How To: Headliner Designs

Ok I told you guys I would get this HOw to up sometime soon. Here it is.

The First step is to take your old headliner out of the truck, this is for the ext cab, not sure about the regular cab. It involves 3 screws around each sunvisor mount. 1 in each part the sunvisor gets held into. there are 2 small bolts on the grab handle over the passenger side door. 1 screw in the coat hanger clip thing on the ext cab, and 1 screw on the passenger side in the flip out latch by the ceiling. The last part u need to remove is the light housing on the back wall. It has 2 samll bolts holding it there.

Once u have the headliner out you need to remove the cloth that is currently on it. Just start at a corner and slowly work your way around the whole thing until it all comes free.

Next you need to cut out of 1/2" foam whatever design it is that you want to be on your headliner. For mine i chose a bowtie with flames coming off of it.

Next you need to center where your gonna put your design at. I chose the middle of my headliner so the next thing to do was spray the foam and headliner area where u are going to attach it with 3m adhesive spray and let it sit for about 2 minutes, or until it gets tacky.

Ok now that the foam is securely in place you can start to cover the headliner with your material of choosing, I chose to use just regular headliner material i got at a local fabric store, but anyway start by putting more adhesive on both the material and the headliner itself and let it sit for 2 minutes. Only work with small areas at a time, or u will get it all messed up. Make sure u push really hard on the areas surrounding your design, so it will attach, this may require you to press on it for a few seconds to get it to hold, but once u get it held on, it wont come off.

Now that all of that is done, it is time to take a pair of good sharp scissors and cut off all of the excess material around the edges, take your time and dont Fvck up, or it will show.

Now that is it all that is left to do is reinstall the headliner and enjoy your creation. Not that hard to do, and should only take you half a day or so to complete.

One more note, if you get any of the glue on the good side of the headliner, dont fret, use 3m adhesive remover and it will come right off, this also works extremely well if you get it on your hands, it takes it off great

sweet!! i may have to do my headliner over now!! LOL where did you get the foam??? And also....... that 3m adhesive remover you spoke of.... only works if its fresh, or will it still work after it dries?? Cause i have a small spot in the back corner with some yellowish kinda crap from too much glue that seaped through!

only thing i have a rpoblem with doing, is all the edges around the desigin, when you press hard, will it fit to the edges, or do you gotta work the edges with your fingers and crap?

is the original headliner just glued on? or is it streched around to the back?

it is just glued on, it's stretched around to the back by about an inch in some places, wherever it was stretched at i stretched it there

The adhesive remover worked 2 days after mine was dry cause i found a spot i missed, so if it doesn't work right away, they say let it sit for a minute and work it's way in.

I got the foam along with the headliner at jo-ann fabrics, any fabric store will have it. The wholeproject cost about 35 bucks to do.

it is glued down in some way...they can't just stretch it around the back, it wouldn't go around the contour of the headliner if it was just wrapped/stretched

it pulls off real easy.... after i took it off, i used a wire brush and drill to get all the stuck foam off the liner......

yeah it's just sprayed with the adhesive and pushed together, it hold itself there, i didn't have any foam left on my headliner, mine all pulled off with the carpet, gues i got lucky, i've done other headliners and used a flat razorblade to take all the old foam off, it's not that big a deal to do, but it takes some time

I've never done this but I wanted to add that on one of the TNN car shows, can't remember which one, they were doing door panels in flames and recommended that when you cut out the foam design cut the edge at a 45 degree angle. They said the liner material will form around the design better. Yours looks good, very nice work.

yeah i saw that to, but they were using vinyl so yeah if u wanna use vinyl cut at a 45* angle, i almost forgot about that , i believe it was horsepower tv that did that, good call victor star

One thing that works well for pressing the material around the edges of the form is to use a small firm rubber roller and work the edges.

Great job man...it looks great. My headliner is good still, but i'll probably do this whenever I redo my interior. I am thinking about getting rid of my sunvisors though...any idea how I could fill the lil pockets they have for them to lay into? It looks to be about 1/4" deep or so. Would foam work for this too? Again, great job and thanks for sharing!
