Well teardown has started...

It's finally cooling down here in AZ, so I decided to start tearing down the Typhoon getting it ready for the V8. Looks pretty tired at 130k miles, but it actually ran great. Sorry the pics were blurry, I didn't have my flash on and it was getting dark.

Can you spot the turbo??

And here it is buttoned up for the night

I'll get some more done this weekend and hopefully have the engine pulled by next weekend.

Re: Well teardown has started...

those 4.3's with the turbo's really weren't any different internally than say the N/A were they? I mean you just running 10 lbs of boost give or take.

they had stronger main caps, and lower compression. The oilpan has provisions for the turbo oil drain......other than that....not much is different. The stock trucks run 15 psi, not 10. At the time I switched turbos, I was running 26 psi on the stock turbo.

Yeah I plan to take a lot of pictures. I've also been keeping a "diary" of my efforts keeping tabs on what I buy........why I buy it........how much it has cost me total, etc.

Here is a link to that thread:

http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=52967

I'll be posting pictuers here too, but the most detail will be in that thread linked above.

Yeah I'm up for that. Once done, I'm probably going to have it at the local car show up at the Pavilions a lot.

You and me both! When are you hoping to be finished by? We need to meet at the Pav's and go park in the middle of the vette section. If anyone says for us to leave we'll just say "But it's got the same motor!....."

I'm hoping to be finished by the end of the year. I'm working on selling all of my old parts. I already sold the downpipe and turbo. I'm going to beadblast my intake manifolds this week and sell them along with the exhaust manifolds for that person who wants a turbo 4.3. Once those are sold, I'm probably going to be giving away the short block, then I'll purchase the motor, maybe even the 4L80E too. I just need to sell this stuff first. I'm running out of room.

Hah, tell me about. I've got so much crap spread all over my dad's driveway, garage, and backyard.

So are you gonna go with the NA 5.3 set-up for awhile then eventually turbo it or are you selling your current turbo and buying a different one?

Good call on the 4l80E too. I know my 4L60 is gonna need to be built once this truck really gets some power. That 4L80E should take everything you throw at it. You gonna put a stall in it while it is down too or just keeping the stock stall speed?

I'm going to run a new turbo. Probably a TC76 or GTK-1000 from Turbonetics. I'm not sure yet. Still waiting to decide depending on if I get a 5.3 or 6.0.

More than likely, I'll end up with a 3000 stall when I do the 80E

Re: Well teardown has started...

Ok, made some more progress today.

Here are the pics so far.

I just had taken the engine out........hell of a job by yourself and trying to get a cherry picker to roll on grass......not easy. This was a few days ago:

At the end of today, I was able to get the transmission and transfer case pulled. I also got the rest of the harness out, the A/C box pulled off, tranny crossmember pulled, and other misc. things I just set the plastic engine in the engine bay for storage overnight, but it also gives me inspiration to keep going:

Next step is cleaning of course, making a plate for the firewall to cover the A/C / blower box holes, painting the firewall and frame. That should start this weekend.

Re: Well teardown has started...

Not much more to report other than I got the engine where the truck is yesterday. (hell of a job moving an engine all by yourself through dirt and grass)

Also my shipment of LS2 accessory brackets came in yesterday too:

Re: Well teardown has started...

Started getting the truck cleaned up today. I washed off the firewall and uncovered a lot of rust. I was able to get the motor mounts bolted into the truck today. It was pretty slow going today as I didn't have much time before dark. I was also able to get the truck intake off and set my LS1 intake on there. My LS6 intake is still sitting in the box and I'll keep it there until I have to get it out.

psst you missed a spot on the lower shock passenger side!! Don't worry I won't tell. Looks good now put the damn motor in already. Or if you get bored take a pick of the motor and that sweet pan you got. I am interested in tolerences. I was just lookin at the dim. of your pan and that one I got. I think life will be good. But as we know in the custom think and know are too different things.

Yeah I wasn't too worried about that considering I'm going to swap out and get coilovers anyways.

Nope, that will be trial and error, but only after I get the motor in there. It's obviously going to be custom on the turbo side, but hopefully I can use some sort of stock LSx manifold turned around on the driver's side, and then just fab up a crossover.
