What kind of cable would I need?

What I want to do is display video from say a dvd player onto a computer monitor.

I just need the yellow RCA video cable to connect to the PC monitor (a standalone setup)

RCA to VGA or something?

Re: What kind of cable would I need?

S-video is the likely option. Dvd players don't normally have the VGA (blue) connector so you'll be forced to do it that way. Computer monitors normally only have a DVI(white) or VGA(blue) connection. Occasionally they'll have an S-video connection, but its kind of rare.

If it's an older computer monitor, you'll likely only have the option of a vga cable (blue multi-pin connector with two screws on the side), and you'll need a connector like this.

Hope this helps.

Re: What kind of cable would I need?

Basically whut I'm wanting to do is, hook the output of my DVR (for security cameras) up to an extra computer monitor. So I don't have to leave my 42" tv on to view the cameras.

So it's a yellow RCA video cable to the blue VGA. That cable on new egg might work... I'ma see if I can find something like that on ebay cheaper.

**EDIT** I think that cable is meant to display the computer on a tv screen.. not the other way.

Re: What kind of cable would I need?

That cable should be fine. The blue end goes to your computer monitor, and the yellow(coaxial) or black(s-video) end goes to the dvd player. It's one or the other with the black and yellow ends.

Ebay probably has a cheaper one though. I always use newegg for computer stuff, or tigerdirect. Just make sure the seller has a high seller rating and you'll be good.

Re: What kind of cable would I need?

someone posted a review... Sort of whut I want the cable for:

Cons: I took a gamble on this cable. I did not want to go from my computer to TV like most reviewers, but rather hoped to go from a directv or digital converter box to computer monitor. Alas neither worked. I get absolutely no signal on my monitor, a hanns g. Also unfortunately Newegg has classified this item as non refundable.

Sorry, that was the first one I found. The cable you want though will be something like that. There are converter boxes as well, but more pricey.

There's this one if you want RGB output to the dvd player/dvr.

Re: What kind of cable would I need?

No, it's fine. I have a cable something like that and it doesn't work either direction. PC > TV or TV > PC So prob gonna take some testing to get one that works.

thanks for the help.
