Isn't it
Am I gonna have to get degree shims to set my pinion angle on the front with this thing?? Im guessin I do cause that perch looks stationary Also it seems to be really wide for 2 1/2" springs. Could I run them safely?? |

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project
Im thinkin about it. At least with the money from the gears I'll be able to get my knuckles, new joints for the shafts, and 35 spline outers. But I dont know if thats even worth it. I'll probably be running the 44 for awhile, so I might just re-gear it. I don't know what the hell to do ![]() |

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project
The 14b is a good move imo. Be sure to shave it down some while ya have it out, it's much easy on the ground compared to being mounted on the truck.

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project
good buy, did you hear about them for sale or see a add on like craigslist? can't find a front dana 60 around here for under 800, at least from what i have seen. deff. glad i have car dollies and a engine hoist to move the 14 bolt i got for the blazer. as for not wanting to run anything bigger than 39's on a stock dana 60. im running my 44's on stock axles for my dana 60 and 44. of course its not a trail rig, but it has done fine in the snow and mud. i still am thinking about putting my 39.5's on my blazer but not sure yet. can't wait to see it with new axles and bigger tires man.

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project
Well today turned out to be a pretty good day. 1st I scored my 14 bolt for $100. Then I got a set of knuckles for $200. The knuckles were a little pricey but I didn't feel like waiting to get a pair shipped to me. I had a set lined up for $150, but calculate in the shipping and it would've been around that. Plus I needed the lower kingpin caps and they would've cost me another $80, but these knuckles came with them.
I started cleaning up the 14 bolt. Those cast perches were a BITCH. Even with the torch. Then I was cleaning up the rest of the melted perches and my grinder took a shit on me. I was grinding for about 20 mins straight and it just dogged down and started smokin like a motherfvcker. I knew I should've got the extended warranty I'll just get another one tomorrow and pay the couple extra bucks for the warranty. And then take the old one back, then I'll have 2 I forgot my camera. So no pics. But I'll get some tomorrow. |

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project
Yeah, i was gonna go with the 60, but Ive heard some horror stories about those. The 14 bolt, not so much. And yeah, its definitely gettin shaved. I think I'll take the porta-band to it and then finish it off with the grinder. Found the add on Pirate and the guy selling it only ended up being 15 mins away from me. And yeah, those 14 bolts are some heavy sum bitches. I almost blew a nut picking it up to put it on jack stands |

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project
The drums are gonna stay for now. I gotta save up for tires before I can go discs. Im gonna start ordering all my parts tomorrow, so HOPEFULLY I'll have the axles under the truck by the weekend.
Im ordering Rancho 44044's for the front. Then Im gonna take the main leaf (s-10) out of the front pack, get rid of teh F-150 main out of the rear pack, replace it with the s-10 main, and then flip em around so it moves the axle back 2.5". So my wheelbase will be stretched another 4.5" cause the 44044's will move me forward another 2" or so. Shouldn't have any problems fitting the 40's. Still gotta shave the 14 bolt. Thats gonna be fun At least the hard part is almost over. I HATE cleaning up axles. All the grinding, wire wheeling, dust, and painting So, updates in a few more days. |

wrekd whatcha runnin for a motor, tranny and transfer combo? I've got a 96 2dr blazer with athing stock 4.3 and stock 5 spd with hopefully a np241 transfer I was wondering if the tranny ie clutch would hold up to the abuse of runnin 36's off road im new to this off roading rock crawlin thing. circle track racing was to expensive and not enough drivin time mud racin so this is my new hobby.

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project
those front axle shafts look like the 'neck down' ones ? you can use them but that will a weak spot, you might look into the spicer shaft that are one size all the way across, you wont need the expensive chrome moly ,

make sure you get a heavy di coever for the back or a least some kind of gaurd,, the 14 bolts are strong and heavy as hell,, except for a paper thin cover. rocks will rip it open like an old Milwaukie beer can

I have a set of shafts from a newer 60 that are bigger round than these ones. Will those work?? Im guessing your talking about the inners?? Then all I would have to do is get the 35 spline outers. |

Wrekd are you steppin up to 40's ? This thing keeps getting bigger and bigger. Awesome. Next step....exocage or something to keep the roof off your head when you manage to flop this thing. At least with the exocage if you flop the truck your wheelin day wont be over. Just upright the truck and keep wheelin.

That sounded like something a politician would say .Anyway, I'm gonna try to build it so that it isn't in the way at all. I may even french it into the inside body structure if it looks feasible. |

Got the 14 bolt shaved tonight. Took the sawzall to it first and cut off about a 1" chunk. Then ground the shit out of it. Let me know what you guys think.

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project
Looks good, but I've seen way more taken off of them before. Consider the angle that the pinion is going to be at also, it looks like your taking it off square with the housing instead of the angle that you'll be mounting it in the truck. Look through Donahue's build thread also, he shaved a ton off of his.

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project
where the factory notches are cut out on the bottom (one on each side ) you can shave down flat form side to side, the notch is cut down to the flat area where you can make it that flat all the way across.
keep shaving,,, or grinding you are half way there |
