Lightbulb DIY: rear window tinting

Okay i got really bored this weekend and decided to tint my rear window. It overall was a pretty easy job but let me tell you, you do need 2 people to make this task easy. okay i am including all the steps and items u need to make this happen without spending over 100$ to get tint done to ur truck..

1. Purchase a 2' x 5' piece of tint any % u want. Can be found at almost every hardware store. they usually sell in 25' packages but that way u can do ur friends and charge them too.

2. Tools needed include; a razor, a empty spray bottle, baby shampoo, water, a drip plastic cover if u dont want ur carpet to get kinda wet, and a credit card.

3. Clean your window completely so no smudges dirt or grease is on the window.

4. first start out by cutting out a template for your back window using a 2'x5' sheet of say cardboard or paper. place the paper on the back window and cut with a razor along the edges inside the rubber piece of ur window.

5. bring out your sheet of tint and lay it upside down so it rolls under and doesnt cause you any stress. cut out the tint with a razor or scissors to match the template. i used my tailgate to lay the tint flat and the template of the window on top of it and matched the tint to the template.

6. mix 1/2 baby shampoo and 1/2 water in any size spray bottle. make it a good mix so when u spray it soap suds come out along with water.

7. start by spraying your window inside, douse it with the baby spray so its completly soaked making the tint easier to move around when applied.

8. cut a little piece off the corner and try to get the razor under the first layer of tint to peel off the plastic cover that protects the glue on the other side of the tint.

9. peel slowly so you dont get any crinkles and you dont get mad at yourself when the tint sticks together. peel all the way off and have somone hold one side and you hold the other end. now spray the tint completly with the baby spray. it will start to straighten out and not roll anymore because its wet.

10. have the first person hold the top and go through the door and the other person go to the other door grabbing the ends and then place it on the window.

11. cut out the edges so it will fit on the window with no overlay. then press down and take out ur credit card and start pushing out all the bubbles and as much baby spray as u can dont press to hard in the beginning or it will just move the tint. it takes about 5-10 minutes to get all the bubbles out its easy. once it starts to dry the bubbles will stop coming back and you can start to get it completly flat.

12. let it sit for about 30 minutes and then wipe it down with windex to get it clean.

i did this on my 96 s10 rear window and it turned out very well for my first time tinting

any questions just pm me and ill answer the best of my ability thanks!

Looks good, only thing i'll say is be careful using a credit card, as it can scratch the tint if you push too hard. Squeegee works well (made for tinting...not for cleaning windows)

Also, you mentioned that the tint was sliding around on you, when you first started squeegeeing it. That's probably because you have SO much shampoo in your tinting solution. For a full spray bottle i only used 10 or so DROPS of soap.

Looks like it came out good and that's what matters.

Glad you did it yourself much cheaper!
