That's what I was afraid of. Mine is HEAVY and it will be in the rocks. I want to get a selectable locker for the front, but I don't want to spend the cash right now, so I was thinking about welding the spider gears up front for now.

Go for it. Its manageable. Just a PITA sometimes. IMO, the pros outweigh the cons.

Your going to be praying for it off road. It's still going to be a month or so before we rip out the hydro assist on my friend's junker. That'll buy you some time if your still interested.

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project

ARB is really the best way to go, a spool has no give want so ever, for the mud it might work, but you do realize how hard it is to turn when each wheel is going the same speed and they have do give , they want to go straight ahead !
detroits even have a little give to them, .
on the rocks are is the way to go, hydroo assist is a must , I ran it for years with out it, but now that I have had it for the last couple years , I dont know that I can live with out it .
the way to build a rig on a budget (we all have one ) you need to learn to do more your self, ( if you have skills ) do the disk brakes your self, make your own hydro, I have less than $200 in mine,

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project

I have it welded now. So it wont be any different with the spool. The terrain I wheel in is alot more forgiving then rocks, so its not too bad. Plus Im only running 36's.

Dave, just shoot me a PM with the price and I'll see what I can do when that time comes.

That sucks! And just to rub it in, those shafts cost you $170 more than I have in my D60, lol.

BTW, I think you were supposed to climb the rock, not the other way around.

I'll trade you my axles, shafts, and gears for your front 60

I made it up the rock, but then my truck slid over and picked that fvcker right up and into my fender. I only had 1 hub locked at the time cause we were just cruisin around the mountain. Then I pulled up on that and shit hit the fan.

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project

Well. JBG called me this morning to tell me the shafts are on back order for a month So I guess I'll hit up the local pick n pull for another stock shaft so I could wheel in the meantime.

What trucks can I pull an axle out of??? Is it just the 70's F-150's and Bronco's??? Or do the TTB ones work too??

If I didn't want mine to be a driver also it would have already got rockwells or portals, but they are just to low geared for street duties.

Yeah I dont think Rocks would be very good for street duties

I would love to put a set of Mogs or Portals under my truck (up to 50* of steering and crazy ground clearance), but they are fawkin expensive!!

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project

When I first tried going up it I only had 1 hub locked in. If I had both locked in from the start I wouldn't of had a problem. But I underestimated the little bit of mud combined with slippery leaves, and as soon as I spun it picked up that rock and I landed on my diff. We ended up having to winch the rock outta my fender so I could back out.

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project

Anyone know of any high amp alternators that would fit my truck?? Maybe off of a fullsize with a towing package. I know some of them get higher amp alternators installed from the factory. I dont wanna put the factory 105 amp alternator back in, but i really dont want to spend $300 on a aftermarket high amp one.

Or maybe i could get rid of my A/C setup and run dual alternators??? What would be involved in that wiring wise?? Im not worried about making brackets. Im gonna need some more juice for when I hook up my winch.

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project

Yea, just read that whole first post about it. You have to not only get the alternator but get a new belt too. I'm going to be doing this upgrade in a few weeks cause I have one of those "high output" BS alternators that I feel is almost worse than the stock alternator ever was.

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project

Well I got a new alternator. Its a 130amp one off of a Suburban with the 8.1, vs. the stock 105 amp one. I told him I needed one for a 2002 Tahoe but he said the Burb one was the same. Everything bolted right up. The plug was the same and everything. I got the belt it siad I needed in that thread, and when I came home to look up what it was for, it was the same belt for my truck. 96 Blazer 4.3 w/A/C. So I dont know if its gonna work. I'll try that tomorrow.

Heres a few comparison pics:

New one on bottom, stock one on top

Plug was the exact same

New one on left, stock one on right

New belt. Fvcker was $40. I hope it doesn't work so I could take it back and get a cheaper one. I didn't know Gatorback was top of the line. I coulda got a cheap belt for like $17

Re: 96 SFA Blazer project

I cancelled those chromo shafts too. They were Yukons and I didn't hear one good thing about them. People said they were breaking the Yukon stubs easier than the stock shafts So Im not wasting over $500 on those pieces of shit. Im trying to find some AlloyUSA shafts, but Im not having any luck so far.

So Im gonna grab some stock shafts from the j-yard tomorrow and continue my search for AlloyUSA's or save up a little more and get some Superiors w/CTM's.
