uh oh...another new guy....
Hi all. Just thought I would post my dilemma here before I go crazy google-ing.
I have a 94 SS that I picked up for next to nothing, its in getting the body worked over now, but anyways, seeing as the old 4.3 has 320,000 KMS on it (ya..Im canadian eh?) I have decided to swap a V8 in to it. my question is this.... has anyone here done one, and what did you do for guages? I have done a handful of the older model trucks, and they are quite simple...I just dont know what to do about speedo's etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Re: uh oh...another new guy....
Why not just put another 4.3 in it and keep it original?

Re: uh oh...another new guy....
where is the fun in that?
it still runs just fine, I got this truck from an older gentleman who took really good care of it. I just figured that seeing as I have little interest in making this one a daily driver, it would be tons more fun with a hot 406 I built. |

Re: uh oh...another new guy....
4.3s arent boring they got some pop.....and its an ss! It will be hard to get the gauges to work right because its an ss, so it has the tach and everything, It would be easier to put a 4.3 in it. If it runs fine, I would just keep it in if I were you, 4.3s will run forever, I know somene who has over 600,000 miles and it still runs like brand new.
You also might want to ask in the v8 forum, they can probably tell you what you need to do Last edited by SSfan48 : 05-22-2007 at 10:14 PM. |

Re: uh oh...another new guy....
how about a 425 hp 406? Think I am going to just remove the cluster, and make a frame for autometer gauges and call it a day. seems like the easiest way to go. |

Re: uh oh...another new guy....
I can't believe you guys are telling him a 4.3 is the way to go. I'd go with a V8 if I had the patience to do a swap like that. I work on cars everyday, and I hate the shit. HAHA
Swap it out man !!!! Post tons of pics. |

Re: uh oh...another new guy....
wow. thanks for all the responses. I have decided to go with the 406 and seeing as its not going to be a daily driver, the ever faithful TH350. Once the machine gets home from paint, I will start taking photos for everyone.

Re: uh oh...another new guy....
My wifes S10ss has a 5.7 tpi in it. It was alot of work doing the swap, you can use all your stock guages and 4l60e trans (highly recommended) if you get a custom wiring harness built. I used choiceautowiring.com in Saskatoon. Are you going with carb or efi.

Re: uh oh...another new guy....
well...no update real update on progress to mention. The truck got sidelined at the bodyshop for a while, so I continued my collecting of parts and exploring all the options. in light of the fact that the truck is a real SS, I have decided to remove the stock gauges carefully and remove the wiring harness, just in case I decide to restore it in the future. So, as it stands, its going to be a carbed 406 and TH350. I was considering the 700R4, but as I have little interest in commuting to and from work in this truck, the fourth gear isn't that big a deal.
I did pick up just about everything I "think" I need to do the swap plus a few bonus items (the 2" x 4"drop kit) In the meantime, here is a shot of the thing sitting next to a 40's fargo waiting for its turn in the booth. Thanks again everyone for your input! |
