Border Patrol... Opinions?
What is everyone's opinion on the border patrol?
I go to take the entrance test on April 9th. I've been studying alot on the preparation manual and have started a weight loss workout routine. Fortunately the post I'm on right now has an indoor swimming pool so when I get off work I can go directly to the pool and do laps... If I get on I've picked South texas, around Laredo as my station... opinions welcome! |

Re: Border Patrol... Opinions?
The thing about throwing rocks is, a 1lb rock thrown by an average male with aggression, that rock has around 225 lbs of pressure per square inch. Lamens terms it's going to hurt. A standard 9mm bullet has about 250 lbs of pressure per square inch. This means that both the 1lb rock and a 9mm bullet have about the same amount of pressure. Not to mention, if the rock does hit you in your head and you loose conciousness or are dissoriented by the attack, it leaves you open for the illegal immigrant to get to your duty belt. A.K.A your a dead man. I'm still confused on the who reason why there is so much controversy over Border Patrol Agents. |

Re: Border Patrol... Opinions?
A friend of a friend is training at the FLETC in Artesia, New Mexico... I can't remember how far he's in, but 5 weeks rings a bell.
Sounded like any other police academy, but he said that the focus on immigration-related laws and the eight solid weeks of learning Spanish is intense. Artesia is the middle of butt**** nowhere, just so you know. Last edited by Terracoma : 03-15-2009 at 02:29 AM. |

I would do Corrections at a Detention facility before I ever even thought about applying for the BP/ICE....but thats me.
Look into Park Ranger under the Dept. of the Interior - National Parks Service and/or the Army Corps of Engineers. Way more fun and you dont go to prison for doing your job. |

Re: Border Patrol... Opinions?
Sonomanator, I don't have any advice for you. I've just been studying my preparation manual after applying with them online. I've heard alot of good advise on www.Honorfirst.com so I would go there if you have any specific questions. I wanted to go work for the BP because I wanted to see a lot of action. I wanted to be in the middle of it. And the money is really good as well.
I'm used to long hours ( I work 12s as a North Metro Atlanta Supervisor for a security company right now) so that won't be a new thing to me. The heat however, I was born and raised in Georgia, so I'm not sure how the "dry heat" will be out there. I'll just start running with a cammel back on to add some weight and get used to it. |

it only takes about 2 weeks for someone to be fully acclimated to any weather conditions...Iraq is way hotter and we wear way more gear and do way more strenuous activity..you'll be fine...
