AWD V-8 what is easiest Lt1, Ls1, 5.3l
I am looking into buying up a truck from work for cheap it is a 99 2.2L and the engine and trans are about gone. I want to swap to a AWD bravada drive train using a 4x4 s-10 frame and a v-8 engine. I am thinking the lt1 cause the ls1 is too wide for the frame. Also lt1's are a little cheaper. Would a 5.3L fit or is it just as wide as the ls1?

The Lingenfelter (RIP).. AWD Sonoma was an LS1 with a (I think) denali AWD T-case, and the 4l80E transmission ..
Then again, when you have a shop like that anything is possible.. |

Re: AWD V-8 what is easiest Lt1, Ls1, 5.3l
The 5.3, LS1, 6.0... etc are all Gen III motors, all basically the same motor on the exteriour. Basically like a 305 and 350.
I know with the LS1, the oil pan is the biggest problem, at least IMO. Im not sure if there still would be interferance, since the crossmember isn't there. I know you need a 4x4 pan to clear the axle with a standard sbc, not sure if theres still an issue with the LS1 pan. I'd probably just go with a LT1. They're getting cheaper, and a good ported set of LT1 heads can flow like madd. Oh, and Lingenfelters truck was a 427 TT. ![]() |

Re: AWD V-8 what is easiest Lt1, Ls1, 5.3l
I realize this isn't the for sale section, but I have a 4x4 frame and AWD t-case if anyone is interested. I had planned on doing the AWD LT1 but just ran out of money (and time and patience and will etc...). Sorry to say I never got around to making the mounts up. Nevertheless, it doesn't seem to be that tough, as long as you have a 700r4 ready to handle some abuse!!!

I dont know if anyone on here has a Bravada, maybe they could chime in but I dont think the Bravada is true all wheel drive and it probably wouldnt be a real good candidate for anything performance oriented.

Re: AWD V-8 what is easiest Lt1, Ls1, 5.3l
The Bravada's have similar t-cases to the SyTy's which are AWD all the time. Possibly you are thinking of a Honda CRV? I am 90% sure of that. I had shopped around for a Bravada t-case and found out that they were the same / or similar to the SyTy's. But I ended up getting a SyTy and not having to worry about this problem.

Re: AWD V-8 what is easiest Lt1, Ls1, 5.3l
Well I yahooed it and found a lot of info. The 96+ Bravadas have Smart-Trac and the T-Case is made by New Venture. It detects slippage in the rear wheels and fires a solenoid that engages the front wheels. Sounds like some people have tried swapping them into Sy/Ty's to reduce drag after the launch but they tore them up real quick and is wasnt a direct bolt in.

Re: AWD V-8 what is easiest Lt1, Ls1, 5.3l
Have a look at http://www.usionline.net/hpm.html I've started trolling for parts the AWD deal raises a brow.
The Linkinfelter S10 did use the delani transfer case. From syty.net 40. What kind of transfer case do the trucks have? The BORG WARNER-4472 transfer case is a two-piece aluminum case, chain driven, viscous clutch type transfer case. This produces a system in which all wheel drive is engaged all the time. Torque is transmitted through a planetary gear set which distributes torque at a ratio of 1/3 front 2/3 rear. All wheel drive is automatic and has no external controls. The viscous clutch used in the BW-4472 is a torque distribution device and is nonserviceable. The internal construction of the viscous clutch consists of alternating plates that are connected to the front and rear outputs of the transfer case. The viscous clutch is filled with a high viscosity fluid which flows through slots in the plates. The resistance to sheer causes the plates to transmit torque. The identificaton tag is an aluminum tag attached under one of the self tapping case bolts. The tag provides the Borg Warner part number, the General Motors part number, serial number and the build date. The information on the tag is necessary when servicing this transfer case. If the tag is removed or becomes dislodged during service operations, every attempt should be made to keep the identification tag with the unit. |
