Best rear axle to use
I am going to get a 1980 Cherokee/Wagoneer dana 44 front axle today and was wondering should i also get the rear dana 44 in it? Would it bolt up to the s10 springs or could i use cherokee/wagoneer springs?

Re: Best rear axle to use
you can, but if i were you, i would get a new model rodeo or passport rear end. i believe you want a 93 and up. They got the dana 44 with 4.30 gears already and some have limited slip. I believe they also have disc brakes. Since you are probably going to have to regear the front it will probably be cheaper to find one of these. They also have the same bolt pattern for the wheels.

Re: Best rear axle to use
not to mention, that some of the waggy rear ends actually have an off-set rear which is something you truly want to avoid

Re: Best rear axle to use
I would suggest an explorer 8.8 with custom axles and redrilled drums, cheap and easy, huge axles ,rip off of chevy 12 bolt ,common junkyard find.bullet proof rearennd except for c-clips ,which can be eliminated.Right width to. The waggy amc 20 is almost as tough without having to deal with the bolt pattern, again almost a blatent rip off of the 12 bolt chevy.Depends alot on how hard you play and how much finese you have off road.

Re: Best rear axle to use
I would opt to use the D44 or AMC 20HD out of the waggy IF the diff wasn't offset. I used the D44 out of the waggy I got my front out of. when I regear, change seals, change carriers, ect I just order 2 of everything.

Re: Best rear axle to use
well, an isuzu axle should be able to be geared to lower than 4.88. i havent been able to find anywhere that sells the amc20 any lower, im guessing thats what your talking about b/c the front i found with hardly any searching to 5.38. You can use an earlier or later d 44. so thats what you can use, i guess. I personally would running lower than 4.88 with 41s.

Re: Best rear axle to use
i have ran 39.5 iroks with 4.88 and the speedo was still 5 mph fast. i don't think that 41's will be that much of a difference. unless you are pushing them with a 4 banger 4.88 puts you close to stock tire and gear ratio, but if you ever plan on going bigger.... might want to just look for a D44.

Re: Best rear axle to use
I do not care about the speedo. I care about how it pulls and gain speed on the road. I do not want it to be slugish.

Re: Best rear axle to use
I just picked up an 1996 gm 14 bolt eight lug out of a 2500. I was wondering can i use the 6 lug axle shaft out of an 14 bolt to replace the 8 lug shaft.

Re: Best rear axle to use
The bolt pattern on a FF 14 bolt has nothing to do with the axle shafts.

Re: Best rear axle to use
well i found a 14 bolt 6 lug but the 8 lug was already pulled so just got it for $75 dollars. I was just wondering if i could take the axle shafts out of the 14 bolt with 6 lug and put them in mine with no problem cause my fsj dana 44 has 6 lug.

Re: Best rear axle to use
No, there is nothing between the 10.5" FF 14 bolt and the SF 9.5" 14 bolt that will interchange except maybe the lugnuts.
