need an alignment now. I 99% sure i have toe on my wheels. I just picked up a set of 35x12.5 thornbirds from a buddy so im going to wait to put those on
