Anybody else done the 1LE brake swap on their LS/LQ?

I just got done installing my QA1 coilovers, Global West upper control arms and my 1LE 12" disc brake conversion (if you aren't familiar you can check it out on Global Wests site) with stainless steel braided lines but I wanted to ask you guys a question.

To any of you that have upgraded your brake system did you have any issues with the small bore of the stock master cylinder? My '98 started as a 2.2l and after swapping out the brakes the pedal leaves something to be desired. I think it might have to do with the small bore of the master cylinder. I am currently running a 4.3 brake booster (smaller than my 2.2l booster for space saving) and an early 90's master cylinder with a proportioning valve (no abs here) I was just curious if there are any master cylinders that came stock on GM cars/trucks with a slightly larger bore, or if I have to go aftermarket?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

thats my plan

on my 99 2.2 i ran c5 front and 98+ rear calipers and it seemed to work out ok....pedal did have to be pushed a little further than before but during braking it seemed much more solid. I now have the same setup on my 01 4.3 ext cab and it feels much better than the original brakes...it actually stops!

Yeah I was noticing the same pedal feel in mine after going with the bigger brakes and braided lines, still stops like an SOB I just wasn't sure if there was a similar master cylinder with a bigger bore to get the pedal to start engaging the brakes a little earlier. Thanks guys.

A smaller diameter master will have more ppressure at the caliper, and larger bore will have more fluid. You want more pressure.

bigger brakes require more volume because the pistons in the calipers are larger so a master cylinder with a bigger bore is needed.

If you get Wilwood 6 piston and 4 piston front and rear setup, they recommend a 7/8 master cylinder, so that would throw that reasoning out the window.

A 7/8 master with what stroke? If the stroke on the master cylinder is longer that will compensate for the smaller bore size and give a softer pedal feel. If you want the brakes to react faster to pedal movement you need a larger master cylinder bore.

Re: Anybody else done the 1LE brake swap on their LS/LQ?

All of thier tandems have a 1.10" stroke. You dont need very much volume on discs, becuase the calipers are not moving as far as they would as compared to drum cylinders. This also is why these huge calipers have shims for the pads as they wear down.

Will a large bore work? Yes. But a smaller bore, with HIGHER pressure at the caliper will work tremendously better. Why else would people be doing a hydroboost swap?
