big azz truck/big azz motor: freinds build

so heres the deal. my freinds got a mid 80's model full size chevy truck hes building. the cab/bed is off the frame right now, and we just put the 18" lift srings on it that he custom ordered online, its got 8 lug axles. we just took the the 350 out becuase i found a big block for him nad he bought it (its pictured below)... hes already got the wheels/tires... there 20" KMC sytle wheel, black and chrome wrapped with 49" Swamper Irocks... there HUGE!!!. we just loaded up the motor today... its a crate 454 with 3,300 miles on it, its a mild cam and as you can see, a high rise tunnel ram with two holley cabs on it... paid $850 for the motor like it sits which i thought was a good deal... sorry i dont have pics of the actual truck yet, but i will this weekend!! heres some pics of the motor we just loaded up today to hold you guys over: (oh yeah, the 2500HD is his daily driver, its on 39.5 Irocks, 6.0L)

Re: big azz truck/big azz motor: freinds build

I forsee him having to carry a ladder around just to get in and out of the giant beast. Also I have to agree on the tunnel ram/dual carb setup, it's less than ideal with an intended RPM range of 3500 to 8500rpm. His bottom end torque and driveability will suck. He'd probably be alot happier with a dual plane intake/single carb setup with a 1500 to 6500rpm operating range.

Re: big azz truck/big azz motor: freinds build

Holy leaf springs, Batman.
Looks like he should have plenty of room for any size tires he wants.
Of course, with the body and motor in that will look quite a bit more reasonable.
Thinking there will be any issue with the front driveline angle because of the LP axle?

Re: big azz truck/big azz motor: freinds build

yeah he's looking into a HP axle, but for now he just wants to get it together and get a rear driveshaft made, just so he can drive it and move it around. so for a while it will only be 2wd.

Re: big azz truck/big azz motor: freinds build

me too!! but hes being lazy as hell!! he took the 454 down the street to a guy that runs competition mud bog trucks, they crunk the motor up an let it run on the engine stand and decided to throw a bigger cam and new timing chain on it. there using an old school 2 points distributor for now. if you notice in the pic with the frame, it is only sitting on 38" Thornturds... i wish he was home so i could have snapped some pics of the 49" Iroks, they look insane on the 20" black and polished wheels...

Re: big azz truck/big azz motor: freinds build

trust me, theres plenty of trucks around here on tractor tires... its just rare that you see them becuase they cant drive them on the street. a distant buddy of ours one county south of us has a '90 chevy 4 door longbed truck with 60" combine tires on it, you can see it over the roof of his mobile home... theres another truck that runs at the mud boggs, its a late 50's - early 60's body style chevy truck, with a cummins deisel, TH350 tranny (which he cracked in half at the last run of the night), rockwells and combine tires. truck is NUTS!, i might be at the mud boggs this saturday.. if its there ill take pics of it.

-anyway, my buddy has just got done putting the new passengerside knuckle on for the crossover steering and put all new ball joints and all the linkages on the front axle... i guess he's going to somehow run the low pinion dana 44 for now untill he can locate some different axles... we'll see... oh and he says he should have the body/cab back on and 454 should be sitting in the framerails sometime this month...

Re: big azz truck/big azz motor: freinds build

UH OH! looks like we got the cab on the frame!!. that was a bitch. 4 people using dry rotted 2x6 boards, that cab was heavy as hell. we rolled the 49"s up next to the front axle, we couldnt mount them up becuase we tried to jack the front up to bolt the front ones up to get an idea of how it would look, but when we tried to jack the front up, the truck started tilting real bad and it was too scary, so we just rolled them up next to where they would mount up. just think, the axle has to come up about 8" for these tires to be mounted. so as your looking at the pictures of the truck, it will sit up about 8" higher than what the pictures show. in the picture where my buddy is holding the brown front fenders up, i had them hold the fender up about 6" to show where the truck would be sitting with the tires on it. anyway, enjoyZ de pic-chus!

If I built something like that, it would have tractor tires and Rockwells. Then I would drive into my asshole neighbors yard and till it up.

Re: big azz truck/big azz motor: freinds build

lol, now he wants to sell the 49"s and get some 54" boggers! i told him to chill the fVck out! and lets just get this thing finished already. the 454 is put together, and they had it running on an engine stand, so its ready to drop in also. and he also traded his NP208 to a guy for a working TH350/NP205 combo... so that will be going in also. (the guy needed the 208 for his mud racing/boggin truck). he WILL be using the LP/D44 front axle, but i convinced him to take it to a shop and have it cut and turned to fix the pinion angle problem, and he's getting a front driveshaft made with cv-joints or whatever you call them. this truck is a pure novelty truck obviously. but he will drive it (untill the cops **** with him, but his dad is a bigtime lawyer out here), and i can almost guarantee that it will be seen at the local mud boggs. at the last mud boggs i went to, i didnt see the early 60's chevy with a cummins turbo deisel and tracter tires truck on rockwells, since he split the TH350 tranny in half last time im guessing hes building something stronger, but check out this old Dodge truck sittin on 2.5 ton rockewells and i believe if i remember right some 44" ground hawgs. it was huge, but everytime he treid to run it down the track it kept spittin' and sputterin'. heres also some pics of the mud bogg track before anyone ran that night...

If i was him i wouldnt even waste my time or money on the D44. It will never hold up to 49s and a big block. I would look into a dana 60 or rockwells

i know 44's are a little smaller especially when you start getting into the bigger tires like this. but the guy i bought my 44s from was running them with a dana 44 up front with a 454 and either a 150 or 200 shot of nitrous, he had no problems with the mud bogs he was in.

Re: big azz truck/big azz motor: freinds build

There is a bunch of people around me that was running 44s with a dana 44 and breaking axle shafts and hubs every week. if u spend the money on good shafts and hubs then it might hold up but for the same price you could get a dana 60 or a set of rockwells. hell i had a 75 chevy with 38.5s on it and i broke 2 hubs and then tore the whole carrier assembly out of it all in one week.
