weird tranny issues? or?

well, i wheel my rig at my buddy's house, pulling cars around in a field, and over jumps and stuff... my transmission is acting really weird... ill be driving, doing any speed, and the transmission will sound like it kinda half downshifts (the rpm's go slightly higher) and the speedometer reads exactly half the speed your going. doesnt matter what speed, its half.

has anyone encountered this before?

Re: weird tranny issues? or?

The speedometer going whaco is kinda odd. Its picking up the signal from the output shaft so it would need to slow to slow the speedometer and the truck would also slow down.
But whe you feel the tranny shift slightly between gears it could be the TCC. A bad temp sensor for the computer will cause the TCC to go off and on.

ok, interesting.. where is the TCC?

i also noticed just like.. an hour ago when i went to get the mail, i was driving home, and the truck started to lose power... so i put my foot more into the throttle, and it almost stalled out... then i slammed the throttle to the floor, and she downshifted and took off... but it was really weird...

Torque Converter Clutch. Maybe it is locking up and staying locked as you went for the mail. You could try to unplug the 4 way plug on the right side of the tranny about center of the pan next to the TV cable and see if it still runs the same.

Re: weird tranny issues? or?

im not trying to hijack this thread but since we are on the subject. When my truck is parked and i rev the engine to like 4000 / 4500rpms my digi. speedo begins to read mph....ive seen it go up to 7 mph parked.....what do ya think could cause that......not a big deal jus wonderin?

Also when in overdrive on the highway over 55 and everything HOT ( never cold) and i give it a little more throttle to speed up like to pass i get a terrible tremble...i can tell its in the trans cuz when it begins to tremble ill give it jus a lil bit more throttle and it will down shift.....it was doin it awhile back and i changed the fluid but its doin it again only 10,000 on this fluid all highway....the only gear it does this in is OD at the specified time

SORRY FOR THE HIJACK MAN!

was 1L low, but that wasnt the problem... still does it... i havent noticed it do the half speed thing since though... but i doubt being a hair low on fluid would cause it to do that...

Re: weird tranny issues? or?

is this the right plug for the TCC?
cause i unplugged it and drove home, and i dont think it once went into overdrive, but the speedo was stuck at half the speed the whole time. didnt even try to read correctly...

Re: weird tranny issues? or?

Thats the plug for the Torque Converter Clutch. That is what I suspected was giving the feeling of "half shift" from it locking and unlocking. Possibly caused by a faulty temp sensor.
The speed buffer or DRAC may also have an issues causing the speedo to not work properly.

Re: weird tranny issues? or?

The VSS is the output on the tranny tailshaft. The speedo is moving so I would think that the VSS is fine.
The speed buffer and DRAC are one in the same. It just changed names like the 700R4 became the 4L60.
The temp sensor for the ECM is located near the T-stat housing. It should have two wires, one yellow and one black. When that is not ready proper you can get those in and out half shift like feelings and not even have a SES light on.

that sounds like it could be it... ill swap it out with the new one i have on my other 4.3L and see how she goes...

the DRAC should be fine, it was working perfect in my s10 pickup before.

and as for the VSS, does it either work or not work? or can it like... slowly die? and if it does die, what happens? just no speedometer?

Re: weird tranny issues? or?

The VSS is just picking up pulses from a reluctor. Just like the reluctors and sensors for ABS. Those can give false readings if teeth break off the ring or from lots of dirt. I can't see that happening inside a tail shaft housing.
What did not click for me in the first place was your "Custom Pinned" DRAC.
If you think about it, everything works fine at some point in time. That does not mean it will always work fine.

ill grab my other 2 DRAC modules, pin em correctly and then put em in and see what happens...

my custom pinned one just has those computer jumper pins on it, and you slide those jumpers over the pins to set the right combo. its really cool haha!

Oh you installed the small dip switches instead of a jumper to adjust for tire size and rear gear ratio. Maybe the solder connection is bad or the dip switch turned too dip shit.
