Talking ZQ8_LQ4 build.....

Hi guys, I'm new here but have been lurking for a while so I thought I'd post a link to some pics of my ride I've been workin on.

http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/inde...lbumId=2135145

The truck is a 2001 4.3 currently. I added the complete ZQ8 suspension and steering package with new bilsteins. Brakes are the Blazer spindle with dual piston calipers. Wheels are ZR1 Grandsports 17x9.5 out front and 17x11 on the rear. Tires size 275/40/17 on the front and the rear 315/35/17.
I just installed blazer floor shifter and removed the column shifter parts.

I'm hoping to get the rest of the parts gathered over the next 2 months.

Engine is almost completed, its a (20k) 2002 LQ4 with LS6 intake, TR224 cam, and LS2 timing chain, MSD wires.

Still need tranny & converter, posi, harness, headers, car water pump, alternator bracket, C5 front brakes, blazer rear brakes, and of course all the little nickel dime stuff.

I've been painting on it little by little as time allows. Hoping to finish paintwork next spring after the engine is in.

Let me know what you guys think. any suggestions?

Thanks Derek

I found it in an old barn. It had been sitting for 5 years!!!! When I lifted the tarp off it there was a big @ss black snake sitting on the intake

Owner said it lost oil pressure completely. I'd say at that time it would have been an easy fix but now its had 5 years to get rust in the cylinder walls. Some dummy left the oil level sensor outta the pan

I sprayed pb blaster and oil into the spark plug holes and got the motor broke free. But I'd say it needs a drastic tear down. I'm thinkin 408

KJF95S-10 I just added you on myspace

Thanks guys for the kudos
I picked up most of the rear disk setup off of a blazer tonight. I'll get around to that swap later tho. I'm mainly interested in getting this motor in.

Re: ZQ8_LQ4 build.....

Been having lots of questions about my wheels and fitment. Here is the answer I've been giving everybody-

well there is more involved running this size then just spacers. I'm running a 2.25 inch spacers all around. I would suggest buying a 2.25 for the rear and a 2.5 on the front. I had to modify (notch) upper a-arm, cut the top off the steering stop(due to blazer brakes), and weld half inch extensions on the ends of the steering stops to keep the wheels from hitting the upper a-arm.

You can run HUGE tires out back, but if I knew what I know now. I would have run a 17x8 on the front instead, with a smaller tire, and the correct offset wheel(probably torque thrust2's). That would have also allowed me to run long tubes.....

I think with the 2.5 inch spacer on the front it will allow more room with less rubbing.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE how my truck looks and drives after I got it all lined out but it was kind of a PITA!!!!! I did loose a little turning radius but I now have zero issues with rubbing. Oh and if your budget doesn't allow for some expensive ass rear tires then you should most likely go with 9.5's all around. I'm running this exact wheel and tire combo on my camaro but they are polished and running drag radials. I did this with intentions of being able to switch wheels with car and truck when needed.

Believe it or not, my buddy had most of it in a crate just sittin in his garage attic!!! I bought the steering box new and the bilsteins new. He even had the 3rd shock! I still haven't got around to rounding up or making brackets for it yet tho..... all said and done I have less then 500 bux in the whole ZQ8 setup. minus the factory wheels of course.

The gm kit was discontinued a couple years ago.... hears a link to it tho-

Re: ZQ8_LQ4 build.....

The truck could use another inch or two of drop, but the rest looks great. You've got a great start going. It's good that you're starting with the suspension, steering, and little stuff first. Once you finish the engine you probably won't want to spend another dime on it.

I'm actually planning to lower it just a little more but I'm worried I'll make it to low and not be able to haul much. Let me be VERY clear about this when I say this will be my DAILY DRIVER, so this thing needs to be versatile. I plan on hauling anything and everything.

This truck replaced my dreams for a new camaro!!! LOL I didn't want that big ass payment so here I am working OT like crazy to pay for this thing outta pocket. I also needed a truck so I got the best of both worlds

Yup same wheels except your rears are 36mm offset and mine are 50mm offset (I prefer having the larger lip on the rear). Looks good man Are you still stock height?

Hey I know you!!! LOL I didn't know you were building a s10 too..... Hell stop by anytime you see me home. I don't have swap started yet but I'm getting the motor finished up and accumulating parts needed. Shouldn't take too much longer though. I've been buyin $hit like crazy.

I figured I'd be the only one in a 100 mile radius with a LSX S10

A 1-2" block on the rear will be cheap and won't change your hauling capabilities at all since your leaf springs don't change. You'll probably just need to cut out the bump stop brackets and install some shorter universal style bump stops straight to the frame.

You could probably also find some cheap drop spindles in the classified section or on ebay to drop the front 2".
Or, you could trim your ZQ8 springs for a little higher spring rate and additional drop (I wouldn't recommend doing this for more than an inch of drop though.)

It's not the hauling capability I'm worried about. The rear wheels are so large there is no way to tuck them(but they don't stick out). I'm worried the fender well lips will rub the tire if too much weight is in the bed or If I hit a large dip in the road. I was flying on a rough, curvy, hilly road tonight and not a bit of rubbing. I'm not gonna touch the height of it until the engine is in and I can see how it sits. (Fingers crossed) the engine will drop the front an additional inch, and I can just run a 1 inch block in the rear.

Tj Stop by anytime. I was out your way today but I had to get to Mason and didn't have extra time to stop and check out your ride. How much are you narrowing the frame? I'd try it without it narrowed first to see if it hooks up. If it does great if it doesn't then narrow it.

I think I'll be the only one in a 100 miles with a LT4 swap longer than you'll be the only one with a LSX swap. and BTW stay outta my garage attic and leave me spare parts alone!!!! Let me know if ya want me to order those emblems. I got those spacers for mounting the rear disc brakes to the your axle. Do you want me to drop them off at Gregs so you can pick them up?

Re: ZQ8_LQ4 build.....

Here's an updated pic. Engine is DONE!!!! TR224 cam is in, valve springs installed, painted, MSD wires, new gaskets, LS2 timing chain, LS6 intake, and L92 pump.

Still need alternator bracket for truck........can't seem to locate one they are kinda high on EBAY.

Hope to order poly motor mounts and headers soon. I'm gonna try to run the BRP mid-lengths and use the mounts from S10V8.com
I hope they'll work together........

I'll make the motor mounts if I have to. I'm not giving 500 bux for BRP's mount kit!!! LOL

What headers are you running that hit the oil cooler lines. I was really hoping to reuse the factory oil cooler..........

what heads are you running? I hope not the stock 317s with that cam, you'll want more compression then 9.5 to 1.

I think he's just gonna get rid of it. He thought I'd want it but I don't have any use for it. Give him a yell he'd sell it to ya.

I am just running the stock 317's for now. I seen a dyno of a Silverado and the cam I have and it made 380rwhp. I think that will be more than enough for my daily driver If I change them out later I'm gonna run some ported 243's. My main objective right now is to get it together. A half a point of compression really isn't going to make or break the engine combo.......

Re: ZQ8_LQ4 build.....

i guess, they will flow like 243s and you'll be able to run low grade fuel on them.

I have that cam and mildly ported 243s on my lq4 and i'm hoping to hit 400rwhp, but i'd be happy with 380.

you should be 400-425rwhp with that combo As long as you get a GOOD tune..... The tuning is the only thing that has me worried. My Camaro has been a tuning nightmare for the last 10 years.....I've invested Thousands

I'm hoping to find a better tuner now that I'm messin with LS based engines. I could never find a good tuner for an LT1-4 engines. They just seemed to do a WOT tune and run with the money. My car still isn't right

Re: ZQ8_LQ4 build.....

I'm about to order a Magnaflow Muffler Dual 3 inch inlet and Dual 3inch outlet with the X pipe built inside it.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-12599/

I need to know if there is room for 3 inch tail pipes and still keep the spare tire? I did a search but didn't come up with anyone running 3" duals from the header back.

I've seen a cut-away of that muffler and it has a perforated internal X-pipe that is straight through design. It has packing around the perforated tubing. I also like the fact its stainless. I have a feeling it will be fairly loud but not obnoxious. Every Magnaflow I've ever heard hasn't been real loud.

I still need to hear from someone who's run 3 inch duals. Anybody???

Re: ZQ8_LQ4 build.....

i'm running 2.5 duals, but if you had a good shop do it, or if you do it and take your time you will have room. I wouldnt run 3in duals though, its a bit overkill imo. my buddy ran dual 3s on his ls1 and hated it. what headers are you running again?

I'm gonna run the BRP midlength's. I've always loved deep sound of larger exhaust. But then again this is my first gen 3 engine so maybe it won't sound as good?????? Perhaps 2 and a half would be fine. Easier to route thats for sure. Was your buddy runnin a f-body? If he was I bet he had it dumped under the car. I don't like that either. To loud, Fumes, and drag on everything.
