Windows Vista
So I just installed Vista to try it out and so far I like what it going on, but what is the deal with my hard drive light staying on. Since I got it installed the OS is been going at it and it just doesnt make sense. Is there anything I can check or turn off? There is only 40 processes running. And going back to XP is not what I am looking to do right now.
Thanks |

Re: Windows Vista
On my HP laptop DV5000 there is a hard drive access indicator that lights up when the harddrive is being used. When I had XP and linux on here it only lit up when opening programs and every now and then. But with Vista it seems to stay on pretty much the whole time, even when I am not doing anything.

Re: Windows Vista
That's because with Vista, there is almost always HDD activity. Another reason why I hate it.

Re: Windows Vista
it's funny you mention that. I've had vista ultimate on my home pc that i installed myself and don't seem to have a problem with the HDD access constantly running. now on a couple of my family's comps that they bought from the store, the laptop seems to do it and their desktop doesn't. I thought maybe it was just some of the pre-installed software that I hadn't had a chance to uninstall yet, but since you said you installed it yourself now i'm thinking maybe it's just a laptop thing?

Re: Windows Vista
Its the indexing feature of vista.......yeah it sucks because its always looking at the HDD and getting stuff ready for a search. I guess it would be handy if all you did all day was search for random files. But fortunately I know where most files are that I need access to are located at.

Re: Windows Vista
I have 1,500gb of space on my machine with around half of it used and mine is never causing any noticable issue and I create files all day long because I am a designer. |

Re: Windows Vista
It's not doing it so much now, but Vista sure does take a long time to boot up. I will probably go back to XP here shortly.

Re: Windows Vista
My x64 Vista Ultimate partition boots and runs quicker than my XP partition. Doesn't help that my XP is only 32 bit though.
Although, it seems that my x64 version of server 2003 boots slower than my x64 version of server 2008, but that's because my 2008 isn't a DC |
