JTR "Steam Vent Tee"
Hey,
I made a call to JTR to order a "Steam Vent Tee" and was asked for the following measurments they need so I order the correct size: LS2 rubber rad hose diameter (upper hose) LS6 crossover pipe rubber hose diameter (either: 1/4", 5/16, or 3/8" for LS6) for the steam venting tee. Would anyone be able to help with these? I don't have them to measure. Thanks for your help. |

Re: JTR "Steam Vent Tee"
I just plugged mine when it started to leak.
I've been running it all summer like this until i learned what it was..... So i checked it last week, and no bubbles! no air. Straight water started coming out. |

Re: JTR "Steam Vent Tee"
i have my 99% of whatever needed to do the swap. for my truck.....it's all in pieces and i now have to pull the motor. i'll get to that shortly. my engine is also 100% is pieces, it was tank cleaned for three days, honed, cam bearings installed and pistons cleaned. i will soon pull the 4.3 motor and put the 5.3 L33 together soon. my wife is due next month (baby girl), so we are busy with that, etc. i'm enjoying working on this and don't want to mess things up. ![]() but now it's dark out just as i leave work. Re: JTR "Steam Vent Tee"
thanks lots!!! ![]() i am putting it together myself. wish me luck lol. i had help putting my comp vavles and springs and retainers in the heads and got the heads cleaned. reason i haven't strated yet is because when doing more reading on my engine it is basically a ls6, so i am debating getting a ls6 block. where i will need pretty much just the pistons. (internally) i can't find one in my area but i know of a shop that has both new and used ls1 blocks and say's the differsnce in ls6 blocks to ls1 is not worth thinking about. (i'm talking just the block) i like the fact that an ls6 has 405 hp stock over mine having 310. i'm in no rush and don't want to regret cheaping out lol. just i will have to get Jared to re-tune my pcm. |

Re: JTR "Steam Vent Tee"
youve got an aluminum 5.3 right? getting 405 crank hp wouldnt be too hard at all with what youve got. what heads are you using?

Re: JTR "Steam Vent Tee"
i'd like to start with 405 hp and build up from there lol. i'm using the stock heads which are ls6 #799 heads that came with my 5.3. (which it is aluminum.) i just think i'd be happier with an ls6 block and having a 5.7 only i can't find one. anyone know a part number for a ls6 block if I was to buy new? a place here has lots of ls2's for 1200 canadian new but no ls6's. Re: JTR "Steam Vent Tee"
I would like to but a lot of my parts I have now that would work on a ls6 I'm not sure will work on ls2.
I want to check in with the corvette/ camaro club in my area I just found out about to see if we can trade some parts. |

Re: JTR "Steam Vent Tee"
you could use an LS1 block, but depending on mileage (or kilometer-age?? lol). do you have any pics of the cylinder liners in your block? ive heard that they are thicker than the LS1 sleeves and can be bored to 3.905, which would make it a 5.7. might be worth looking into

Re: JTR "Steam Vent Tee"
i will try to look for a pick to post. or just take another shot. i read up about boring a 5.3 in a few forums and it made me dizzy. it didn't seen like anyone knew for sure what they were talking about. but for the money boring it may be the same and buying a used block and selling mine? |

Re: JTR "Steam Vent Tee"
thanks Petro. so those would be the main differences? what about the main crank? i just bought a new ls6 valley cover and used ls6 fuel rail so that sucks but i do have a ls2 crossover pipe, rad hoses, oil pan kit and that ls2 accessory kit but if i can find a ls6 block i will just need pistons. if i can sell off my 4.3/ trans that's help $$$ wise. |

Re: JTR "Steam Vent Tee"
technically you can sell your 4.3 and your aluminum 5.3 if youre getting a new block anyway. it wont hurt going bigger thats for sure, especially if you are planning on buying new pistons anyway.
your current 5.3 block is really not much different than a LS6 block, talk to a machine shop about boring the cylinder liners to LS6 specs like i mentioned earlier. if it can be done, it might be cheaper and easier for you since you wont have to find a low mileage block, have to sell yours, etc. have you reinstalled the heads yet? if not snap some pics of the cylinders so we can see how think the sleeves are. those are a few pics of the motor cleaned up. the spots that look like rust are from the bag, i've been using the motor as a shoe rack. |

looks good man. could you take a pic or two of the top of the block so we can get a good look at the cylinder deck?

Re: JTR "Steam Vent Tee"
In one of the LSx books, it lists the aluminum 5.3 block as a "budget" LS6 block. Meaning it is essentially the same casting as a LS6 block but with thicker sleeves to create a smaller bore.
The LS6 block had "windows" cast into the block for better breathing in the crankcase area. The other blocks didn't have these windows or they were drilled out to create them. Some will argue that these cast in windows made the block weaker. I have yet to read anything that has stated an engine failed due to this. I say bore your block out to 3.898". the only difference will be you're block says 5.3L instead of 5.7L. The money you spend to machine this block will not differ much from the machine work you would pay for on a used ls1/6 block, unless the place selling these blocks has already performed the machine work. Consider align hone mains, cylinder hone, decking or at least verify it's straight. Last edited by art : 11-06-2009 at 01:47 PM. |

Re: JTR "Steam Vent Tee"
yep, those sleeves look pretty thick...plenty of material to be bored safely from the looks of it.

Re: JTR "Steam Vent Tee"
not sure, thats why its best to talk to a machine shop. art had good insight earlier, may want to check with him. i dont know if it costs any more or less north of the border lol

Re: JTR "Steam Vent Tee"
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/new-ls...questions.html
check this out. may answer some ?s you may have later on. It will cost more to bore out the 5.3 than it would to hone a used 5.7L. How much more? You'll have to check with a machine shop. I don't know the bore size of a 5.3L off the top of my head but get that number and the final bore size (3.898") and ask your machinist. |

Re: JTR "Steam Vent Tee"
but he needs the 5.7 block, and he already has the 5.3 block. thats where im assuming the cost savings comes in.
