[Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build
Well the time has come for a little upgrade in the power department. It's my Senior Year in Highschool and all seniors must do a "Senior Project" on any topic they wish. So for mine, I plan to conquer the V8 swap! Whoo!
Let me warn everyone, its going to be a slow going project... I would like to do some performance upgrades as well so anyways, onwards to the pics! The engine is a 5.3 from a 02 Suburban with 120k on the clock, and only spent $350 on it! Here she is! ![]() ![]() ![]() 120,000 miles on it... I wonder how clean it is inside... ![]() Starting the tear down. ![]() ![]() I don't know... doesn't look to good... ![]() Clean looking valley. ![]() 120k on those heads... and also they are the 862 heads. ![]() ![]() Just a little snug... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Parts... ![]() All in all, top end looks really clean. I'm pretty sure someone has been in it before because the cylinder walls still have a cross hatching from a honing and I don't think that would have survived after 120k on the clock. Bottom end should be torn down tomorrow. |

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build
Looks good man....You'll want to turn it into a fire breathing dragon before it's over...My idea was to just swap a normal 6.0/LS2 into mine and it's turned into something i never thought I do to a S10.....

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build
Love seeing threads like this...gets me excited for when I do my build! Just wish I could find a 5.3 with all the stuff you found yours with for $350...around here a motor like that with those miles on it would go for like $800 or more! The reason I havent bought a motor yet!

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build
Yeah, rods I'll reuse, not the pistons though, going to use flat top pistons to help bump the compression up some.
I also checked the bore on the motor and it still standard at 3.780 ![]() |

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build
yeah man, its how i learn the best is by pictures. and one reason for a ton of detail pics is because i also have to make a presentation and journal for my senior project so trust me ill have alot of detail pics of the build. lol i suppose i should added beware 56k on the title...

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build
does anyone even have 56K these days? haha. Im really looking forward to seeing this. Ive always wanted to see all the detail things required to do a swap. The main things are obvious(headers, engine mounts, etc) but its all the other things that Im curious and excited to see. good luck!

Lol my 80 year old grandparents don't even have 56k! But I'll make sure I can get good detail for you and others of the build and swap. Which I'm hoping will happen this Christmas break.

Re: [Project] MoPowa - 5.3 Build
well at least we can see the s10 specific things like xtuckin22's was talking about. seeing how to adapt a v8 to the s10 engine bay is a very useful thing on this forum. |

You couldn't bore a 5.3 block to a 427. Unless you resleeved it. It would be nice though.
