USB Flash Drive Problem

I have two computers that I've been needing to transport data to and from. One is at my house, which has all my work related stuff on it, and the second is my older computer that was at my house, but now I've moved to my shop that I recently started, and now I need to get all my work related stuff to that computer. The home computer is a fairly newer model and has Windows XP and the shop computer is a bit older and has Windows 98. The USB flash drive is a SimpleTech and I've already dowloaded and installed the necessary Windows 98 Drivers that is required by the Flash Drive. So, I gathered all my data from the Home Computer and put it on the flash drive. Turned out to be around, 90 megabytes of stuff I believe. So I took it to the shop and tried to open, and the E: drive will open, and it will even bring up the Folder in the E: drive that contains all my data, but when I try to open the folder, or move the folder from the E: drive window on to the desktop, my computer freezes. Any idea what the problem may be? I was thinking maybe it's just too much data at once for the older windows, but I don't really know anything about these Flash drives. Hoping someone that knows a little more about them than I do could help me out.

Re: USB Flash Drive Problem

mmmm.... hard to say, could be a lot of things.

Are the computer next to each other?
If they are it might be easier to create a local area network between them and just share the files. Can you burn it on a cd? or a zip drive?

Make sure you have the most current drivers for the flash drive.

If all else fails get a gmail account and email it to yourself.

sorry thats all I got.

Re: USB Flash Drive Problem

So, you are able to get them off of the XP computer, and then when trying to transfer the Windows 98 computer is the one that freezes?

Try only downloading one file to the Win98 computer and see if that works, it could be that you are trying to do too much and the computer gives up or it could just be an incompatability between the 2.

Re: USB Flash Drive Problem

Yeah the one that freezes is the Windows 98 one at the shop. I couldn't try a network because this computer is 20 minutes away. The Windows 98 has a cd burner, but not the XP computer which the info is on, and since I just recently moved in to the shop, it still lacks internet access at the moment. I guess I'll probably try doing a smaller transfer in MB, thanks for your help so far guys.

Re: USB Flash Drive Problem

the other issue might be the difference in file systems (NTFS to FAT(32))

I forget how to fix this though

Re: USB Flash Drive Problem

well as far as fat32 and NTFS, windows can support multiples. It wouldn't make a jumpdrive NTFS because it knows better.

Did you plug in the jumpdrive before you installed the drivers? In many USB applications in Win98 if the drivers are *not* installed before the device is plugged in it will create a generic USB device, and then it won't let you change the drivers.

Back in the day companies that had this problem used to make a tool to remove the generic device from your win98 system, then you would reinstall drivers before replugging in.

Maybe try removing your USB devices from the 98 system? If not, check the manufacturers site for guidance. SOmeone has probably had this problem before you.
