Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

I must say i'm really impressed with your build project, i'm on the fence of a 5.3 or a ls2(yeah i know ls2 pwnts all ) but the 5.3 is very cost effective and can still make great power. Good luck and hope it works as well as it looks!

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

LS2? That's still not a bad deal. I've seen some on ebay for like $1,500+ with fairly low miles, tranny and harness.

The one he was referring to is probably a iron block not a aluminum....

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

$850 just for an 6.0 LQ9 from a Silverado or whatever. LS1's at the same place sold for $850 so I'm guessing $1200 or more if they even had an LS2.

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

LQ9s are bloated in pricing, yards put quite a premium on them compared to the LQ4s. unfortunately the only "cheap" LQ4s i find by me are early 99-00 engines...newer engines are still around 1k at least

Depending on pricing i guess it would be wise to look into the 5.3, sorry OP for throwing the topic off course.

I also got a question, anybody have some tips on how to get a bolt with a broken head out of a head? One of the manifold bolts broke during disassembly

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

the heads? no. going to leave them like they are.

since you rebuild those heads Frank, you know what the intake and exhaust valve sizes are and length are on those 862 heads? I'm to lazy to go out and take the head off and measure them lol.

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

that bolt will come out easily. use two hammers, position one against the bolt and smack it with the other. once you do that it should turn out fairly easy with some vice grips or channel locks. if it doesnt turn easy, try hitting it a bit harder

valve sizes are 1.900 and 1.550. not sure on the length, i never measure that lol

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

i had the same thing happen in my stock heads and when i was still going to use them. i got one out and the other one was stuck good so i took it to the machine shop and they got it out and had to repair the threads. It was only like $20 which was worth it since i was loosing my mind over the deal.

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

If your looking for stock displacement 5.3 you could use stock 4.8 pistons to get the compression bumped up that's what gm did with there ho5.3
Are you planning on reving this motor very high? If you are I'd recomend changing the rods the truck rods arnt even as strong as the stock 5.7 rods.

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

Dogger, thanks for the info, I'm ordering parts right now so I'll look into some 4.8 pistons. Going to forged I-Beam rods...

Also, started work on tearing the heads down...

are you kidding? the rods are the same
theyre the same in the 5.3, 5.7, and 6.0 (LQ4, not LQ9)

not only that the stock rods will handle over 6000rpm reliably with some rod bolts

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

Thanks for clearing that up Frank.

Anyone know if these pistons are good? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/STL-H856CP/ ... well, Federal Mogul, they any good? I've made my mind up on just running Hypereutectic Pistons, just trying to decide on what brand.

FD/Sealed Power is good for low budget/stock rebuild....I don't see any problems with them....But of course you could buy my 4.000 Bore boost pistons and go with a Big Turbo!!!!

Yeah, I believe I'll be going with the FM pistons. Priced out most of the parts I need for the rebuild excluding some things and I'm already up to $1k...

All well, its gonna be worth it

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

we use those pistons quite often... there good, only thing i would say is that if your building something for racing or higher rpm that they need to be balanced. im sure they will be great for your build!

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build

Thanks SoLowXtreme.

XDime99, Picked the valve spring compressor up from Autozone for $20.00, had to put it in the vice to squeeze the part that sits on the retainer cause it didn't fit very well.
