Project: 5.3 4l65e 4 door blazer

Well some of you probably seen me post a few times asking questions. So since the parts are starting to come in i'm starting a project thread. I recently bought a 07' 5.3 with a 4l65e with 6k miles on it. My goal is to have this thing completed by the end of summer, so stay posted. I will be updating as i go. I'm aslo new to the swap so, any advice as i go along will help. Thanks Paul. Now on with the parts.

The motor

The tranny

The Cam

Cam Sprocket gear, gaskets, and new cam bolts.

Cam specs.

New Pushrods and valve springs

New timing cover gasket

The LS6 intake I bought used with fuel rails, injectors, and throttlebody.

New intake bolts

And this is where im at. So far I just got the motor pulled, and will be cleaning the frame up while the parts are getting installed in the motor.

Does your engine have D.O.D (displacement on demand)?

If it does, then, you'l also need a valley cover from a Gen IV, non-DOD engine.
All Gen IV engine blocks have the special oil ports that go from the valley
area down to the lifter bores. Non-DOD valley covers have no oil feed and of course, no solenoid valves.
Plus, they simply block off these lifter ports with O-rings.
A valley cover from an LS2 Corvette will work great.

I see you have new lifters, make sure you use the appropriate lifter guides as well.

Hey phil will the Gen III valley cover not work? Are the knock sensors different on that 5.3?

Paul If the 3rd gen valley will work I have one you can have!

Man thats a nice set of parts there. I need to get over there and check it out.

If this motor has DOD, he'll just need to swap the valley plate for one that didn't have it. Yes, a Gen 3 will do it.

I beleive they in fact did start putting DOD on the 5.3's in 07. If it is a DOD, couldn't he just disable it by replacing the 4 DOD lifters with the same 4 non DOD lifters and use a valley cover from a pre- 07' engine?

Re: Project: 5.3 4l65e 4 door blazer

Yea i believe the motor has D.O.D. Cause when I talked to jared he said change the lifters and valley cover. I also have the lifters but forgot to post them. They are LS7 lifters, i'll get a pic up today. Still waiting on a bunch of stuff from jared so I'll get pics of that stuff when it shows up.

My shop flooded the other day so i been trying to dig drainage and put up gutters on the front. I'm going to try and start cleaning the frame up today.

Steve if you aint got nothing to do this afternoon hit me up. I been working alot so i don't get much time at home. But I should be here today.

Re: Project: 5.3 4l65e 4 door blazer

Well heres a small update. I stripe pretty much everything off the front, but didn't have time to clean it.

My new GM LS7 lifters

Heres the parts pile. I'll keep most of it.

I've asked once and didn't get a straight answer. What is the purpose of this thing. I was told it is for emissions, but what does it do. And do I need to keep it. We don't have emission checks in AL.

And my last pic for today is my shop, in case anyone cares to see it.

Looks like the air pump. It pretty much injects air into the exhaust manifolds to cut down on emissions when the engine is cold. They fail often and are expensive to fix. Get rid of it.

I was told that if I used the Ad Valorem Tax and got a GA license plate and registration...that I would have to do some sort of emissions...I have no idea what it would consist of..but I kept my AL plates...

Re: Project: 5.3 4l65e 4 door blazer

Did a little bit of cleaning on the frame today. I still have a little left to do, but most of it is clean. I haven't decided if Im going to paint it or undercoat it again. I'm thinking the undercoating will hold up better. I should be getting parts in this week from jared. I'm waiting on the oil pan to start the motor.

Heres my dad helping me clean

Heres the results

Heres what I used

He is probably refering to the pads where the stock motor mounts mount to the frame. They are raised compared to the trucks> I am at work but look at your mounting location and find the same from a truck. It would lower the engine for better handling.

zx9 just answered it for me. you can see them in your pics, they are the triangular looking pieces on the frame that the motor mounts attach too. as far as i know they dont have to be removed (they definitely help with oil pan clearance), though the motor will sit higher.

I think i'll leave them in there, since they are welded in. Plus like you said it helps with oil pan clearance. I just hope nothing hits the hood.

Re: Project: 5.3 4l65e 4 door blazer

Well pretty much finished up the cleaning of the frame today. Still needs a touch up here and there but I ran out of undercoating. I'm real pleased the way it came out. Looks a lot better in person. Now I need to figure out how to clean the damn shop floor lol.

After claening I prep the frame with this just to remove as much grease as possible.

Then I used 3M undercoating to spray the frame

also cleaned up the coils with some degeaser.

In the process of sandblasting the control arms. I plan on puting all new enegry suspension bushing in them and the sway bar.

looking good Paul, Do you have a press to replace all those bushings? I rebuilt my front end before my swap and I went out and bought a harbor frieght press. You are more than welcome to borrow it if you need it.

I will also trade you, your PM box was full.

I dont remember the name but I have a catalog around here somewhere. I just bought a complete kit with everything including balljoints, bushings, sway bar stuff, steering stuff.

Yea I used it to press the old ones off, I think the new ones are bolt on somehow. It has been about 4~5 years ago so kinda hard to remember

Man I got some SEMS undercaoting free from my buddy and that crap still doesnt feel dry 2 years later. Also after I pulled the motor after my incident, that stuff attracts dirt like crazy and is very hard to clean.

Re: Project: 5.3 4l65e 4 door blazer

Sandblasting this shit is time consuming. It took me damn near 50lbs of sand to do one control arm. But anyway got it sprayed and bushing for control arms and sway bar are on the way. Also ordered new power performance upper and lower balljoints. As soon as they arrive, i'll get them pressed in and get a pic up, but heres one of the lowers.

Re: Project: 5.3 4l65e 4 door blazer

got some parts in from Jared today. Not really impressed with the headers, but i guess they will work.

H3 Pan with dipstick and tube, and windage tray.

New high mount A/C compressor Kit. I really like this kit, comes with all aluminum brackets.

And heres some pics of the headers and motor mounts.

Are they suppose to be like this or did someone forget to grind them down. Or does it even really matter.

Doing a little test fitting, not permenant. Still need to paint them.

Still waiting on a few things but pretty much have most of the stuff for the motor. We will start putting everything on and in the motor maybe next week some time. I also recieved new bushing for my control arms but still waiting on the new balljoints. I'll keep ya'll posted.

That A/C set-up is nice....what did that cost ya? I know the hoses are $225

The sanderson headers leave some to be desired. Jared made some nice ones in house but the $$ is hard. I will temp to fab my own headers up in a year or two when I go FI.....

I like the A/C kit too...That's the route I want to go when I do my swap..Other than the FRCs not clearing the truck coils...If you had the LS2/LS1 coils wouldn't the FRCs still fit with the high mount kit?

Re: Project: 5.3 4l65e 4 door blazer

Waiting to get my control arms back from the mechanic shop, hopefully tomorrow. They are pressing in the bushing and balljoints for me. Also still waiting on parts from jared, i figured they would be here by know. As soon as i get the control arms back i'll get it rolling again. Then begin on the motor.

Feel free to stop by anytime Steve, I haven't gone back to work yet so im pretty much home all day.
