Re: airbar install

Well I juts finished my rear airbar mod to lay out. Check the pictures lays frame in the rear and front too. I relocated my rear shocks way out to end of axle and mounted them straight up and down to help with wheel hop, I felt the rear shocks were positioned to far in towards center of axle helping aid the teetertotter effect. Let me know what ya think.

Re: airbar install

Ok so here it is,
2 inch lowering blocks
raised gas tank crossmember
2 x 2 inch tubing welded to diff bracket, plus made 2 brackets using the 2x2 tubing welded to the top of diff bracket as you can see.
c-notch 3 inch or so
Reuse clamshell welded to crossmember
relocate rear shocks made shims and brackets for lower bars.
A welder
Lots of Beer - Labatts!!!!
I basically did this to show everyone that it is possible and I have not driven it yet so as far as wheel hop I don't know yet. I will keep ya posted. To make this kit lay out in the rear I have less than $150.00 I bought my crossmember on craigslist $90.00 a 2lb spool of welding wire($20.00), 2x2 tubing was $10-$15 from a metal supply, some bolts and there ya go.

Re: airbar install

Bythe way a few months ago I had never welded anything and I bought my welder on Craigslist for $100.00 new (fluxcore) I practiced first and then started to build. My father inlaw has been building rods for 50 years so I had him inspect my welding skills to make sure they were storng and good and when I was good enough then I started welding my stuff. I started this in November and worked on it after work when the kids went to bed.... Thats my story I will putmore when I get the bed on for you guys hope you enjoy! I may start a build thread but not sure yet

I wanted to make the instant center more towards the front of the truck instead of behind the instant center is still behind the rear of the truck but the angle of the wishbone is not as severe as it was plus it helped my pinion angle.

Re: airbar install

I am sure if you did not want to weld the diff bracket you can buy the roadgrater one I think it is taller but not shure. I tried to gain info about it from ART but never received a response.

Re: airbar install

I want to be able to lay frame and do a burn out without any wheel hop this is my goal if I drive it and there is none then I will post a vid to prove it is possible but as of now I am not sure when I get home tonight I will drive the truck.

Re: airbar install

Is that a comp in a Army Box? It might overheat in there... They need airspace around the head for cooling. I would relocate it and keep the box for something else.

Yeah you are right it gets real warm it was an idea and I have 3 ammo boxes I think it looks cool I may cut the sides off and use it for a mount only. BTW I am using a compressor I got from work off a Mercedes Benz GL class Someone threw it away and it works great.

Re: airbar install

it got me thinking... u think it would be possible to change the diff. bracket, the wishbone, and get the raised tank member to lay? instead of messing with the old wishbone and having to weld here and there, just get a new 3 link assembly to run.....

Re: airbar install

I thought the same thing after I did it but I think the diff will ht the floor and keep it from laying out. I was considering a SD wb and diff bracket or welding the WB to the axle tubes with a custom WB Just an idea. anyway yes the leaf brackets are laying on the ground. I basically did this to prove to my self it can be done.

Re: airbar install

ummm i shot an email towards ricky's way from sd.com asking bout just swaping the diff., the wishbone, and doing the raised member if it would work, and he said no it wouldn't do to the bag brackets/placement; he mentioned it doesnt allow it to lay where they are placed with just swapping out what i wanted to swap out, so that is out of the books lol....

I asked the same question before and I got " it will not work" and that was it. so at least u know why this is another reason why I did it as well.

no luck yet cant find another cossmember to rob but what were tryin to do is cut the crossmember in the center and reweld it higher so that the clamshell bracket is up higher and the drivshaft dosent hit o yea another question can i change the bags out to like re 7s if needed? instead of the firestones

Re: airbar install

i believe u can but why would ya? the firestone sleeve bags ride so nice... if u do do the re7s i believe u have to drill out the bag bracket to bolt up the bag...just alittle modifying

gotcha... well like i said i think all that needs to be done from what i have read is just drilling out the bag plates so the bags can be accepted/lineup
