Re: 89 SFA buildup for rocks
Cool video.
We are heading to TSF (Tillamook State Forest) for father's day weekend (June 20,21) we'll probably also make runs there in July and Aug. Our www.poorboyoffroad.com annual Summer bash is @ Sand lake the first weekend in Aug, so the Aug. run will probably be the 3rd or 4th weekend. Let me know when you guys want to come up, we can meet up and show you around if you want. Josh |

Re: 89 SFA buildup for rocks
part of the reason it stalls is because the motor does not have quite enough torque at idle to idle over those rocks. the main thing the way it is now is to give it a little gas now and then do it doesnt die.

Re: 89 SFA buildup for rocks
the rock garden is basically this corridor of rocks that go a little ways up a hill side. the top is probably roughly 1/4 mile up, it kinda has terraces and steep spots. memorial day i made it to the last steep spot before the top when i broke a front axle shaft. this was by far the furthest that anyone in our group has made it, and i doubt anyone else has ever driven up here. the corridor is roughly 30-50 yards wide and the rocks seem to range from small to large from left to right. you basically get to pick your difficulty right now, but we have thought about marking out some "courses" or something similar to follow. i have driven my truck though parts of this when it was bone stock, street tires and all, and it will still challange any locked and doubled truck.
i broke my back window on memorial day weekend two years ago, and that promted the build of this truck. i made it about as far up as you can see from this pic another cool thing is that you can drive passenger cars right up to the entrance, where you see the trucks parked in this pic this particular site is one that one guy goes through, and everybody watches, then the next guy, etc. you basically go up, then come back down or exit on one of the sides. there are some big holes, and lots of contour on the ground the rocks are covering. its kinda hard to get the idea from the pics. this place is probably roughly a 3 hour drive from the portland area, its just over an hour east of eugene. if you guys wanted to come down, i'm sure i could round up some people that would want to do it whenever. you could also just come in a car and check it out before driving the trucks down. |

Re: 89 SFA buildup for rocks
Nice vids! Keep me informed as time gets closer and we'll meet up for a run with ya if that's ok. Can't believe you can actually steer that thing, during my testing last weekend I couldn't steer mine, it really needs the hydro assist installed, that's my project for this week.

Re: 89 SFA buildup for rocks
Haha, funny story. I was in NH today getting my new transfer case and the guy told me he was GOING to put a Ford D60 in his Blazer but he found a Chevy D60 in better condition so he bought that. He said he got BOTH (and a waggy D44) at this junk yard down the road where ANY axle is $50, the only stipulation is that you have to pull it yourself.

Re: 89 SFA buildup for rocks
yeah, it was the long side. people around here are too smart to go for the any axle $50 thing. the only think i can find right now from looking is a ball joint 60 from a 90's era truck and that wont even bolt up to my suspension the way it is.

I didn't actually go to the junk yard. The guy I got the transfer case from in Laconia told me about it. It's where he got his 9", Ford 60, Chevy 60, and a Waggy D44

Re: 89 SFA buildup for rocks
its way to big to be man made, it would be cost prohibitive. plus there is no point for why it would be made, i feel it must be natural.

Re: 89 SFA buildup for rocks
I posted up some pics of the rock garden on my web site, got alot of interest in going down there sometime this summer, we are just wondering exactly where it's at. We are big into wheeling legally so we need to find out if it's a legal wheelin spot or not. Someone guessed that it might be part of the Santiam Pass OhV area, is this true? Here is a link to the OHV area.
