Anyone with 4L80Es???
I was just wondering how much massaging of the trans tunnel you needed with the 4L80E...And any other advice/tips you could provide with your use of a 4L80E...I know the 80E is heavier and longer with a different splined output shaft...and different gear ratios...For a normal daily driver I don't suppose there a lot of terrible downsides to one over a 60E...But a stock one should hold as well as a built 60E from what I've read....Correct???

Re: Anyone with 4L80Es???
acehaag has one i believe, i think he simply hammered the body seam and it fit ok. he had long tubes also, i think. yea it is heavier (roughly 50 lbs IIRC), and the first gear ratio is not the best (2.48:1), but it is strong in stock form, and can be built for serious power levels. i would probably go with a built 60e, i am sold on blackx's experience with his...

Re: Anyone with 4L80Es???
Black X has had great results with his, but the 80e can take more power if built correctly.

Re: Anyone with 4L80Es???
Of course anything that is built properly will hold up and last...But what I am debating is buy a built 4L60/65E or just go with a stock 4L80E from the yard...

Re: Anyone with 4L80Es???
it seems the issue most people have is the weight, not necessarily getting it to fit. youre already going to need a new driveshaft right? so that wont matter...not sure on the trans crossmember though. the 80e might be a good idea if you plan on doing anything major down the road.

Re: Anyone with 4L80Es???
Well apparently BRP's crossmember fits the 60E and 80E just have to flip it for the 80E...(There is a seperate one for the T56) And since it is longer it will help with my plans of doing a one piece shaft. ( By shortening the shaft and helping with clearance issues. )

Re: Anyone with 4L80Es???
If you're going with the yard tranny I'd plan on freshing it up.
I have both a 65 and an 80, I think the big noticable differance is the weight. I'm going to use the 80 for my Safari van swap, when I get the time to do it. There's plenty of room under there for it |

Re: Anyone with 4L80Es???
How much more does the pan hang down than the stock 60Es...Would a "deep pan" for the 80E be "deeper" than a 60E "deep pan"?? I am in no way a transmission guy so sorry if that question sounded stupid....

Re: Anyone with 4L80Es???
dont hold me to this but i thought it was just a tad wider and longer, not necessarily "taller". in other words, i think the pan is at the same level as the 60e pan. do you already have a deep pan on your truck?
EDIT: http://www.tciauto.com/Products/TechInfo/trans_dims.asp some other dimension info there, but i cant find a "height"... Last edited by Kampz69 : 10-01-2009 at 07:40 PM. |

Re: Anyone with 4L80Es???
Did the 4.3 Vin "W" Auto come stock with a deep pan?? I had thought the 80E was longer by more than that..Hmmm....That one guy said just everything to control his 4L80E was $1300!!! WTF?!?!

Re: Anyone with 4L80Es???
youd have to look at your pan to tell, it seems it was one of those no rhyme or reason GM things, some had them some didnt. i think the 4wds all had them, but ive read that some 4wds didnt...if your pan is completely flat then its the shallow pan. the deep pans have a bump in the pan after the crossmember to allow it to fit, if that makes sense...

It looks deep to me...The bottom of the pan is even with the bottom of the trans crossmember...

Re: Anyone with 4L80Es???
so your pan dips down then? like its shallower above the crossmember? if so then yes thats a deep pan.

Re: Anyone with 4L80Es???
Well none of it goes above the crossmember but it's about 2.5" tall and then towards the rear near the crossmember it gets a shallower for about a length of 2"? ..... I forgot to ask why you originally asked...

just trying to determine if you have a deep pan already installed so you have something to compare the 80e pan to.

Re: Anyone with 4L80Es???
I have an 80e in my Typhoon. It took just a bit of bending of the front lip at the firewall to allow the trans to fit. I also had to use a custom crossmember.

Re: Anyone with 4L80Es???
I got a 4L80E in my '00 Blazer, took no modifications getting it in there, other then having to make the crossmember. My truck makes 977rwhp with 370LSx and PT88 @ 22lbs boost.

Re: Anyone with 4L80Es???
Still on stock 8.5" rear with 3.42s and a detroit truetrak.
The full size elbow doesnt clear the hood even with all the reinforcements cut out. I ended up buying a 2" cowl hood. |

Re: Anyone with 4L80Es???
Nothing else is done, stock axels and nothing welded
The truck doesnt leave hard, and im running drag radials on stock rims. Now, when im going to be spraying out of the hole to spool the turbo and put a tire on it, then it may be a different story ![]() |
