Re: Project: 5.3 4l65e 4 door blazer

Yeah im slowly getting there. I just went back to work about a month ago, plus i just moved. So funds are a little low, but still gathering small things i need. Nothering really major i need, i don't think. Maybe exhaust and kwik alternator bracket, computer reprogramming. The rest is just pennies comparied to those i guess. Another $1500 it'll be running.

Yeah im keeping it as long as i got a place to keep it. Its in the shop at my Dads now, but he's trying to sell the place so if he does, then i'll have to sell or find a new place. I live in an apartment now, so i can't keep it here.

As far as $$$ i hope i don't need much more. $300 for Kwik Alt. bracket. no more than $300 for exhaust steve gave me his mufflers, hoses, belts, bolts and nuts $200, tranny cooler $250, A/C lines $250, fuel lines and fittings $300, tranny lines $150. MAF $100 = $1850. So maybe $2000 to $2500 is closer. Just guessing on some of these.

If it makes ya feel any better the MAF should be less than $100....I bought a new one off ebay for like $55 shipped....Or you can just go to the junkyard and pull one...Is yours supposed to look like this?

Re: Project: 5.3 4l65e 4 door blazer

Well put the spark plug wires on and it don't look good to me. They sit pretty close if not sitting on the headers. Are they suppose to be like this. Can i see some pics of someone elses. The last wire on the driver side also hits the steering shaft. Also tried to fix were the throttle bracket hits the water pump. Tried grinding it down, but it don't look like its gonna work. Probably just get a throttle body spacer.

Only good news is the last wire on the passenger side has plently of room so no need to relocate coil.

Yea its getting cut off anyway. I'm also probably gonna space the steering box out so it kicks the shaft away from the headers a little. Maybe it will clear the plug wire also.

Paul I'll help whenever you need with the wiring. With the plug wires when I run the stockers like you I put the DEI heat sleeves on and had no problems. I now have the MSD and the boots are bendable to position them away from the tubes.

Cool man thanks. I'll run it like this if they melt i'll get the MSD ones. You think spacing the steering box over like you did will help it from hitting that last wire.

I guess they are flat top pistons. But i don't think that would make it a 4.8.

not sure, i do think they have specific stampings on them somewhere. you could measure the stroke too i guess, the 4.8's are only 3.27ish and the 5.3's are 3.62. found this on another forum, maybe it will help:

12552215...364.......cast....medium journal...3.62" stroke, Gen. III, 6.0L
12552216...325,350,364.......cast....medium journal...3.62" stroke, Gen. III 5.7L LS1, 5.3L, 6.0L
12553312...293.......cast....medium journal, 3.27" stroke, Gen. III, 4.8L
12553482...293.......cast....medium journal, 3.27" stroke, Gen. III, 4.8L

It's on both front and rear. It's stamped "4.8/5.3"

It does not have only 4.8 or 5.3 so people have difficulty figuring which one it is.

Older 5.3s had dished but I think the newer ones are commingwith flattops. Not sure.

ah, i assumed it was just on the back. it appears that the paint mark is near the 5.3 in the pic, who knows about the flat tops...werent some of the 5.3's designated as "HO" engines? that would explain the flat tops...

Depends what the 5.3 was used in. They were used in a bunch of different cars/trucks.

if the 5.3 had 799 heads they came with flatops, if they had the 706 or 8xx casting they were dished.

Re: Project: 5.3 4l65e 4 door blazer

try measuring the stroke, like someone stated above, that should give you your answer....
idk i was just wondering sincei opened up an 02 engine had flat tops and i was told it was a 4.8, plus had water in one of the cylinders,so i just got a 6.0..
the only ones ive seen that only have one stamp are 6.0's and 5.3 aluminum blocks...
it would be best if you measure the stroke, thatll clear it out for everybody...
plus 6.0's also have lq4 and lq9, they are suppose to be defined with flat tops or dished...

Re: Project: 5.3 4l65e 4 door blazer

The VIN says 5.3. Its a 5.3! I'm not going to pull the motor and tear it apart again just for second guessing myself for a min. I have no doubt its a 5.3.
