Re: First gen 5.3 swap.

Dropped the motor in today to mock up some stuff and check all clearances.
I made the notch a litte bigger than i had to but whatever, nothing with this truck has ever been the same as other v8 dimes so maybe you shouldn't use mine as an example LOL

Look at all this room i made in the tunnel. You v8 s10 guys will appreciate it.

Re: First gen 5.3 swap.

you should have plenty of hood/air filter clearance, i have a 14" x 3" airfilter on mine and the stock hood closes fine

did you mock up the engine/trans together so you can keep your original driveshaft length?, i dropped in the engine/trans, hooked up the driveshaft and where ever the engine ended up is where i bolted it down

also a 99 or newer malibu brake booster will give you way more clearance for the drivers side valvecover/ coil packs, check out the space between the brake booster and coil pack now

Re: First gen 5.3 swap.

I didn't have the tranny in, but because of the two piece driveshaft, i have room to play. Between where the yoke goes into the tranny, and the slip joint behind the carrier bearing i should have enough room to get my driveshaft to work. If not....i will just have to get it lengthed or shortened accordingly.

I was wondering about the coils. Its a damn tight fit in their. Does the malibu booster bolt right up? Its not neccesary though is it? I know others who have been able to fit the truck coils in without a different booster.

I still have to figure out what im going to do for accesorie brackets. Im not running power steering and i dont want the alternator on the driverside so i dont know what im going to do. Any ideas?

without changing the brake booster you will have to re-locate the rear coil,, the malibu brake booster is almost a bolt in swap, just have to put the s-10 rod on the malibu booster(cut off and re-weld 15 min job)

easiset set up is like mine, truck bracket with the bottom 1/2 cut off(manual gear box here also), why do you not want the alt on the drivers side

Re: First gen 5.3 swap.

another thing i just noticed, you are missing a dowel pin on the back of your engine,, make sure you get a new one in there or you will have major trans issues

Re: First gen 5.3 swap.

i have alot, mainly because i dont run a low truck though. The oil pan sticks about an inch below the crossmember, maybe not even that much. You could always build a small skid plate for the oil pan.

When you took the dash out, where were the main bolts to take it out? any hints that might help me (I have to take mine out...)

Re: First gen 5.3 swap.

their are 4 or 5 small screws along the top at the base of the windshield and two large ones on the bottom of the dash, one on each side. Sometimes its still a pain to take it out, just make sure everything is unplugged and be patient. It may take some persuasion.

In this picure you can see a tab above the e-brake pedal, thats where one of the larger bolts goes through on the bottom, its in the same location on the other side.

Re: First gen 5.3 swap.

Got a big 'ol radiator too. This thing is massive (for an s10 anyway) measuring in at 19x31. Im going to have to cut the bottom of the core support out and notch the frame rails.
Its a summit brand radiator but it says Northern right on it, so its a really nice piece for the price.

Re: First gen 5.3 swap.

Here's the broken spring.

Picked up a brand new set of leafs from a friend, returned the polyurethane bushings as these came with new ones in them.

it looks empty, picking up u-bolts tomorrow morning. Should have the rear end in tomorrow morning, then i need to make shock mounts.
