If cost is an issue, this swap isn't for you. The 350 would be cheaper from the research I did and have seen.

Some folks have done the LSx swap fairly cheap. There are a couple of carb'ed 5.3's on here as well. I have roughly $8k into my swap and its just a stock 5.3L. But when I did it, I wanted to do it right the first time.

What are your goals for the build?
MPG?
Limited Budget?
HP?
Used for commuting, hauling, or hauling azz?

so true the 350 would be cheaper. . . definitely the 5.3 would be more efficient when it comes down to mpg with a good tune & etc.

I agree with everyone else. The 350 is cheaper. But there is nothing better then the reliability and comfort of the 5.3. I am a GM technician and you could not give me a old school push rod motor. Not to mention you will make around 50 to 75 horsepower more with the 5.3.
