Project: rebuilding my first truck

Going to start a thread to keep track of everything.
This truck is where my car abdication came from. Bought it 100% when I was 17. Did all the mods myself, screwed up a lot and learned a lot.

It's been 10 years since I sold it. Long story short I found it in WI about 7 hours away. Lucky I had a friend up there that lived close and went and bought the truck for me until I could go pick it up.

Plans are full build, everything will need attention. The winters and last owner were not the kindest to the old truck. I plan on fixing everything.

I'll edit with all the details later.

Re: Project: rebuilding my first truck

So the plan.
I parted out the Camaro I built earlier in the year to use most of the drive line in my truck.

Car I parted

Truck will have a lq4 6.0, 4l80e, 9" turbo (either the pt88 I have currently or get some Borg s366 twins). Air to water. Full ac, power everything. 0411 ECM, 3 bar os using hp tuners. Going to swap to a 15/17 wheel combo, 6 piston front calipers, coil overs front and rear, mono leafs/cal trac out back I'm sure there is more I'm forgetting.

Can I ask what you paid to buy it back? Looks like a neat truck, and your Camaro sounds like it was stout!

A little over $1,000.
Truck was running driving 4.3 auto. Power windows and locks, everything including ac worked. It has 150k on it and when I sold it 10 years ago it almost had 120k. So it's sat around a lot lol

The Camaro was great. Went 10.03 @134 on the first track outting on 11ish psi. So I have high hopes for the truck.

Sorry, wasn't real clear on that one lol.
17" front runners with z06 6piston calipers.
15" rears, haven't decided on brakes on the rear yet. Still have to explore some budget options for a 9"

17" front runners with 6piston calipers sounds like that could be potentially dangerous, but you don't sound like your a newb.

Re: Project: rebuilding my first truck

You don't have too much brake with the 6 pistons and skinnys? I would be a little afraid they would lock up real easy with that much brake up front, and such a small tire.

Ever driven/seen/ridden in a c6 z06 with a drag pack? They don't really have issues with it. I'm sure if brake biased isn't set up correctly there could be issues in a panic braking situation. This truck isn't going to be a daily, just a very fun (and hopfully fast) street toy with an option for ac lol.

I've seen them. They have a really nice ABS setup on them though. I am sure it's fine once your use to it, kind of like most other things.

That Holley pan, is worth every penny IMO as far as the fit goes! Nice pile of stuff there!

Re: Project: rebuilding my first truck

Well I was out cleaning the garage and one thing led to another and ended up dropping the motor in.
I will say that I'll be investing in one of the lift plates for the valley cover. My chain was went from one side to another and I fought getting it straight for over an hour back and forth (4l80e is in there too).

Had to slide the motor mounts in the forward position to get it in. I'll be clearancing some places and sliding the motor back before I build the turbo kit. Making a to do list of everything I need to mock up while the motor is in. Then I'll pull it back out. Clean/paint everything and reassemble, hopfully only installing the motor one more time lol.

One thing in changing ASAP is the brake booster. Going to a hydro boost set up for sure. That booster was pissing me off the entire time! Lol

Also going to look into smaller steering shaft mods.

I sold my turbo kit today off my Camaro. Guy didn't want the turbo or gate so instead of twins I'm going to run the pt88 I already have. It should still be good to 900ish on full tilt. Biggest thing is I think going single it will allow for a front mount a LOT easier then twins.
Still shopping for an a/w intercooler also. Thinking about hiding it of to one side of the frame rail and exiting up where the factory air box would be.

Yep. It's alreay hooked up to the motor in the truck lol.
Figure the pt88 combo was all matched, turbo/stall/cam all work very well together so it should rip.

I've got 99% of all the tubing, bends and flanges on the way. I went ahead and order stuff for a 4" down pipe....but I'm not holding my breath on that fitting anywhere. But I have to try, worst case I'll down to a 3.5" or 3" if absolutely have to.

Now I just need to get the front end stuff back on so I can get started on the fun stuff and plan the cold side figured out eventually

Re: Project: rebuilding my first truck

Well seeing this all together is smashing any hope I had of running the exhaust out the back. Lol. Think I'm going turbo the turbo around so the down pipe will exit towards the passenger side and dump it under the truck some where.

Re: Project: rebuilding my first truck

Tossed the core support in just to have a look.

After holding the turbo in different places to see where I like it I've determined that there is no good place without major modification lol.
Trying to keep everything in mind, plug changes, remote mounted coil packs, a/w intercooler placement, running the charge pipe through/under the core support, keep the turbo high enough so no drain is needed, waste gate routing (which is going to suck).

Re: Project: rebuilding my first truck

So I think this is going to be rough turbo placement. (Hard to hold it and look at everything lol)
Going to build two log manifolds, cross over passenger side tight to the motor into the t4 flange. Driver side is going to be pretty short but I think I can manage to make the bend.
Gate placement is going to be tough. It def won't be the most optimal, but I think I'll be able to make it work pretty well. If possible I would like to route it back into the down pipe.
Down pipe is going to pretty much dump under the truck with a turn down. Unless I come up with anything else that allows me to run full exhaust.

Plan 1 for cold side:
Cold side will go down, notch the bottom of the frame rail and run the charge pipe straight across to passenger side. Same notch on the passenger side then up into the a/w intercooler up against the core support. The manage to sneak the 3" pipe around the ac lines and coolant lines to the throttle body.

Plan 2 for cold side:
Straight down into biggest a/w intercooler I can fit then exit towards passenger side. Stop and go under core support back and up between fans and motor then into throttle body. Obviously this depends on clearance of the fans and what not. Either way, the cold side will be the last thing to be built so it this all might change lol. But these are initial thoughts.

Moved some pics because they got removed.

After getting the 2" sch10 pipe I was going to use for the log I'm even more concerned about it fitting. Might end up building more of a traditional header for the driver side to snake around the steering shaft. Talking to a few fab shops/friends to get some ideas. Also trying to figure out where the a/w is going to go.

Continuing mock up of everything that's going to be in the way of the turbo stuff.
Starting to wonder about fitting that 4" down pipe in there with my fans... Also messing around with flipping the turbo and coming inward and tipped out...I'm not sure what the hell im going to do yet lol.

Re: Project: rebuilding my first truck

I say look at lots of builds, and get some ideas from them. I can send you links, if you pm me. I have only seen 1 front mount in a S10, that was on the drivers side. It gets really tight over there, especially if you want to run a downpipe under the truck and out.

Since you have a high mount a/c setup, if you mount the turbo on the passenger side, you will have to get creative with the downpipe, and heat wrap some things, but it can be done, as I have seen pics.

If you can, post up a pic of the driver side accessories, and how they fit on the front of the block. I am curious on that clearance you have up by the steering shaft/box/accessories. I know the stock truck stuff has decent clearance for a hot side to fit by.

Thanks, I've already searched and saved just about every pic/build thread I could find. Agreed most are on the passenger side.
Things I have to work around on the passenger side:
Both upper and lower hoses
Ac compressor and lines
Coolant over flow (would like to keep stock with ECM mounted)

Driver side:
Header clearance and the steering Shaft/box

Either way it's going to be tight as heck. In my eyes staying away from the ac components and rad hoses is going to be worth it. If rather not run the down pipe between the rad hoses and there is no way possible I'm fitting a 4" down pipe on top of the frame/under hvac box on the passenger side out.

Here is the only pic I have of the drivers side. Just doesn't have the alt on it. You get the idea tho.

This is a 4" pipe. The fans I have a pretty dang slim. So if I can make a new lower profile shroud I think I can fit them and keep the 4" down pipe. It will just dump under the truck.

I just keep looking at this (not mine!) and think there is no way a turbo will go there.

Re: Project: rebuilding my first truck

This is the reason I chose to go low mount on the a/c. With it tucked tight down and low, (of course, you have to notch), it provides room for a turbo, and piping. I agree, I don't see it fitting like that.

Radiator/condenser are the set up from current performance. Fans will either be from a contour or might look at a very large single with a low profile shroud. All depends how I decide to route the down pipe.

Re: Project: rebuilding my first truck

Well been kind of slow lately. I dropped the trans crossmember off to be modified. Built/tacked the passenger side header together and dropped it off to have a buddy tig it together.

starting to look at coldside stuff. Thinking about this intercooler:
http://www.frozenboost.com/air_water...d9bc2b7a1b52c4

I'm sure there are better options but I think I ca fit it behind the bumper and not block the air flow to the radiator

My frozen boost intercooler has worked well for me. If you aren't sure if it will fit or not try mocking it up with cardboard. I went thru a couple of different types before I found one that fit my set up.

Yep, doing that tomorrow just to make sure!
I've read your build thread over and over while trying to decide to go rear mounted or make it fit up front lol

Re: Project: rebuilding my first truck

If I were to build another DD turbo truck, I would do a single T4 where the battery is supposed to sit. There is a lot of room there. Yes, you lose your top mount AC but there are plenty of guys notching the frame and mounting it down low. I was set on twins, and didnt want to lose ABS or fender wells to do them in the engine bay.

I have to agree 100% with you, but you did an AMAZING job fitting those twins down like you did! Your entire truck looks fantastic and very clean!

Re: Project: rebuilding my first truck

Well it's been very slow moving. Mocked up the passenger side manifold and had a buddy tig it up for me.
Also modified the Trans cross member, not the nicest part around but will get the job done. Basically cut the center out of it and moved it back 7". Still using the front set of holes...because I didn't realize there was a rear set in the frame already lol. It will get redone down the road.

Going to get it set in place tomorrow and see what happens. Hopfully it comes together. You can see a few keep shafts I'm modifying before I start on the driver side.

Also picked up a used a/w frozen boost intercooler. Should here next week I guess.

Re: Project: rebuilding my first truck

Well gonn be a short delay for a bit, gotta have some minor surgery so it will keep me from working on the truck for a few weeks it sounds like.

In the mean time got my Trans cross member done. Yes it's heavy, and I'm sure there's a better way to do it but it works great so for now it's staying since it was made from scrap we already had. Lol

Now that the Trans is mounted for sure next step will be the drivers log manifold, once that's done the hit side and cold side show move a lot faster.

Re: Project: rebuilding my first truck

Still recovering from surgery so can't do a lot on the truck. I've been making a plan in the mean time so hopfully it will go quick once the turbo kit is mocked up.

Ordered all the intercooler piping and couplers.

Biggest thing I'm struggling with is deciding what to do with the frame. Obviously it's not in great shape. Was planning on having it sandblasted but open to other options. Just hear so many good and bad things about por15, chassis saver, implement paint, east wood system and so on. I only want to do it once lol. Doesn't have to be perfect but I'd hate for it to chip off next year.

Front suspension:
Speedway upper control arms
Stock lowers
Tall upper/lower ball joints
Viking coil overs
Zq8 sway bar (might remove depending on how it hooks)
Reuse the beltech drop spindles that are on it
4 piston brembo brakes/ ss Camaro rotors

Rear:
8.8" rebuilt with girdle cover red rolled axles for now
Caltracs
Mono leaf 2" drop
Adjustable shocks (probably Viking)
15x10 wheel

Love your build. I documented my original swap in my build thread but haven't posted anything about my turbo build. Here is a video showing my set up. I'm using the same intercooler.

Thanks. It's gonna be a long road but I'll be happy when it's down to a bare frame at this point lol. You shared some pics on Facebook I saved, I plan on mounting the intercooler in the same general location. Doesn't looks like it will block air flow at all that low.

Re: Project: rebuilding my first truck

It's not pretty but it's a start to the pain in the ass drivers side log. I decided to remove abs and just do a proportioning valve and throw a line lock in while I'm there. The same setup seem to work great on the last car.
I'm just tacking everything together and having a good friend tig it up for me. Paying a fab shop isn't in the budget but I think it will work fine for what I'm doing.
