Re: RoadGRATER

so it seams like you guys say the roadgrater is a good kit but it does have its downfalls it looks like. if the ART roadgrater is one of the best what is one that you guys who lay it out and ride real low use with no probs?

i was thinking about going with the Roadgrater but also hoping the i could get one from SD thats just as good but cheaper. does such a beast exsist? or is the Roadgrater the best bang for the buck. i can wel so its no prob there

Re: RoadGRATER

Quick question for you guys. Does the driveshaft need to be shortened 1" for this kit like it does for the SD kits?

Re: RoadGRATER

If you've got a standard cab, the driveshaft does need to be shortened an inch or 2. I asked ART and they said it didn't but they're full of crap. I had to change my pinion seal and I almost couldn't get the driveshaft off the yoke.....big prybar.

My RG doesn't lift very high. I'm running 245/40R18s in the back and I had to put a 1" spacer on bag mount along with 1" longer shocks and it still barely clears the tire.

every truck is different there are two standcab owners i have talked to and they did not need it shortened, but a small notch needs to be cut.

They say they didn't...I didn't think I did either until I had to change the pinion seal and almost couldn't get the driveshaft out. When I installed it, everything went together fine. The people that say they didn't have to shorten their's will most likely find out they should have.

Re: RoadGRATER

Its hit and miss on the s10s, my father has a 2000 and mine is a 03 we both had them drop zq8+ 2'' spindles and 3'' blocks, he had to have his shortened 11/16's of a inch and mine was fine. There is a big thread about it, search might find it i dont know but some do some dont.

Re: RoadGRATER

damn right, bringing back the dead lol. but anyways XMBEDIR it dont matter about about the size of the rims really, its more about the tires.... 26-27 inch tall tire will layour and get full lift with it. smaller tires will still lay but less lift..

but on another subject TONY have yall thought about maybe reworking the RG kit to lay on a 22?? i mean i iknow you can get tires for 22s that are around 27" tall but id like to run a lil bit bigger tire (somehting a lil bit more the 2.5" side wall)....... but just throwing that out there, lol.

Re: RoadGRATER

it really doesnt matter but here ya go

Air Ride Technologies

"The S10 RoadGRATER™ system is designed to be used with at least a 26" tall tire (275/35-18) and is capable of setting the frame on the ground with up to a 28" tall tire (275/35-20)."

Re: RoadGRATER

I hear people talking about not getting much lift out of the RG, but how much is "not much"? I have a 03 xtra cab right now that I will be ordering a RG for by middle of next month, I am running 245-45-17 tires all around. The truck is lowered 4" in the front 5" rear. Will I get the lift to get back to that ride hight atleast?

Re: RoadGRATER

when i was doing my research it seemed that you will only be able to get the frame 6-7" off the ground at full lift, thats not enough for me so i decided to go with the 5 link

Re: RoadGRATER

Ah thanks. I have about 7" frame clearance now so that would not be too bad. I would go with the five link, but I can't weld. If SD would make a complete bolt in three link they would rake the money in hand over fist.

They are very close to having a full bolt on kit, they have bolt in notches, bolt in 3 link al you need to weld is it the shock bar, and bag mounts upper and lower. I agree though if they had a 100% bolt on kit they would make a killing in the business(more then they allready do). I also cant weld, but I know people who can, i used to be convinced that i wanted the roadgrater but i researched and decided its worth it to get the SD 5 link and pay someone to come weld the parts in that need to be welded(notches, shock bar, and rear lift bar tabs)

Re: RoadGRATER

That my problem, no welding ability and no one around to do it. Oh well the RG will have to do I guess. I found a shop about 2 hours from me that would build and weld in a 4 link for me for $1600, but I got a bad feeling from them. They felt a little shady. Plus they said it would atleast take a month to do. I thought both those cases were a little extreme.

the RG isnt a 5 link, its basically the same thing as the air bar, a 3 link, but it also has the notches built into it. Your airbar gets more lift because it doesnt get as low as the RG does. The RG has like 6-7" of suspension travel(i think) and i bet the air bar is similiar, but the air bar your allready starting like 3 or 4" off the ground, so it will get you higher, but it doesnt have more "lift" (actual suspension travel from aired out, to air up). if ya catch my drift?

Re: RoadGRATER

just installed the roadgrater on my truck its nice if you dont know anyone that welds but if u do a 5 link is definately what you need but i mean it rides good and the lift is ok. who needs big lift anyways it gets me over big speed bumps and im able to get up my steep driveway so thats really all the lift that matters to me.

Re: RoadGRATER

I know I'm diggin' it up again, but I hadn't driven the '03 in a couple months cause I've been waiting for my new ATS spindles and I'm in the middle of trying to sell my house.

I had the truck parked at my in-laws house for over 2 months....I just moved it back home the other day and realized the bushings in the RG are SHOT. The axle was already offset the left 1", but now the bushings are totally junk and it's sitting about 2 or 3" to the left. Not to mention my shocks are junk.

I'm really hating the RG right now. I wish I had gone with something from SD. When I get done with the fron suspension I'm gonna take the bed off and redo the rear. I'm thinking I'll weld in the notches, order new link bars w/ super pivot bushings from SD, dump the rear shock/bag mount bar and mount the bags on top of the axle.

I've had the RG for 2 years and probably 30k miles....I'm over it.
