Valvetrain Upgrade

I was wondering if this would be a good route to go for the valvetrain in my now stock 5.3

Cam
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...=CCA-54-414-11

Other
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku

I will be running a LS1 intake and LS1 TB 2002 5.3

Will the stock valvetrain hold up or should I definately strengthen it?

Re: Valvetrain Upgrade

I might not get the lifters, but the cam is a great choice and the pushrods and springs are also very good.

Re: Valvetrain Upgrade

and another question... for the front drive accessories, I have nothing. Is it really like $800 for a whole new assembly?

Re: Valvetrain Upgrade

I would suggest using the LS7 lifters. they are like $125 through a GM dealership. I used them in my motor. are a nice upgrade for cheap. I have heard some bad things about the comp lifters.

There isnt anything wrong with Comps lifters, or they would fix it.

To change the lifters you have to take off the heads which has the extra cost of head gaskets. The stock lifters work fine as long as they are in good shape.

Re: Valvetrain Upgrade

Sweets10v8 - what lifters would you recommend with an lq4 and l92 heads? I plan on running factory valves for the time being.

Just like there valve springs that they fixed once that still break.

Im sure the lifters are a nice piece, just have heard too many negatives about them. thats why i went with a GM part. Used comp pushrods though, they are a very nice piece.

Re: Valvetrain Upgrade

I already took the heads off because honestly it looked like the engine had more than 40k (grease, build-up, etc) and when I pulled the intake it looked like oil absorbent pellets under there... but when I pulled the heads the cylinders still had nice hones and there was no ridge... clean valves, good oiling, etc. In the end it would have been okay but I would rather not risk it.
I already have a set of nice head gaskets that I bought back when I had my 6.0 so no extra cost really... But if the stock lifters will work fine I dont really wanna shell out another $100 on top of the thousands it will be in the end.

Another question, how do you remove the lifter galley/knock sensor pan... I removed the bolts but feels like something is holding it and I don't want to pry or anything without knowing?

Did you remove the knock sensors? Sorry may be a dumb question but once they as well as all the valley cover bolts are out you can go ahead and lift it off. There are rubbers that seal at the knock sensor "stand" that will create the resistance your speaking about. It will slide straight up and off but might need a little prying.

x20.

Keep your stock rockers, and your probably going to need to have custom length pushrods, I wouldnt buy pushrods unless I checked the length first, on anything.

That camshaft is OK it all depends on what your doing.

Re: Valvetrain Upgrade

Yeah I pulled the knock sensors... I'll give it a little prying assistance if I ever get a day off.
