Re: ls1 swap in under a week

Good start - did you order the harness or oil pan yet?

I'm doing the same thing as you, getting everything I need beforehand. I will be taking a good 2-3 weeks to do mine.

How about?
Throttle cable bracket
Air intake with filter
MAF/02 sensors
Exhaust collectors
Power steering/air conditioning hoses

i havnt ordered the harness or pan, if there is a shortage of h3 pans ive got a truck pan from a different swap ill use. id like to go w/ the h3 one so i dont have to cut apart the crossmember. if i have to its no big deal, id just rather not

im just going to make my own throttle cable bracket

intake stuff will be from intake hoses.com, they have everything and have had good experience w/ them.

im still shopping for the motor so if it doesnt have the maf and 02 then ill need to get those

good call on the exhaust collectors

im going to hold off on the ac until after summer ( im going to school and work summers) so im not so tight on cash

for p/s stuff there are a couple good shops nearby that make just about any hydro/brake/steering lines, and Ive got a bit of steel braided line left over from another project, i do need to add that to the list though,

thanks

Re: ls1 swap in under a week

Be ready to wait on a harness for about a month or so. But Jerads work is well worth the wait!!!

Re: ls1 swap in under a week

you dont have to worry about doing new clutch lines. you can use your s10 slave and throwout bearing but you will need to get the throwout spring from a camaro. other than that all the hydralic hooks up the same.

Re: ls1 swap in under a week

If you are tight on cash, why not go for a 5.3L first and upgrade to the LS1 later? Unless you get a good deal...just a thought. I'm not trying to ruin your LS1 dream (since I have the same dream) but just trying to help you before you get too deep into it. I have close to $5k into parts and I haven't even loosened my first bolt You might have to buy tools as well for this project, I also end up buying some kind of tool for every big project I do.

This is how every project goes for me, I say "well if I do it, I might as well do it right." That phrase alone has cost me thousands of dollars. However, I want it to be reliable as possible.

Please post pics when you start your conversion.

Just for reference, here's my setup.

Here's what I have so far:
'02 Chev 5.3L with acc. minus alternator - $1000
4L65e - $900
alternator - $200 with lifetime warranty
Current Perf - wiring, tune, 02/MAF sensor, mounts, headers - $1532
corvette fuel filter/regulator, throttle/cruise cable - $100
fuel lines, fittings, fuel pressure gauge - $300
vette radiator with dual fan kit - $500
hummer oil pan and accessories - $302

Tools Purchased for project (in addition to what I already have)
Hobart Handler 140 welder - $650
Bandsaw - $100 (need to pick up still)

Still need:
Radiator hoses - $50-70
fuel pump and harness - $160
Coolant overflow tank that holds computer - $20 (junkyard)
throttle bracket - $5 (junkyard)
a/c lines and power steering lines - $20 (junkyard)
rear end - $400-500 (junkyard - with new brakes, etc.)
Misc supplies - $300-400 (bolts, parts, etc.)
Exhaust collectors - $20 (exhaust shop - temp exhaust to drive from house to exhaust shop)
Full exhaust - $400-500

Re: ls1 swap in under a week

yea, i just finished a 4.8 swap into my crawler. when i bought it i had plans to swap it to an ls1 later but after taking it out i cant justify spending the money and time to pull it out for about 80-100 lbs and a little more power. this time I definetly want to do the ls1.

oh and it will get done in a week, and it will be clean... ill take a bunch of pics once i get all the stuff (prob wont be for a little while considering the harness looks like it will be a while, and depending how soon I find a good motor. Also, it'll be my daily driver so im kinda picky w/ what parts are going in it.)

thanks

Re: ls1 swap in under a week

1 week is doable. I had mine in the truck and fired once within only a few days. I only worked on it in the evenings after work. I wouldnt try to rush it becuase thats when you will half ass something and wont be happy with the results. honestly, take your time and do it right, and do it once.

I hear ya on that one. I'm planning on notching the frame for the a/c regardless. I might wait on hooking up the a/c until later though. We'll see how the swap goes. It sounds like you have been through these swaps before.

Re: ls1 swap in under a week

well, having an lq4 picked up this weekend. after I see what condition its in ill decide if im gonna use it or not. but by the sound of it, new plans are to use this. Its an older one w/ the iron heads but w/ really low miles. plans are to do a nice head and cam combo still w/ a t56.

I believe up until 2001. Whenever 6.0L's started coming out with the aluminum heads is when the shorter cranks came out. The longer crankshaft is a desirable item on eBay for those wishing to use a 700R4/Turbo tranny and not use a spacer or a custom torque converter.

Are you kidding me? I would be a little bit peeved to say the least. I had a similar thing happen to me. I was looking at a truck and I told the guy I wanted it, just needed to get a loan. Well the truck was parked for sale right outside of the bank. My father and I had to run some errands and then we were planning on going to the bank to get a loan. I got to the bank and got the loan. As I'm coming out of the bank walking across the parking lot, the owner was letting someone else test drive it. When the owner and the test driver came back, he said it was sold. I was sitting there with $4000 cash in hand. I was bummed.

Re: ls1 swap in under a week

finally got a truck its a 2001 extra cab ls black 4cyl 5speed, all stock, from orig. owners... it has a few minor dents, needs a new hood, and could use new carpet. It doesnt run due to a bad alternator and bad bat. got it for 1500 im pretty stoked about it.

edit: also ordered the rad., arp rod bolts, new head and main bolts, throttle cable and cruse cable

Re: ls1 swap in under a week

little update in whats going on...
-i found a built t56 on ls1 tech, should ship out mon of next week
-ordered up the harness and headers
-decided since the harness is going to take so long im not going to wait until all the parts are here to get started... so @ about 3:30 I started pulling the motor and trans and finished up around 8:00

as soon as the flywheel gets in, im sending the internals out to get balanced, then its all going in.
