Re: Beginning of 5.3L swap

Saturday I pulled most of the front and hood apart. The radiator is ready to come out too just need to undo a couple more wires.

I may be a day behind with sunday since it looks like it will rain all day. Try and take some pictures soon.

Re: Beginning of 5.3L swap

Alright, got a lot done today.

1. Front end is completely off
2. Wiring is all off except going into the ignition/guages
3. Exhaust is off

Tomorrow i hope to get the engine and tranny pulled and have the tranny get the shift kit put in.

Re: Beginning of 5.3L swap

Ok, got the engine and tranny pulled today. Made a mess in the street but cleaned most of it up.

I'll try and get some pictures tomorrow since I can't do much with the tranny getting its upgrades and will do a little work (headers, intake, seprentine chasing) on my engine i'm putting in.

The wiring harness is now really holding me back though. I had ordered it on january 30th and two things i guess happend to delay the month ship date.

First the specs of my cam and swap were lost somehow and then the building process got behind. So I was hoping it would have been here last week but I guess not, and then was promised a ship date of last friday, which turned into shipping today. This has been the main reason I've gone so slow and hopefully it is here on thursday or friday otherwise i may have to just let my truck sit till school is out.

The computer programming machine he said has been in the shop since february 23, so who knows on that either.

Re: Beginning of 5.3L swap

When you run the ls2 pan are you supposed to take the metal windage tray out that the 5.3 trucks use. I was putting the cam and pan in mine tonight and thought the windage try stayed in until I saw it out in one of his pictures.??

Re: Beginning of 5.3L swap

Alright guys, got a couple of pictures of for you. Obviously most of it is just a mess hah. You can also see the hoopty i'm driving in the background (96 sebring convertible, i haven't had any gay guys try to pick me up yet).

First here is the garage picture. The engine is waiting for the transmission (friday will be done), fuel lines/fittings to show up (next week argghhhh), and the wiring harness that ups has somewhere. The old engine looks like it is being lynched and puked all its tranny fluid into the driveway.

Second here, you can see my engine completely out and how my engine bay looks. Also, picture of the sebring in background.

Re: Beginning of 5.3L swap

Now would be an awesome time to change your control arm bushings. Everything is so open and easy to get to. I just took mine apart today and would have loved all that room.

And if you really want to make it a little more fun to drive, throw in a zq8/z28 steering box.

Re: Beginning of 5.3L swap

Do I need to change those bushings? It is only an 01 with 68,000 miles... Whats the zq8 steering box do? Make the wheels turn faster? I kinda like it how it is.

Re: Beginning of 5.3L swap

I'm at 133k, and mine are pretty worn out. With only 68k, yours should be in good shape.

The zq8 steering box is just a closer ratio steering box similar to the camaro's... so yes it does just that, turn the wheels faster.

I wish mine was more responsive though. You'll want it one day. Go test drive an X at some dealership, then drive a standard, you'll feel the difference.

Got my wiring harness today and fuel fittings. Need the hose and hose fittings to come in and we'll be good. I have a feeling next weekend will be the time stuff goes in.

Re: Beginning of 5.3L swap

Hey guys I'm still trying to figure out a couple things on the fuel line.

I need to know how they fit the stock s10 filter into an An6 style fitting like in this picture and how they did it for the return line. Thanks

Re: Beginning of 5.3L swap

I dont know if this helps or not. I am going to run all stock s10 fuel all the way to the motor. From there I am going to cut the metal line at the motor put on some russell compression fitting to male 6AN then then run rubber fuel hose to the fuel rail that has the russell fuel rail 6AN on it.

here is the russell compression fitting. I am getting a 5/16 one and a 3/8 one

Re: Beginning of 5.3L swap

Thats what I did...all stock hard line to the engine compartment...cut the lines...compression fittings...to 6an...to rubber fittings.....then just ran an aeromotive FPR...works like a charm.

I am using the vette filter, but i have to connect it to the stock fuel lines still somehow. I'm wanting to keep the s10 fuel filter since it is cheaper to replace.

Re: Beginning of 5.3L swap

supposebly stronger cranks, 5.3/4.8 cranks have no 'lightening holes' where the ls1 does to shave some weight, the power output should be noticeable in the low end more then the ls1 because one is geared for trucks where the other is passenger cars

practically same engine...different uses

My 5.3L is a 2004 with 28K miles and was like $950 plus $200 shipping. If i were to get an ls1, i'd assume it would have to have around 80k miles to even be close to the price, that and most of them will have been driven hard.

Supposedly, with the ls2 pan in a blazer, you wont have to notch the crossmember,if you do it wont be very much.

Re: Beginning of 5.3L swap

you know the other day i was talkin to my uncle about using a 4L60E tranny and he suggested , to help compensate for the v8 power, that i look into some cryogenic stuff for it. he said that freezing everything then heating it up then letting cool of would drastically improve the durability of it. he said there are places that can do it for you. i think he is a little nuts but he does race dirt track and hasnt been wrong about anything yet so maybe you want to look into it?

Sounds just like work-hardening something. I wonder if you'd let it cool off slowly or clinch it in water. I'd think the clinching would make it brittle though... I dunno.

Re: Beginning of 5.3L swap

Ahhhhhhhh this damn fuel hose.

I called yesterday and got "It was suppose to have shipped from our supplier and we can't get through because their phone is busy."

Today "They are suppose to call us back and haven't yet. You know though, I'll call them and get back to you."

No call returned or anything...so it was suppose to have shipped march 28th...
