HP Laptop Troubles

I recently scored an HP Pavillion dv5000 laptop for a low price off a buddy of mine. I got a new battery for it, because the old one didn't hold a charge, and I reformatted it because it ran like ass. The only issue it is having is that occasionally, it will just randomly shut itself off. It was doing this before it was reformatted when it had too many things open at once, but it did happen once last night as well, and all it was doing is downloading some Windows updates. I believe that it is a cooling issue, but the fan works fine. As long as I have a cooling station underneath, it's fine. This is OK at home, but it's extra space and cords when I take this outside of my home. Any ideas?

Re: HP Laptop Troubles

Its most likely a cooling issue. I would open the fan case and use compressed air to blow out dust and other crap. The older the comp the more dust you'll get out which will help keep your laptop running cooler and reduce over-heating issues.

Also make sure you don't have a lot of programs open in the background, this will increase your CPU work load causing more heat.

As for when your out and about, theres not a whole lot you can do. Only do simple things that don't require a lot of CPU power (more CPU power = more heat) and keep the running programs to a minimum.

Re: HP Laptop Troubles

Why wait? Spray some compressed air through the side vent.

Re: HP Laptop Troubles

Yeah, I would hit it with some compressed air in the vents. There should be a screw or two holding the fan/cover, you could slightly open it up enough to get compressed air in there.

Re: HP Laptop Troubles

just take it apart already. . .it doesn't take but a few minutes to do. . .and any bit of overheating could be your last bit of overheating. . .it only takes one good cooking to screw it up permanently. . .my desktop had a problem where it was running a bit warm, but i always had my BIOS set up to shut down the system if it was starting to get too warm. . .well, i walk into my room one day, and it's entirely way to hot in that room, and it wasn't from the outside temp. . .my computer is running and my temp monitoring program said the CPU core temp was over 90 degrees C. . .the computer never got that warm again, but it was only a matter of a week or 2 before it needed to be replaced because of damage to the motherboard and processor. . .

Re: HP Laptop Troubles

ok, i have determined that it must be battery related somehow. it started shutting itself off again. if i remove the battery and just let it run straight off the charger, it works. before doing this, it says my battery has no charge! it is a brand new battery, so idk wtf is going on. anymore ideas? this way works fine, but if i accidentally unplug it, it will die and i will lose whatever i am doing

Re: HP Laptop Troubles

The contacts where the battery are supposed to charge might be dirty or broken. Take the battery out and have a look. If they're dirty, try cleaning them with a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. Since the battery is new those contacts should be fine.
