Re: Project "Darkhorse" Spy Photo's!!!! **56K beware**

Are you guys using HP tuners? I am getting the predator (I know kinda outdated but I want something that is easy) diablosport from Jerad. I have always heard that these engines can do a lot more in terms of adding fuel at certain powerbands. Do you have aftermarket injectors? I was thinking of running stock till I upgrade the fuel pump. I was also wanting to get an LS6 intake for the LS1 would you guys recommend an aftermarket one over the LS6?

................on another note got the engine torn down today........next week it goes in for some ARP bolts and clevite bearings.......... had some brown (kinda like chocolate milk) gunk in the bottom of the pan........should I be concerned?

Thanks you guys are awesome and area a TRUE inspiration for me to get this thing in by this fall.

Yes Bucket and I are using HP tuners. But the preditor from Jared is what I usually recommend to any swapper, see the key thing here is there are so many tables and values that can be changed that the preditor tuner will keep you from hurting yourself. I would recommend getting a wideband and reporting the fuel readings to Jared, he can make adjustments from there.

Chocolate milk type junk is usually a sign of water in the oil. It is some cause for concern but if the engine was rained on or somthing in the junkyard it could cause a similar issue. Did you remove the heads or anything like that???

As far as the intake goes, The LS6 is your best budget bet for a performance intake. I have had very good success with the BBK SSI intake and I will soon be running the FAST 90MM with a Nick Williams 90MM throttle body

Re: Project "Darkhorse" Spy Photo's!!!! **56K beware**

yep hptuners, and I am new to it. I have talked with Black about it and soon It will be my number 1 project. currently I am doing body mods. (I will share those later) as far as I am concerned. I will not touch anything else motor wise, untill I get a good handle on how to get the most out of every mod with tuning.

that said I have a 4dr (grocery getter) lsx swap in the future.

so far I have gotten some better gas mileage +3 while crusing. however, I still lack some nessesary equipment (wideband) to get better at it.

is hptuners nessesary, no. I ran around for months on Jareds tune. truck ran great. but I want the truck to run flawless, better than factory ever could. you can only do that by spending countless hours logging info and reading.

I have read more info than my brain can fathom. I also have read more that I have tuned.

next step is a mount for the laptop in the truck. putting the screen some were near the center ac vents.

Re: Project "Darkhorse" Spy Photo's!!!! **56K beware**

No the heads are still on the block, I just cleaned (and cleaned, and cleaned) the block, the intake (it was really gummed up), and the intake side of the heads. I have a new set of valve covers on the way (one was cracked) and will be painting them (red or black) as well as a LS2 oil pan ect as the original fbody pan was cracked (i suspect the cause of the chocolate milk) but I know the engine has not run with that gunk in the crankcase and when the new bottom end components go in the guy will check for crank/bearing grooves, wear and hopefully everything will be ok ( i don't want to be replacing/machining a crank).

Jerad mentioned that the diablosport was a good starter "tuner" probably for the reasons that you stated above. I would agree with you 99 bucket that after you go to all the trouble of getting the LSX in the truck you may as well have it running to its utmost. I was going to get HP tuners at first but the wife is pulling on the reigns a bit and I thought that I could get away with the preadator for what my needs will be. Oh well!!!

Back to what appears to be the hardest part of this swap in finding a good used T-56 for a decent price (riiiiiiiiiiiiight). But Jerads harness, C5 accessories, computer, are on the way and the pan should be coming any day now from gmpartsdirect...................this is really a terrible sickness.............i know that I won't be able to get it done till this fall but DANG......i want it done like yesterday! Thanks again for all the help and good luck with all of those tunes!

Re: Project "Darkhorse" Spy Photo's!!!! **56K beware**

well X i ran my first tank of gas through the damn truck with the new fuel cal. ran it till gas light. pumped 12.87 gallons......wtf I know the cal is set for 18.1 but there is no way in hell the factory is going to give you 5 gal reserve. still cost me 40$ in gas.

on another note, highway/city driving and beatting on it a little gets me an average of 22 mpg. no matter how I drive. seeing 26 on the interstate. well now to shoot for 24 average. I know the thing is running rich.

I am lost on the fuel cal...

I will keep working on it I think I have a pretty good Idea of how to get it dead on. My calibration now is very close but when I fill the tank it does not quite read 100%full. Just a small amount of tweaking should get it done.

If I top it off a little its still a bit short, If i fill it until its right full and pukes out the fill tube its still just at full. Its a minor adjustment I just have to get it done and test it.

could the needle possibly be out of calibration on the gauge, i.e. removing the needles to install a new gauge overlay???
Just a thought.

NO it is out of calibration due to the fact the ECM is from a silverado.

The Silverado has a 26.1 Gallon tank and a different sender
Our tank is a 18 Gallon capacity

I believe, and this is just according to his website, Jerads approach is to piggyback the old computer with a new one to run the engine and the old one to run the other things

SO here are a few updates on the new mill.

As you can see in my other thread I did some preliminary testing with it and some pre-FAST intake testing.

11.84@112mph witha 1.64 sixty foot.

VID:

And the first dyno pulls...
398HP and 407TQ to the tires, the tune is not dead on yet and I am experiancing some valve float at 5800rpm WTF the cam is supposed to pull to 6600 so I am leaving a lot on the table. I will be swapping the stock rockers back on here right away give it a try and see what happens, I have herd the harland sharps i run are a little bit nose heavy

Damn, that's nice. What were you running on the motor with the 5.3? Also, are you running different tunes for on and off the bottle or one basic tune all the time (once you have it set up the way you want it)?

I have different tunes for N/A vs bottle. Less timing, more fuel and shorter shifts on the bottle.

5.3L went 12.94@107 N/A and 11.27@123 on a 200hit

Black X, what cam are you currently running, i just looked through the last 7 pages and only saw you mention the cam you had in the 5.3. Still using this one?

It looks like i might want to start a similar build. You have done a very nice job.

Re: Project "Darkhorse" Spy Photo's!!!! **56K beware**

Another thing that I havn't seen any discusion about is the drive shaft. Is the stock shaft capable enough for the job? Or are acquiring custom drive shafts easy enough that its not even mentioned?

Also, if and when I decide to take on a project like this one, i'd like to keep a manual transmition. Does anybody know the limits of the factory manual trans? I own a 2000 Extreme, currently with a 4.3 and manual trans. I only ask this because I am assuming that it will bolt up to the gev III and IV motors.

Keep up the great job on this thread

PS: As you might have noticed, due to my screen name, I am a fabricator. If there is anything that i can help with please let me know. I work only at the hobbiest level, but have all the equipment to perform professonal jobs.

Your 5spd will not hold up to much abuse by a V8, guaranteed. However, you are already half way to a T56 swap :-)

Thanks for the info, Care to share some light on the T56? I'm assuming you mean the trans out of a LS1 6sp camero. Is there anything i should know about the swap?

Re: Project "Darkhorse" Spy Photo's!!!! **56K beware**

wow read the whole thread. frickin sweet. I have a 94 s10, soon to be a 98 sonoma (front clip) i've done most of the interior, starting on the outside this week. lots of dents. just bought a camera so ill b taking pictures.

do you think I could get 20mpg out of a carburated 383? yeah i'd like to know about the driveshaft too. I've read a whole lot of different opinions on the NV3500 manual transmission? is it worth getting one, what is the tremec? I want to stay manual but the 6sp. are $1200 up around here. best to save for one of these and how difficult are the problems with the mounts and holes i'd have to take care of??? a lot of questions but i'm so anxious to get started with this stuff. I'll be doing a four link in the rear with a ford 8.8 i bleeve. custom coilover setup in the rear, what are good springs for the front?

Care to show me a reliable source for one? I'm a VW guy at heart, and while i know a few things about chevys, locating parts for them in not one of my strong suits. Thanks

BTW, I'm in south Florida so a local place would be better if at all possible.

I'm more south of you, in the kendall area. If you're on any other forums you may recognize my brothers screen name. 98gmajb, he has a 98 full size truck with a few tasteful mods done to it.

I was talking with a another member of the board that seems to be in charge of organizing the local meet. Do you ever head out to it?

PS: Sorry for getting off subject here. Black X, have you received my IM?

I'd just start watching the classifieds section on LS1tech.com and maybe corvetteforum.

Other than that I can only think of dealers () and aftermarket performance engine/tranny builders ().

I just ordered a t-56 from a junk yard in new york. I went through Used Auto Parts on Junk Yard Dog 1st in Used Auto Parts and filled out the form on what I wanted. It sends your request to a bunch of junk yards around the nation and you can call around to get the lowest price when they e-mail you back if they have one. Mine was 1350 shipped

Darkhorse, what did you do about the slide-a-link brackets? Did you elongate the holes for the larger axle tube or get new brackets? I'm fixing to install the same set-up except a Moser housing with the Currie discs. Also, did you use a proportioning valve? Thanks!

Hey dude. I wasw able to get the new U bolts to go through the mouning pads on the slide a links. You have to squeeze the u bolt but it will go through. As far as the disks. I am not using a praportioning valve and everything works fantastic here.

Black X, thanks for the reply. I'm just trying to head off a few problems before I get there. As has been said many times, that is a awesome truck you have.

So whats the current status on this truck now? Any more runs at the track or did you get the new intake?
