Re: air assault

Good luck on the final road march.

Pay attention during sling-load instruction. Thats what gets most people at the end.

Re: air assault

From another forum...

Quote:
Great school to attend my friend. Attention to detail is a MUST. It is not a significantly hard course however it is challenging at times. Make sure you follow your packing list to a "t"....any missing or wrong items and you will get booted. Zero day is a long day. Out in formation at 0dark30 for inspection of gear then the obstacle course. After the obstacle course is a PT test in boots.

If you make it through all that, which I am sure you will, the next few days aren't too bad. Mostly classes on aircraft and combat air assault ops. Sling load phase was where we lost alot of people. This is where attention to detail is key. They will set up a sling load on a few different items (A22 bag, howitzer, cargo net, and a humvee) and it is your job to find 3 "gigs" (things wrong with them) on the item. If you can't find them within the time limit....well they kindly give you one more shot with new "gigs" but if you still don't get them...they kick you out.

Rappel phase gets really fun. You will learn all the styles of rappelling. If you know how to tie a swiss seat correctly you will be ahead of the game. Get ready for alot of nut pain because you will spend 90% of the days in rappel phase wearing your swiss seat. There is really only one mistake you can make during rappel phase and that is a safety infraction such as a fatal hookup (you will learn what it is and be taught not to do it) or being unsafe on the tower/blackhawk. Rappelling out of the blackhawk is fun but I had fast roped many times prior so it was different from what I was used to.

Last day is a 12 mile forced road march with full pack. You must complete it in 3 hours or less. 3hours and one second...you fail...they will kick you out. Lost alot of people on the road march. They inspect your ruck/molle after the road march so don't try and pack light...they will check and make sure you have EVERY item on the packing list.

Other than that the PT is nothing major...just a few road marches leading up to the 12 mile and a few timed runs. The rest of the days are muscle failure. Good luck and pay attention to detail. Follow all commands from the rappel master and wave to "Bob" on the way down. Any more questions feel free to ask. I graduated class 01-03 Fort Drum.
