Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

Not much of an update. But I did order my bearings today along with a port and polishing kit from Summit...

And...

Disassembled the other head...

Are you going to port your own heads?

i thought the "truck heads" on the 5.3 were good sized as it is. I've been told they're bigger then the ls1 ans ls2 heads(port wise).

well i don't plan on going all out on porting them, i plan on basically port matching the intake and exhaust gaskets to the heads.

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

Got some updates.

Bearings came in the other day...

And spent 4 hours on one cylinder porting and polishing it. Yeah I know its a risky thing to do but I want to give it a try. And my mentor is helping with some tips...

Should get my pistons in this coming week, I'll get the block honed then have my machine shop put the block in an acid bath just to make sure the oil passages are clean. I'll also have them put the cam bearings in as well along with getting the crank polished.

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

mopowa you can really get some power shaping up those valve stem bosses and opening up the exhaust. the only problem area is on the intake side wall you can get into the rocker stud hole if you get too big. here some pics of what i did with mine. clement racings lead head porter walked me through one intake and one exhaust and i did the rest them he did the valve job after so thats why my seats are rusty, they hadnt been machined in the pics.

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

right. need to straighten out the short side of the exhaust (bottom.) and smooth out the bowl transitions. and port to intake transitions. then add about 30 lb boost!

yeah. right now i've been focusing on just smoothing the walls of the runners. after i get them all smoothened out i'll work on actually "porting and polishing"

i'm just worried that i'll get carried away and remove too much so i'm trying to train my self on some junk heads i picked up.

And I know it sounds cheesy, but the the heads do look a lot better in person then in this picture. I still have a bit more work to do on getting it polished and maybe a bit more porting but they look quite good...

Lookin good!

Im gettin ready to do a bored 5.3 swap in a Blazer if the pieces fall in place.

On the 5.3 heads theyre strong points are good flowing exhaust runners and small chambers, at least thats what I was told. Somethin to keep in mind while you port em.

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

Those ports look really good, I'd leave them right there, less is better with head porting from what i've heard, but from what I see you already know more than me just by looking at the work on those. The turn into the chamber looks really good not too much done but just enough!

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

thanks guys.

well, mistake on my part, I ended up ordering the wrong size rings so I got to get them exchanged for a different set. small set back so I most likely wont be able to get started on assembling the short block this weekend. all is good though, should get the old cam bearings out and block at least honed this weekend...

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

It's a good time to mock up your shortblock and check your bearing tolerances. It's teadeous work but worth the peace of mind later on. You could also smooth out the block by grinding away casting flash or other imperfections. Little details payoff by not causing problems down the road. Looks good keep up the good work

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

If I can get my cam bearings pulled and the new ones installed along with getting my crank polished, I was going to try and get all the tolerances checked this weekend. Yeah I was planning on getting the grind those imperfections from casting as well. I know you'll never see the detail of that but its my goal to make this a clean build inside and out.

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

how are the prices of bearings down there? i have a 6.0L to build and the bearings are killer expensive. the gasket set is even worse!

well worth it though, did you have anything done to the crank?

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

it was about $180 for the bearings. the rod and cam bearing were about $25.00 and the mains $80 all through summit. gasket sets are ridiculous here too.

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

Ok, quick question. I was looking at the bearing clearances on LS1Tech.com and it says 0.0006-0.003" for the connecting rods and 0.0007-0.00212" for the crank mains for LS1/LS6's. Are they the same for a 5.3? I haven't gotten the chance to go out and get a Chilton for a 5.3...
