Re: Sas Info

So i was thinking about it last night, and im trying to figure out why i have a crazy death wobble at about 25. I know it could be a combination of things, but i dont have any shock on it at the moment, my caster is at about 15* with the upper ball joints back, and i haven't put had the front end aligned yet. This is what im thinking why its so bad, but a lil confirmation would help. And also, my blazer is doing alot of leaning instead of turning, any thoughts? I can get my steering wheel to go lock to lock, but it seems like it should turn tighter. Thanks guys.

Re: Sas Info

i had problems with leaning also. it got better when i put on the histeer arm. I have just a little bit now. Im hoping that the astro box fixes the last little bit.

I guess, whatever it is when the upper ball joint is leaning towards the rear of the vehicle, or the pinion shaft turned towards the ground. However best describes it.

Re: Sas Info

I think he meant that 15* is a bit excessive. I set them a little at around 7*.

Re: Sas Info

From what I understand, in order to reduce the possibility of death wobble and any other problems, a lot of folks typically set their caster anywhere up to 6* or so.
I can't say that a few degrees more would hurt, but I am just passing on a lot of what I was told in the long time before I went SFA. I'm not sure what mine is right now, but I think it is right in that ballpark.

Re: Sas Info

Hey do me a favor...take a picture of the front axle while its in the truck...I was looking at your past pictures and trying to figure out what is up with your steering...your draglink and steeringlink look odd compared to mine thats why I wanted to know...I finished mine up today and took it for a drive...brakes are awesome, and I dont have any death wobble as you call it...or else maybe I am not thinking of what you are talking about...either way a picture of your steering would be awesome...ill have pics of mine up shortly

Re: Sas Info

i have found that some of the blazers came with a speed sensitive steering. I guess the box tightens and loosens. according to speed. Im not sure on the specifics but my blazer has this and after i get off the freeway i get horrible deathwobble from bumps, but the whole ride home on the freeway at 65-70 i have no issues. Ive bee told that the faster i go the tigher the box gets. I do know that my dad had the blazer in multiple times when he owned it because of the steering box felt loose on the city streets after a freeway drive.

Re: Sas Info

nyteryda, Im on vacation this week and im gonna see if i can come up with pics of it on my comp. If not i have a picture of the type of vehicle it came off of, a 1995 grand cherokee, its called some sort of y-link setup up or something. Did you have any probs with your caster angle???

Billaksblazer, I have never heard of this, that would be a helluva contraption to see how it would work. I will look into it and see what i have though.

Re: Sas Info

Well personally my steering setup is different than yours, since mine is a yj (wrangler) setup and yours is a grand cherokee you said. I just took it for a drive on the highway today, and had no problems on or off from 0-80 didnt find a need to go over 80 but you know.

And for my caster I dont think its bad, I really dont feel any problems besides some bumpsteer, which I am going to fix with a highsteer setup...mind you now I only have 3in shackles in the rear, I havent done a flip yet or put in my 8.8 so things might get better or worse for me in the upcoming weeks...ill keep you posted

Re: Sas Info

That would be awesome if you keep me updated. Im already figuring on purchasing the rugged ridge steering setup for it. This is just to allow me to move it around the yard and out of my dads way so he can get bodywork done and cars ready for paint. I was just tryin it to see if it would have any problems, which it did. Ill get around to fixing it. I wouldn't even care if i had some bump steer, it wouldn't phase me a bit.

Re: Sas Info

Haha, I will. We charged the battery in it last night, and re arranged the relays underneath the hood and that sum bitch started right up this morning!!!! I dont think you could ever kill it!!!

Yea i looked into the jb4x4 high steer arm and my blazer will eventually get one and the one i picked up from you will deff have to have one when its spring over. I just have really crappy y-link setup off of all the coil spring heeps. It just allows me to move her around the yard.

Re: Sas Info

Heres something else i was thinking about trying too. Its a toyota winch mount/ bumper start. 4wdfactory has them, ill more than likely be pming 4wdjoey about it so i can get some measurements and maybe figuring out a start to a decent bumper build.

and heres the link to it too.

Re: Sas Info

Hey guys,

I got 2 of my tires this weekend from my best friend who just gave um to me with a ton of tread left, just gotta dig the other two out of his fiance's parents house. I just rolled um up next to it and they look pretty good! I also plan on ordering my shocks, brake lines and shims from 4wd joey this week! then i can hopefully get the rugged ridge steering setup and the astro van box. finally the wheels and she should be back driveable on the road!

Re: Sas Info

Well i took measure ments of the frame rails, but i didnt get to do it as much as i would have like since it was pouring down and what not. But it looks as though i will be able to use the toyota mount with probably a 3x3" 1/4 wall stock welded to the frame rails to bring it out a lil bit, then some 1/4" flat plate to make the bolt mounts and gusset it back to the stock or frame. Ill be able to visualize it a little more hopefully this weekend when i head back to the wedding, but im thinking about just knotching my stock bumber to fit the mount in it and keep it looking stock, but it would be like a 2 piece bumber.... we will see!

Re: Sas Info

well i got 4wdjoey finalizing the order i need for the shocks brakes and shims. so i will hopefully have them soon!!!! i also saw something on powerblock this weekend on trucks that i was considering. That tie rod over the knuckle conversion. i know it will get the tie rod up and out of the way of the rocks, but does anyone think it will help out with the steering link angle or whatever??? i though it might, just like a high steer kit kinda. thanks guys!!

Re: Sas Info

Well guys progress is slow as all get out. I finally got up to home depot to get some saw zall blades. And as i got back and started cutting out the brackets it started raining. DAMN!!!! of course it would. But that didn't stop me, i set up a beach umbrella and kept working on that side. Got it to the point where im sure i can get the Ford shock tower into position. If anyone else has them currently installed, pics would be awesome!!!! I only worked on it for about an hour today, so im hoping i can get alot more done tomorrow before i have to head back to school. Ill get some pics up tomorrow too!!! thanks guys!

Re: Sas Info

got some done today. all the ifs brackets tourched off, one side is pretty much done on the shock mount, other is tacked on and will be finished up this weekend along with the shims and brake lines. We will see. I wanted to finish it over my fall break but didn't work out. but here are some pics!

I did leave one side of the upper arm mount in the rear to attach the mount. Worked out pretty good. We will see how it works. If it doesnt work out, ill change it. No Big.

hmmm, didn't think about that. the shocks are 13.5" travel, and i set the shock showing 6 and 3/4 of an inch, you think that will be enough?

Re: Sas Info

flex it all the way and see. If the shackles are straight or slightly foward you are using all the travel the springs have if not your shocks are limiting you. Most of the hard core guys who have offroad only trucks run 3-4" uptravel and the rest down.

The front didn't tuck too well yet but it has been sitting in my yard too, gotta get it back on the road and get those springs broke in. Flexed it yestereday, looks to me like it will work out with the way i have it. But if need be i can always change it later.

Got the shocks bolted up tight and painted the frame rails while i was there. Have to order longer ubolts...the ones i got are too short when i install the shims. No big, but i also drove it around a lil bit today, not too far, got it up to about 45 w/o any bump steer!!!! and i flexed it again.
