Re: my 5.3 swap

single 40....yours should sound prett good with dual 40s. try and put an X-pipe or H-pipe in if you have room, it will make an awesome sound.

Re: my 5.3 swap

ok, I am going to bring this back to the top....again...

I am apparently having some cooling issues still, only when I am going slow, high revs....since I am using it for crawling, that happens alot.
I am using 2 12" efans without a shroud, I know a shroud might help, but I really dont have a way to make a nice one. I am thinking about getting a taurus fan, if I can find one cheap.

question about the the water flow through the radiator....when I look in the filler hole, how much flow should I see after the tstat opens up? I wonder if the water pump is dieing.....? what lb. rating should my cap be?

I can drive this thing around all day to the beach, on the road, whatever, but when it is revving, it is building heat faster......cornfused......

Re: my 5.3 swap

Big96Zr2, do you have a body lift on that thing? If you do and don't mind losing A/C you can put the radiator into the core support and replace the little fans you have with a Lincoln Mark VIII 18" electric fan. Most say it flows upwards of 5000 CFM but really it's about 4000-4500. Either way, I'm willing to bet it's double what your 12" fans do combined and comes with it's own shroud. They're on eBay for about 60-100 bucks. I plan to do the same thing with my next project.

Edit: Be warned though that it does draw 100amps at start up and requires 33-35amps to run the fan at full speed, so make sure your electrical system is up to par.

Re: my 5.3 swap

that thing sounds great! did you happen to get it tuned and put on a dyno? I'd love to see the numbers a stock 5.3 with an ls6 cam, head work and tune got. especially with it still running the truck manifold.

Re: my 5.3 swap

after I posted that, I was lookin on ebay last night and found those fans......I must have used different terms or something, who knows. damn, those things pull some serious amps. do the taurus fans pull the same? I have been lookin at the LS1 fans as well. I wonder if those pull the same about of amps??

I have had it tuned, but I never put it on the dyno. I would like to know what kind of numbers it would put down though. I would have to find some smaller roller tires, dont thing running the 42s on a dyno would work good for good numbers.

Re: my 5.3 swap

The Taurus fans pull about 3500 cfm I've read, and ya the Lincoln Mark VIII fans do pull some serious amperage. The 98+ LS1 Camaro/Pontiac fans are pretty pathetic as far as pulling CFM but yet they do cool 5.7L's and 6.0L's alright. Only problem when comparing what they can cool is that the LSx motors in those cars have aluminum blocks and aluminum heads to help out in the heat transfer process.

I think if you can clear the Lincoln Mark fan I'd order that since they are so cheap. Hunt around on Car-Part.com to find local fans near you, otherwise eBay has them for a reasonable price I think. Make sure to get the pig tail for the fans, otherwise that's another $30 bucks you'll have to buy to wire the fans.

I would venture to guess your 5.3L is putting about 320hp 350lb-ft at the flywheel.

Edit: Btw Big96Zr2, to support my Lincoln fan on this next build I have a 250amp alternator and an Optima Yellow top. You most definitely DO NOT need the high output alternator but I would suggest at least the heavy duty battery. For your winch and off-road use I'd vouch for the Red Top. The 5.3L's came with 105 and 130 amp alternators from the factory so if you have the 105 amp, the 130 amp could be a quick and easy "upgrade" by finding a used one in the junkyard.

Re: my 5.3 swap

The key to using the Mark VIII fans is the wiring harness.

Go the two speed route, use 3 60 or 80 amp relays, good wire, solder every connection possible, use two thermostats (if you aren't using the PCM to control the fans),

I've seen several "wiring diagrams" for these that were, at best, not ideal for this unit.

Another fan is the C6 Vette assembly that used PWM to control fan speed.

Re: my 5.3 swap

Phil how would you go about using the PCM to control the two speed fan version of the Lincoln Mark VIII fan? It's a wrinkle I have not yet ironed out.

The Fbody uses two fans, you use one circuit for the low speed and the high speed circuit for the the high speed on the ford fan.

These have to go through relays. The PCM is just giving the ground circuit, nothing to do with power. Identify the low speed and the high speed ground circuit on the PCM and use those as the grounds on the relays.

The ford fan is a little tricky because you don't want to have power going to both the low speed and the high speed circuit at the same time.

The corvette PCM/fans are different. It uses pulse wave modulation to control fan speed. There's a module on the side of this fan shroud.

The full size truck uses a single blade electric fan, I haven't looked at a diagram for this one yet.

Youre talking about Silverados and such right? I thought they had two fans, similar to Camaros/Firebirds? Check out this ebay auction for a radiator fan out of a 05 Tahoe:

Cool Re: my 5.3 swap

Hey there Big96Zr2

Awesome project. I am just starting a 5.3 swap into a '60 Cadillac for cruising. The Caddy weighs about the same as the Silverado this motor came out of, so it should perform about the same. After I have it running, I will most likely do some motor mods to increase the performance a little. I'm not planning on going too wild since the Caddy is for my wife.

I got a wiring diagram from http://www.ahdol.com/ and it seems to be complete, but I haven't started the harness conversion yet. Where did you get your pin-out info and can you share any pointers before I start? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: my 5.3 swap

Is the fan with more blades the low speed and one with fewer high?

Re: my 5.3 swap

thanks for the replies guys. I still havent decided on what fan to try out. I still have the stock Alt, but I do have an optima yellow top and I am in the process of changing the wire from the batt to the alt, I think I used one that is too small for the distance it has to go. no biggie really.

I got the pinout diagrams from a buddy of mine, but I think they are pretty much year/model specific.....atleast I believe so.

Re: my 5.3 swap

You should also think about getting a separate trans cooler so you're not taxing the radiator as much.

Re: my 5.3 swap

I tried to send a pm, but your box is full......please get me a qoute with shipping to 32218. thanks

as for the trans cooler....I have an external cooler only. you would think with the Howe dual pass radiator, it wouldnt be getting hot. thats why I think it is the fans I have.....
like I said before, I can drive down the road no problems overheating at all....even with the fans OFF....but when i come to a stop light I have to turn them on.
with what I do, my truck will see a lot of time going slow, but high RPMs....

Brian
