LS1 Cali Smog
OK guys i know someone on here has the answers for this. What are all of the smog emissions parts that need to be on the LS1 motor to pass California Smog? I am putting an LS1 into my Current Sema Project and want it to be legit. Cali smog is a pain in the ass so what do i need to do and what problems have you run into doing this conversion?

Re: LS1 Cali Smog
The answers depend on the year of the engine and the truck.
Your best bet is to have the computer programmed for an 01-02 vehicle, then you won't need the EGR, but you will need the EVAP canister, Fuel tank pressure sensor, and rear O2's. That's about it. |

Re: LS1 Cali Smog
In addition to the above, you should contact one of the CARB smog referrees.
They'll also tell you that all emissions equipment for the motor, which must be the same year or newer than the truck, be connected and functional. In addition, you'll need to clarify if you can use an "LS1" motor, which only came in a car, vs a 5.3 or 6 liter Truck Motor. In a popular TPI conversion manual, the Author provides clarity on how to make a TPI conversion into an S10 legal in the Republik of Kalifornia. The principals would be identical for an LS based engine conversion. |

Don't let the "LS1" only from a car thing scare you...
A real easy way around that is to program the computer as a truck, you can tell them anything they want to hear about what the engine is, but they can only go by what the computer tells them. |

Ah....That's right. That would have also solved an issue for an Arizona swapper. The Arizona DMV wouldn't let him register his truck because it had a motor from a GTO in it instead of a truck motor.

Re: LS1 Cali Smog
Dude the more i research into this motor the more im finding out but here is what i have so far (and i am totally not a motor guy i honestly dont know sh*# about this stuff thats why im asking). As far as the stamped numbers on this motor i did some research and found it to be a GM vortec 5.3l LM7 which was produced by GM in 1999-2006 and was available in everything from the Escalade to the silverado. I was told it came out of a 2003 Escalade that was wrecked and the motor only has 8k on it. I also got a tranny that was recently completely rebuilt with corvette internals. I am going to have a friend pull the motor apart and rebuild it while i get the rest of the parts needed to get it running. On monday i will find out if my S-10 is going to sema so if so then the race is on to get all of the performance parts and get my truck done for the show. Does anyone know or have acess to some kind of database where i can see what smog needs to be on this motor?

Re: LS1 Cali Smog
The first one I did passed inspection with no prob. they just told me before i went in to make sure i used all the emission equipment that my truck had O2's, Cats, evap can. I also had the computer programed as a truck. . . but when me and the inspector spoke afterwords he was telling me he didn't see to many swaps and some inspectors can get really picky. . .
