my 5.3 swap

I guess I will start my swap thread now, since I have been slowly workin on it for the last few weeks...
well, since we finally got moved into the new house, I have had some time and the space to start on my V8 swap. The motor is a 01 5.3L that I got from ebay for 350 bux with a harness and ecm. I will be able to use my PS pump (if I dont change it to a PSC pump) and I might be able to use my altenator.

I will keep a list of the parts I buy...
01 5.3 Vortec--$350
trans adapter kit from advanced adapters--$140
new intake--$50
Starter--
2003 LS6 cam/springs--$150
belt--

guess its on to the pics

more too come in a few

Brian

Re: my 5.3 swap

is that flywheel flat,, because if you are using the hughes adapter you will need the 5.3 style curved flexplate

Re: my 5.3 swap

in 96, the trans was still an older version of the 4L60E, so the spacing for the flywheel and the TC is wrong....hence the need for the spacer. the kit I got was from Adanced Adapters...

so you have the curved 5.3 flexplate because it looks like the flat one in the pics??

Re: my 5.3 swap

The flat flywheels have nothing to do w/ the trans (on the 4.3). They changed the flywheels on them cause of the crankshaft.

right but if you use the hughes adapter you need the curved flex plate,, if you use the flat one the converter will not pull up to the flex plate

trust me i have done several of these ls1/5.3/6.0 swaps to the older style trans

Re: my 5.3 swap

I cant wait too...once I get the cam put in this weekend, I will be setting the motor back in for the last time.....hopefully *knock on wood* I just hope there arent any midgets with hammers in there....I turned it over by hand and looked down the intake/exhaust runners and spark plug holes to see if there was anything unusual in there....everything looks pretty clean.

yea, the tires are small....ha ha I cant wait either, gonna be fun when its done.

I am gonna try and use the factory gauges, just not sure on what to do yet.....I have the pin outs for both motors, so it shouldnt be too big of a problem.

Re: my 5.3 swap

ok, well I guess I could do an update...since it has been a little while.

I pretty much have the harness done, except for taping all the new connections and wrapping all those wires with loom. I dont want to do it all yet, until the motor runs...
E-fans are installed, they are just a temp install until I can come up with a good way to mount them, kinda like Chris did.
new belt, oil sensor, MAP sensor, upper raditor hose and belt from Napa...got the fuel lines ran to the frame, just need to connect them.
the starter circut is all good to go, just had to trace some wires down after hooking one up wrong.... guess that will happen when you have starred at nothing but wire for the last 2 weeks! haha....so it does crank over!!!! yay
The intake, water pump, transmission pan and exhaust mani's are torqued down...I had to take the fawkin trans pan off since the main harness plug for the trans pushed down into the pan....
I will hopefully working on the exhaust and motor mounts tomorrow, along with getting a new hydro line made that goes from the pump to the resivior, since the front of the motor is a few inches foward of where it was.
spark plugs and wires are in well....NGK plugs with stock wires
I hope to get the this thing running by thursday! I want to take it to River Rock this weekend....if not, I am still goin! gotta do some wheelin some way or another.

I think that is all for now.
I will update the list on my first post...

it looks great i 'd like to do a 5.3 also.iwould change the location of your k/n.make it longer around 24" to the fresh air opening at lite.that location will give you positive air and cooler air, makes for more power and efficientcy, just my 2 cents but there's tests to back it up. good luck like to see more .

Question Re: my 5.3 swap

Quick question, are you going to run that clutch fan on there or just run the electric fans? If you don't run the clutch fan, will that fan shroud still be effective? I'm currently under way on a Chevy 355 swap into an old Jeep I have and was thinking about this the other day.

Re: my 5.3 swap

I plan on getting some tubing for the intake and moving it to the back of the engine compartment. I dont have any inner fenders and I also have a cowl hood, so air flow will be at a maximum.
I am running 2 12" efans, should be plenty to cool it. the shroud is still there since it holds the top of the radiator and I havent trimmed that part off yet....or I might make my own mounts.

Thanks for the response. I have an 05' GMC Sierra with the 5.3 and that was the first year they came with electric fans only and no clutch fan. Mine has had zero cooling issues running only the fans so go for it. I actually just came back from towing a trailer with 4 dirtbikes, a quad, 25 gallons of spare gas plus 5 passengers up the steepest grade in our area and the temp mark went up maybe 5* if that. Just make sure your radiator is up to par and you should be good.

what is everyone doing with the throttle body coolant lines? I know JTR sells the "T" fitting, is there any other way to do it?

Re: my 5.3 swap

that would be awesome...thanks

I will have the plates for the motor mounts tomorrow, got the tube for them eariler today and also borrowed a buddies welder to finish up the exhaust and to weld the mounts. just hope I got all the wiring right...

question about VATS...I know it keeps the injectors from firing, but will the motor fire off any when you first crank it or does VATS need to be disabled first? I have a buddy coming over tomorrow hopefully to program the ECM with EFI Live, so VATS will be gone.....I was just hopin to hear it fire off for second.....haha

man when I am done with this swap, I dont want to look at any wires for long time!!!!!!!! ahahahaha I just hope I got everything connected right...

Re: my 5.3 swap

ok guys, I need some help.

my truck will not start....it will crank and crank and crank....VATS is disabled..I have checked the all the obvious things. it is grounded, it has power where it is supposed to, when it is supposed too, it has spark, and has fuel pressure at the rail....but the injectors wont fire at all.
we kinda think that it might be a crank sensor, I replaced the cam sensor, so it should be good to go...

someone please help.......................

looking at your pis i dont see you maf sensor I think you need a signal from that for the injectors to fire cause i have had mine come loose and the truck will just die like its running out of fuel

by the way here is the pic of the throttle body coolant by pass

it is pretty simple

where does the other end of that hose go?

the motor should still run without the MAF...but mine is bypassed anyway, since I am running on the MAP sensor...

this is a adapter i made in the lower radiator hose or you could tap a fitting in the passenger side of the radiator.

Re: my 5.3 swap

ok....I drove it. HOLY SHIT, it feels awesome...pulls great even with the 42s. It feels like it used to with the V6 and the T-case in low range....basically doubled the power, its impressive. Only a few more things to button up and it will be trail ready. gotta pull the intake off and tighten down the oil pressure sensor, it is leaking
I need to button up the harness wiring...adding loom, taping connections, adding the heat wrap to the harness around the exhaust, etc, etc.
It just feels awesome to finally have it out of the garage and moving on its own power. I dont have any vids of it yet, but I will have some this week.
