Re: LS2 Re - Build; Beware 56K!
well, this thread has been nice and quiet. so ive been slacking lately... again! started doing some final sanding and priming, got the crossmember in (not bolted yet) and worked on the ol' a/c notch. its almost done, i just need to load a mock block in and test fit where the mounting bolts sit
![]() ![]() ![]() do not laugh at my welds! my breaker kept popping so i couldnt get a continuous bead ![]() its just tacked in place for now, its going to be welded on the inside and outside since the welder i have is 110 |

Re: LS2 Re - Build; Beware 56K!
welding inside the frame is easy when youre awesome! unfortunately, im not that good... i cant get to the front of the notch very easily once its in. the welding im doing is on the backside of the "new" piece before its attached to the frame. once its welded in place, all i can do is make a nice valley and get some good pen
Steve, my frame looks great on cam.. its still pretty rough. id say i have a good two hours of sanding to go! wanna come help? LOL JE box is my old piston box |

Re: LS2 Re - Build; Beware 56K!
i thought this would be neat.....
heres a pic of my truck years ago when i first pulled my 4.3L. frame still intact without any notching! ![]() next, this is a pic of my first notch.... oh man, i sucked at welding and then my notch didnt fit so i ground it out more so it would. then i ended up not having enough room behind the compressor for the lines - so i never did run ac ![]() now i have tons of room in behind! ![]() |

Re: LS2 Re - Build; Beware 56K!
Frank, you said not to notch my frame so it doesn't bottom out but we got caught up on something else and you never said why. I was thinking of putting in a 4 inch piece of pipe cut in half, so only 2 inches into the frame. Then weld a piece of flat bar over the frame to box it in.

Re: LS2 Re - Build; Beware 56K!
It' ahead of any mounting point so it's not a big deal. Marginal loss in torsioinal rigidity but some triangulation and solid core mounts could take care of that. In theory one should always tig a frame, but it really isn't a big deal. Localized hardening on a non stressed area won't hurt anything.
Thanks for the beer frank! Love the light weight welds too. Full of holes! ![]() ![]() |

how i wish i had a tig.... my welds arent that bad Ryer! esp since i have a crappy 110 that keeps popping the breaker after welding about an inch
and Andy, listen to him, hes the engineer.. id say its pretty solid though |

Good info bbcc... I always wondered about the strength of it after cutting it up, even if its boxed in... Looks like I'll be doing some convincing to the old man to notch the frame for my swap. Lol.

this is probably a stupid question, but is the only reason you notch the frame is to mount a part of the ac right?

yeah its not necessary, even if you want to run A/C... there is a bracket made that will relocate the compressor so you don't have to notch it.
