Re: Dana 30 axle

When I did mine I burned the rubber out and caved the sleeve in on its self with an air chisel.

Re: Dana 30 axle

Ok so I got the old bushing sleeves out, then I went and bought the listed bushings for a 97 s10 blazer and guess what....they were too f*n small, so I had to special order them from the dealership should be here monday or tuesday...this truck is turning into a headache...still need to hook up front brakes and steering and finish the lift shackles in the rear...

but on a brighter note I found out where I can get an 8.8 with 4:10's and traklock for 60 bucks...so thats not bad.

Now my issues lies with a front driveshaft...im thinking of cutting the stock s10 shaft and mating it with a cherokee shaft for the time being...anyone have input? I dont have the time or money to rip out my transfer case and swap output shafts at the time...I have been without a truck for a month now because of weather money and parts issues...lemme know
thanks in advance

Re: Dana 30 axle

wont work.. the sotck driveshaft has a CV joint on it, and it wont allow enough droop.
just get it done and run er in 2wd til you can get a front shaft.. i got like 120 in my shaft

I suppose they are referring to putting a jeep flange driveshaft up front. I just had a custom shaft made. I don't care for the flanges, personally.

Re: Dana 30 axle

Ok, so I know this may seem like a stupid question but right now I am at the point where I dont care...its easier for me to just replace my rear leaf springs after all the hell I have gone through with bushings...and trying to special order them and what not...so I am going to pick up a set of used leaf springs...

my question is does it really matter if they are for a 2wd or 4wd? what is the main difference between spring load rates and what not?

any input is greatly appreciated

Re: Dana 30 axle

Not sure if eye to eye is the same?

But the 4x4 should have an extra leaf?

And you know they ARE diff 2door vs 4door.

Re: Dana 30 axle

Yeah I know that these springs that i am looking at are off a 2002 2 door 2wd they are only 90 bucks with 30k miles on them not bad...but I want to know if they will work...they wont be as sturdy as the 4x4 springs but I figured that would allow for more flexing maybe?

Re: Dana 30 axle

i dont think the 2wd springs are the same length. i could be worng but. If you do get them make sure you add at least 2 leafs into them.

Re: Dana 30 axle

Ok well I gave in and cut the bolts to hell from the rear leaf springs took them to a shop and had new bushings pressed in...for 59 bucks it saved me the troubles of finding new leaf springs...

I was trying to avoid that because I didnt know how much it would cost but it was worth it in the end...

Now with the rear "done" I am zipping up the front..need to pull the wheel bearing on the passenger side still..hoping to get that done tomorrow...then brakes and steering and it should be 2wd drivable...lol

Then just on to get my 8.8 and get that mofo in there and I should be good...for a while that is

Yeah for sure it becomes a tedious pain...but I am working through it, got my steering hooked up today...seems to be off a quarter of a turn...but it looks like my steering link is too short to reach it when its correct...so I may have to lengthen that...but its ok for now...

tomorrow I hope to replace the bad wheel bearing and finish the front brakes...if I can then it will be "drivable" lol...wish me luck

oh and input on my steering issue would be fantastic

Re: Dana 30 axle

Sounds like your pitman arms aren't long enough to me. I had to make pitman arms for my D44 and my D60 to get them long enough to turn lock to lock.

Here is the one from the D44. Cut the ends off of you pitman and grind them down until the look like donuts. Then just cut out a "pitman arm" from some 3/4" plate, heat it up and bend it to the amount drop you need, then cut holes in each end large enough to fit the "donuts" into the holes and weld them in. It's ugly, but it has used for many years with no problems.

Well, I ordered my 8.8 flip kit from 4wdfactory.com today hopefully that gets here soon, and I can get the 8.8 in my truck...I still need rims for the rear, and brake lines and little stuff but it should come together quick...

Re: Dana 30 axle

just buy the perches for like 30 bucks and weld then on. the flip kit wont work because the factory ford perches have to be moved anyway.

Re: Dana 30 axle

Well I have good news and I have bad news...lol...my sas is kinda done the front is done...doing the 8.8 next week...but I went to start my truck today and realized that when I went wheeling 2 months ago...I destroyed my motor mounts...and since the truck has been up and down off jackstands it settled the motor...so tomorrow I replace those and then hopefully get to drive it...ill have pics tomorrow

Re: Dana 30 axle

Ok well anyway up with some pics...I am going to swap the 97 front end out tomorrow with the noma front end from Tim. I have the fenders on already but the bumper grill and headlights will go on tomorrow after I get a core support...
Front shot

Side shot

wheel shot

I think that is pretty good shackle angle my measurements from the front eye to the rear eye is 44.25 inches not bad.

I still need an 8.8 hopefully this week I will get that, then I need rims

Now for brakes, mine are perfect just like they were with the IFS set up...and "deathwobble" is non existent, I do however have a lot of play in my steering, and hitting bumps really jerks my steering so I figured a highsteer setup with new steering link and drag link with heim joints would fix that problem(or maybe its just something I have to get used to)....also a stock yj arm would work after that too. Well any questions or comments would be awesome.

Re: Dana 30 axle

I really wish that front axle were more level like the rear axle but maybe those springs will settle in a little more for you.

The steering issue you are talking about is called "bump steer." It shouldn't be doing that if the steering is setup properly, so I would go with that high steer if you get the chance.

Yeah, just from first hand experience and I know you have a superlift already done so your aware of how projects go, but make sure you do as much research as possible, and get as much as you can before hand...keep money on the side because these projects will nickel and dime you to death...good luck man

Well I was just talking about the difference in height of the spring eye's on each end of the spring. On the rear, they are a bit closer to the same level, but on the front, the front spring eye is quite a bit higher than the rear.

Could make the front axle cycling different than normal, but then again you may not ever know much of a difference.
