Project Whiplash

Well, she's getting enough attention, so i figured i would start a project thread.

the SAS part of this project will be slow and probably not for a little bit, but the plans are as follows:

5.7L
doubler (not sure what cases yet)
10bolt front / 12bolt rear for now
33's for now

ill be using her for a wide range of things like mud bogging, rock crawling, and grocery getting haha!

here she is, the day after i bought her

Here is later that afternoon

My second modification was to get rid of the stock crappy 'no-tach' cluster in favor of my blacked out cluster

Well, then i got bored driving around town and stuff, so i decided to go the opposite route i had planned for her...

Then i decided i wanted a more agressive look to her

I then decided it was time to start having some fun

Then i tore the torsion bar cross member mounts in half!

So i replaced them both and added some fog lights, cranked the t-bars as far as they would go, and built some 3" lift shackles

went mudding again, and smashed the passenger side one in

Then i went mudding again

i got a bit too carried away, plus we were having a party/bonfire/mudbog thing... got her a bit warm, and smashed the driver side fog light in.

the next morning

couple days later i went out and took some pictures

i washed her the next day, took me 2 hours

after washing her, i went to get some groceries, but couldnt because the guy who rebuilt the engine put the mount right on top of the starter wire...

Re: Project Whiplash

then i got sick of leaking oil everywhere, so i decided it was time to take the intake mani off and do it properly...

and that is where im at today.

this is what i have in store for her

and thats all for now. tomorrow im going to start putting the engine back together, and we'll see how she does.

i need to get a shop or somewhere i can do some welding so i can finish my bagged truck and start DD'ing it so i can SAS this one.

Re: Project Whiplash

basically what i have figured out so far is:

Diffs
front - 10bolt
rear - 12bolt

Leafs
front - 52" 3/4 Chevy
rear - 56" Suburban

Pitman Arm
78/79 Ford Bronco 3" drop arm

Steering Box
Chevy Astro Van

Steering
D44 knuckles with pass side flat top and Sky hi-steer Arms

Tires
31" tires to start, moving up to 37" (probably irocs) next (will also upgrade axles when they break from the 37's)

Driveshafts
Ill have to see when im ready for them haha, i think ill do a PTO driveshaft for the front though...

Engine / Transmission / Transfer Cases
350TBI / TH350 / 203/205 doubler maybe? not sure on these yet...

I havent figured out the brakes yet... i think i recall something about people using steel braided line instead of the rubber line, but i dont know...

Im planning to custom fab up my own front cross member and hangers and everything

Re: Project Whiplash

4 hours into it today, and i have it all reassembled. just waiting for the RTV to set a bit before i start it.

i went overkill. there is a tiny bit that didnt ooze out, but there was like... a 3/8" bead laid down along the whole surface

yes, this is what was done before... notice the great adhesion on the top side. this was a professional job, thats for sure

i just like this picture, looks pretty cool with the injectors exposed haha!

i really wish i could have dropped a 350 in here instead, but funds did not allow this time

Re: Project Whiplash

well... i think i have the timing wrong...

i put it all back together fine, took it for a drive, and the first time it was boggy at low speeds, but hauled ass at higher speeds
i got back home, turned the dizzy maybe 1/8 turn counter clockwise, and she drove REALLY good, had tons of power off the line and all that, but then she started sounding like she was missing really heavy when i would floor it from a stand still...

maybe i have the timing too advanced? i checked the plug wires, and they are all on good, so im thinking my timing is still out...

Re: Project Whiplash

well, i think i actually had the timing pretty good hahaa! turns out there was a burn hole in one of the spark plug wires. i noticed the even side wires were hanging on the side of the engine, almost touching the manifold, so i moved them up out of the way and got a wicked shock!

so i taped up the hole with about 3ft of black tape until i can get to napa or pick n pull for some more wires haha

timing is a bitch, i hate doing it hahaha

Re: Project Whiplash

i'll be joining you here soon, at least axle wise. what'd you get the front and rear axle from? got an 87 i'm putting a 350 in here in the next few weeks. should be a fun little project i think. plan on live axle front end and at least a spring over in the rear.

i bought the front and rear axles, plus a NP203 transfer case from a dude who upgraded to 1ton stuff in his 79 K5 blazer. picked it all up for 100 bucks haha

i wanna get my 350 +.030 block here so bad so i can start building it for this truck. i DEFINITELY want to do a TBI 350. it is alot easier that i thought to (at least i think its easier than i thought) haha! when i was tearing down my 4.3L, i was thinking that all this stuff will just plug right into the 350... right?

Re: Project Whiplash

well, i bought a timing light, and got her all set. i had her like... WAY off! the timing mark on the crank was almost straight up and down, but she had ALOT of balls... i got her set to 0° and she is kinda gutless again... it sucks, but at least she's not idling weird and stalling anymore...

how far do i want to advance it though? i dont necessarily want to have to run a higher octane fuel, but i would like a little more pep out of the motor haha.

Re: Project Whiplash

just replaced the idler arm on her, now she doesnt toe in on hard acceleration hahaa!

i started looking at the underside more thoroughly to get an idea of what all has to be removed for the SAS... does that cross member that runs under the engine have to go? im not sure if it would be in the way or not... if it doesnt, i might look into making a more compact version...

I was running 8* of advance on the 92. Ran it on 91 octane, it seemed to bog on 87.

Re: Project Whiplash

i dont have the $$ for 91 haha, so im just gunna leave it alone.

she seems to be running too rich though... when i try to start it, if she doesnt start right away, it takes like... 5 seconds of cranking to start, and she struggles...

anyways, some awesome news!
im getting a complete rolling chassis (engine, transmission, t-case, driveshafts, axles, leaf springs, rims, tires, shocks, frame) from my uncle for 150 bucks. its a 79 F350 with a D44 front, and full floating D60 rear, divorced t-case, all that good stuff haha

Are you sure it's not a 60 front?

not sure... being a F350, im thinking so, but my uncle says its a 44... he's got another F350 with a D60 front, and D80 (i think) rear

really? haha, thats not that much i guess... my blaze has a 13gal tank. takes about 40 to fill it here in alberta. took 40 to put 3/4 tank in bc...

freaking 106.9 there! 87.9 here!

Re: Project Whiplash

finally got my pictures from 4x4'ing in my mom's back yard back in BC!

found a barb wire fence, and got it wrapped around my axle about 3 times haha!

cutting the fence with bolt cutters. very lucky it didnt shred the tire!

my brother spotting me up the rock

made it! stopped about 3" before the tree haha!

driving around with my little brother

ended up bending something we think... when i was all done, i had some pretty nasty toe in... i drove it 30km to my dad's shop and we put it up on a hoist and looked at it for a good 45 minutes, checking everything. i killed the new idler arm already, but that wouldnt be enough to cause a nasty toe in... so we cranked the pass side tie rod out about 7 full turns to get the tires straight enough to drive again...

im still scratching my head on this one. we just cant figure out what happened...

He's right, if that is an F350 it should be a 60. That's exactly what my front axle came out of.

Re: Project Whiplash

the rear would be a 80 then right?

if its only a F250, then it would be a 44/60?

i really dont know what it is now... haha

it has a 360, 4 spd manual (i think (its def. a manual)) and a divorced t-case, reg. cab longbox. and it has super old split rims hahaa! other than that, i dont know anything about this truck...

Re: Project Whiplash

its not a dually, so i guess it'll be the 60. thats still awesome though! ill be able to build a super tough truck! man, i wanna start welding up the front cross member now! i wanna get this rolling!

plans are to integrate a hitch receiver into the front cross member. might go with 1 or 3... im definitely going to have 1 receiver in the middle, but im thinking about 1 in line with each side of the frame so i can have removable toe hooks... we'll see...
then i can build the shackle hangers and get those welded to the frame

would it be a good or bad idea to weld the front cross member and shackle hangers to the frame before actually taking the truck off the road to SAS it? i want to be able to have everything ready to go so i can just get the F350 chassis taken apart and bolt all the stuff up to the blazer...

ive got to find out if the F350 front axle has a pass side flat top... im really hoping it does!

Re: Project Whiplash

If all your measurements are right i dont see the problem with doing it before hand. Then just come in when you finally do take it off, torch or sawzall everything out and slap it in. I would just make sure that you have the f350 sitting next to it so you can see how its going to work. It should go fairly smoothly if you do infact get everything you need and have it already welded up...

haha, the neighbors are complaining so much about a couple of extra vehicles on our property in the back yard haha! i'd hate to see what they do when i bring the chassis down here hahaha!

it does run though! if i could bolt a piece of metal to the floor and bolt a seat to it, all i would need to do is hook the steering column back up and she would drive!

If it's the 60 as it should be then it will be a HP kinkpin design with flat tops on both sides. It's THE front axle to have.

I should have been more specific. As far as factory options go, it's the axle to have. The Dynatrac D80 is crazy strong, but it gives up a lot of ground clearance and I bet they are VERY expensive. I have $350 in my front axle.

Re: Project Whiplash

Hate to disappoint you, but it sounds like a closed knuckle 44 from an early 70's Ford. Does it have drum brakes on the front also?

shit, i hope not! i would be slightly less than excited...

my uncle said it was a late 70's ford F350. but i guess he could be wrong? what if its a F250? then it would have a 44 front, right?

ive not seen the truck yet, but i REALLY hope its got a HP 60 front!
