Vehicle Insurance???

How did you go about informing your insurance company that your 4 or 6 cylinder turned into 8? That is if you did inform them. Also did your premium go up??

Re: Vehicle Insurance???

they go by Vin #, tells them everything they want to know. They only ask if you have a turbocharger or nitrous. (i didnt tell them about my turbo)

If you want full coverage, and want to be covered, you'd have to get your truck appraised.

Re: Vehicle Insurance???

i told my insurance about my engine . sent them copys of my reciepts and estimates of my s10 and the build. of cousre from 50 dollars for full coverage on my s10 it went up to 125.(6k in extras). If my truck gets stolen or catches fire or what not, i get everything i invested into my s10 plus the cost of my truck. That way i dont have to worry about it sitting in my drive way and not having to put it in my garage every nite or if some non insured motorist totales my truck.

Re: Vehicle Insurance???

You can add an endorsement to your policy that accounts for your customizations. They normally want receipts and a total cost of alterations. Cost is minimal in most cases.

Re: Vehicle Insurance???

Most insurance places dont like these type of trucks, Ive have three of them now. There is a thing called "Declared Value" which is basically what full coverage covers. Its a value that depreciates with time, and is basically a market value that the insurance company deems your vehicle to be worth.

Then there is "Agreed Value" and is used by specialty hot rod insurance companies, where you send them ALL your information about modifications and such. Then you and the insurance company agree on a value of your vehicle if it were to be wreck. It determines the check that they would cut you.

I personally go with Hagerty Insureance. Youve probably seen it if you watch the Barett Jackson auctions, or any other car auction shows. They only offer insurance to Classic vehicles(older than any S-10) and "Exotic vehicles. There is also a place called Grundy insurance, that is a speciatly vehicle insurance company like Hagerty

Exotic vehicles to them are Lamborghinis, Ferraris, etc. My truck didnt qualify as a classic since it wasnt old enough, but they did deem it eligible for an exotic.

There are certain rules that specialty insureance require;

For Hagerty:You MUST send proof of insurance of another "daily driver" vehicle. They ask you all kinds of questions about when and how you drive and how many miles a year, they dont want you driving it like 7000 miles a year. They also will drop you immediatly if you even whisper the word nitrous. If you crash and there is any nitrous equipment on your truck, even if there isnt a bottle present, they will disclaim and you get ZIPPO!!!

For Grundy: It was less strict, there are no mileage limitations. I also specifically talked to thier underwriters about nitrous and they said there was no exclusion for nitrous. The reason I didnt go with them was when I read the fine print it implied they would disclaim if you were driving to, or from work, or out on an errand. ALthough I dont know how they would prove it, but I wasnt going to risk it. The cost of both places was close, grundy was like $50/yr cheaper IIRC.

In the end Ive covered my truck for something like 16k through Hagerty, and need to update our "Agreed Value" since I put about $3000-4000 in upgrades since then, which will make my premiums go up slightly. But right now my insureance its $450(ish) a year for an "Agreed value" of 16k. So if some jerk smashes into my truck, I get enough money to replace it, and not $2500 for a '99 S-10

Re: Vehicle Insurance???

Provide your insurance company with a list of the modifications. You don't need to go into each part.

Failure to do this could result in a denial of claim service. If you are in a vehicle accident and you have misrepresented your vehicle to your insurance company, there is a very good chance that this could occur.

If you injure or kill someone, you will not have any insurance.

It's best to be up front. If they won't insure you, go to another company or as for a supervisor.

My insurance company is fully aware of the mods and how much I've spent on each of my projects and I am fully covered.

Re: Vehicle Insurance???

I'm with stae farm and I asked what I would need to do if and when I do an engine swap. They told me that all I needed to do was keep receipts for everything or I could do a "specialty" vehicle and they basically would itemize the mods and determine an "agreed value." Just talk to your insurer before going with some more exspensive specialized insurance.
