ss thermostat question
hey guys,
just bought a 96 s10 ss and i've got a question about the thermostat. not sure exactly what temperature thermostat is on it but i would guess around a 210* thermostat, b/c the truck runs @ ~210* when running around town but when i pull a small boat it gets on up above 210 but not in the red. i noticed alot of people have put on 160* thermostat on their ss's. can anybody tell me what the purpose or reason is behind this, is the 160* thermo something i should check into more? thanks for any advice or information. Re: ss thermostat question
The 160* tstat causes the engine to run cooler. If you don't reprogram the ECM for the lower temp, the fuel and spark tables are set wrong and performance and mileage will sufer a little. I've got a 160* in my '97 and reprogrammed the ECM...didn't notice any difference other than running cooler and not getting real hot for the heater in the winter.

Re: ss thermostat question
what's involved in reprogramming the ECM and about what would having that done cost?
any reason not to go ahead and put in the 160* thermo opposed to the 180*? and i'm definitely in the south, lower alabama, 110 heat index right now ha. |

it probably has an OEM stat which is a 195, programming the oem would be good for some purposes...
